H oa CAN COUNT ON US SYLLABUS 1986 Marion-Adams High School 509 E. 4th Street Sheridan, IN 46069 Volume 52 Y OU CAN COUNT ON US Dear Cousin, It’s too bad you had to move away from Sheridan because you’re going to miss out on a lot this year. Believe me. “YOG CAN COUNT ON OS” to make this a great year. I like my classes this year. I’m taking government, advanced chem- istry, adv. comp., calculus, and com- puter. Sounds like I’m an ACA- DEMIC whiz, huh? As you well know a STUDENT’S LIFE is much more than going to class. I also work at the Dairy Queen about everynight. I’ve joined two new ORGANIZATIONS this year: SADD and the Drama Club. Hey, can you believe my little brother is in JR HIGH now? Remem- ber when we were in seventh grade and our basketball team had a 9-0 season? Well, the SPORTS program is as strong as ever with many championships. Well, if you ever get bored give me a call. “YOU CAN COUNT ON US” for a great time. Compared to the 1860’s however, many changes have been made. Here is a list of some of the busi- nesses which existed during the 1860’s: General merchandise, This- lethwaite Bros., H.J. Thisleth- waite, Hamilton Emmons; drugs, P.B. Stout, David Foight; clocks. P.G. Pearson; physicians. Dr. H.E. Davenport, Dr. J.W. Fancher, Dr. H. Mooreh; shoemaker, J.Y. Green: milliners, Mrs. W. Clemans, Mrs. M. Emmons: undertakers, Mace Sackman; saddle and harness mak- er, Julius Pearson: wagon-makers, blacksmiths and painters, Wains- cott, Mann Cropper. The present downtown area. Seniors Benny Biddle and Timo Saarto are two of our finest cross country runners. Brenda Brennan keeps the rhythm with the band during the half time performance. Several seniors show their spirit by dressing up on twins day. 6 ENIORS This Is Our Year We’ll never forget the year 1986. Charlene (Sheets) Davis takes a break during lunch time. Todd Clark STUDENT LIFE Jobs And Hangouts As most communities do, Sheri- dan has its own share of hangouts. Probably the most popular one of Sheridan is Rowdy’s on a Friday night after the big game. “I like hanging out there after the game because there’s nowhere else to go and that’s where the gang is,” said Steve Bilby. From Danny Daugh- erty, an employee at Rowdy’s, comes this statement: ‘‘It’s a good place to work and to make a lot of money and eat a lot of pizza.” Or on that same Friday night if you go a little farther east down mainstreet you’ll find another gang on the library corner.” I had to; I was waiting on my pizza,” say’s one-tim- er John Burdette. So whether it’s a hot Saturday on the library corner or a cold Friday night at Rowdy’s, kids will be kids and you’ll find them at their hangouts. 20 1. It was a year where anything and everything was popu- lar. Fads were started at the drop of a hat and obscure individuals rose to fame in a matter of days. Everyth- ing that came and went this year shared one common interest: they were outrageous! Paisley pants, stirrup pants, sweats, dresses, mini-skirts: you name it and it was in. Rock stars like Prince and Madonna dragged in the classy but trashy look: sporting half shirts made of chiffon and lace that revealed their bare midriff to the delight of thousands of fans. Whitney Houston leaped on to the scene with a pure and innocent act that domineered over the sleeze team of Prince and Madonna, but never put them out of work. While on stage, Whitney Houston per- formed with grace and class, and unlike Madonna, managed to resist the urge to spend 2 hours of the concert on her back. Another hometown hero which America embraced was “Rambo,” who was acted out by a convincing Sylvester Stallone (Rocky). The movie “Rambo” managed to gross millions in box office sales alone. While “Rambo” was busy defend- ing the G.S.A., we here in the real world had real problems to deal with. The explosion of the space shuttle “Challenger” sent shock waves of mourning through all of the country and the rest of the world. Seven astronauts were killed, but the tragedy did not kill Ameri- ca's spirit. Life here in America was finally starting to come together. This to- getherness was projected in everyth- ing we did, and in everything we saw on television. “The Cosby Show” and “Family Ties” were two of the most popular shows of the year and both were based on the idea of fam- ily togetherness. All in all, this year brought us a lot of everything, but most of all it brought us memories. Memories of 1985 and memories of 1986 that will stay with us forever. 22 H I T S A N D F A S H I O n s Shades certainly made a hit this year as Tina Hume and Amy Thompson demonstrated during Stunt Might. 1. The beach-bum look was hot this year, as demonstrated by the singing trio of Trina Ew- ing. Wanda Sevier, and John Christian. 2. Mini skirts and cropped pants were in big this year, especially if either was made of denim. 3. Paisley pants were also hot this year, thanks to the rock star Prince, who helped bring paisley back in. 4. To the disbelief of many, blue jean jackets reappeared on the fashion scene. 24 W E C A IS D 0 A N Y T H I IS G This year Marion-Adams was proud to present “We Can Do Any- thing” Stunt Night ’86. We have had Stunt Night since 1970. In 1971, we extended Stunt Night to a two-night presentation because it was such a success in 1970. This year Stunt Night was held on March 28 and 29. In general, students thought this year’s Stunt Night was a success. “I thought Stunt Night was pretty good this year and I thought every- body did a nice job. The highlight of Stunt Night had to be Saturday when the Senior Sensations per- formed to ‘Y.M.C.A.’ and received a standing ovation,’’ said Junior Greg Shields. The Senior Sensations con- sisted of Steve Bruce, Eddie Weak- ley, Nick Christy, Matt Hunt, Darren Christy, and Doug Rogers. ‘Y.M.C.A.’ is a song by The Village People. Although Stunt Night was a suc- cess this year, some students thought there were still areas that needed improving. “I thought Stunt Night was better this year than it had been in the past. There were a lot of good acts, but it needed a little more comedy. My favorite acts were the Senior Sensations’ ‘Y.M.C.A.’ and John Christian’s solo ‘God Bless the G.S.A.,’ said Junior Melin- da Louks. 1. Missy Rayle lip syncing the ‘‘Supper Bowl Shuffle. 2. Doughnuts were the next object on the list, and then the bodies packed themselves on the bus. It is 6 a.m. and the question is asked “Does any sane person get up this early?” The question is quickly answered with . . . yes, the dedicated members of the Marion- Adams Blackhawk Marching Band. The dedication of the band is su- perb. What else could you say about a group that has put in a couple of hundred hours in practicing, prepar- ing, going to band camp, getting yelled at, missing things that they would much rather do than prac- tice? This is what I would call dedi- cation, and the dedication has seemed to pay off with: DIV I at ISCJ DIV I at Lawrence Central DIV II at Martinsville Best Auxiliary Lawrence Central These are just a few accomplish- ments the band has achieved this year. The band has put in long hours and hard work because of the ex- tremely tough competition at their many contests. Sometimes just get- ting there can be hard. Bus rides of two hours or more are common. When asked what he thought about the long bus rides director, Mr. Christian laughs, “I thought they were kinda fun.” He should, the morning bus rides were about the only times the bus was pretty well quiet. Some other talented groups are the Mystical Illusion Guard, Haw- kettes, and Choir. The Mystical Illu- sion made a special trip to Chicago and performed at many contests, making a move up to open class with the “FREAK SHOW”. The Hawkettes chose not to go to contests but put work into basket- ball games and stunt night. The Singing Sensations worked hard. Christmas time was the bu- siest time. They performed on the circle, for nursing homes, and sever- al school functions. With the performances by the Mystical Illusion, Hawkettes, Sing- ing Sensations, and Band the musi- cal talents of Marion-Adams’ stu- dents were evident. They began the year out with the perfor- mance of two one act plays: “The Final Dress Rehearsal” and “The Necklace.” The drama team sur- prised audiences with their comical renditions of the plays. Danny Daugherty stated, “It was exciting but nerve-racking.” Miss Thomas had these words: “At one point, I wondered whether or not we would have an opening night, because there were several people missing from practices because of jobs and illnesses. In a small school, it’s diffi- cult to find students who have time to devote just to one activity, there- fore, you just have to accept the fact that you can’t put on a major pro- duction. There is a lot of talent in this school, so I’m glad the students have had the experience of being on the stage. Hopefully, the drama club and drama class will give students an awareness of the art of drama.” ft Vi ' y 1. Laura Wisehart and John Christian during a scene of “The Necklace. 2. Since the paper is pub- lished every two weeks, fast pace journalism skills are put to use. With the help of two co-editors, Rob- ert Merchant and Matt Youmans, the newspaper staff performed many tasks. They interviewed, wrote articles, typed the print into the computer and worked hard checking and rechecking the paper before publication. Another mass media publication is the yearbook. The ever crying words of the Yearbook Staff were, Are we done yet??? We never knew what would hap- pen next: a darkroom phantom left its mark, our chaos was recorded unknowingly on a video tape, staff members attempted to give Miss Thomas a nervous breakdown, and notes mysteriously appeared on people's backs. Some common expressions devel- oped: I don't know if it’ll be wurf it to ya. What’s it to ya? Oh my stars! That tickles me. Buh! Is it time to party yet? 36 1. The parade ran smoothly, but it started to rain at the pep session the night before the game so we didn’t get to finish all the activities. Remember the next day? Several of us walked around the halls cheering during the beginning of 5th period hoping we could continue the pep session from the night before. Senior Mindy Guttman had these words to say about homecoming: “I wish it hadn’t rained.” Even though we lost the game and rain called off several of the activities, very few Blackhawk spirits were dampened. 1. When starting the 1985 season, the Sheridan Black- hawks were ranked 2. The North Judson Blue Jays, who we beat just a year ago also in the class A State Championship of 1980, was ranked 1. As the season progressed, it was a typical SHERIDAN team because we were now 5-0 and everything was going all right. We entered the 6th game with a lot of confidence. We were going against Clinton Prairie who hadn’t beaten Sheridan in 19 years, but on this night history changed because Sheridan got beat. This seemed to be the downfall of Sheridan because we dropped our next 2 games including Homecom- ing. Now it was playoffs and Sheridan got back on the rack winning the next 3 in a row and we captured the Sectional Championship. We lost again in an overtime for the Regional Championship. Even though we were very disappointed about this, I think the season was a success and a lot of personal goals were reached. 6. The teams’ ability didn’t show on their season records. Though the varsity only won one game against the Deaf School, they were very competitive in most of their games. The junior varsity’s most com- petitive game was against Hamilton Southeastern. “At that game they suddenly realized they could play volleyball,” said Coach Thompson. Coach Thompson was asked if she thought the teams would win more games next year. Non-hesitantly she answered, “Yes definitely! Whether they do or not depends their mental attitudes.” Junior, Aimee Thompson, a Var- sity player, said “Even though our record didn’t show it. I feel we im- proved a lot since last year, and I look forward to next season.” Soph- omore, Missi Rayle said, “We were very competitive; we all had lots of fun playing together and, I look for- ward to next year.” 4. They finished with a very promising overall record of 23-23, and in dual meets the Hawks were 4-4. That was quite an accomplishment for a team that beat only one opponent a year ago. Coach Brian Sears seemed to think the reason for the turn around was because last year’s team only had 3 or 4 guys doing 2 workouts a day, but this year the whole team worked out consistently. The young Hawks look to be strong again next year even though Timo Saarto and the 1 runner Benny Biddle will graduate. Return- ing is 2 runner Chris Adams, who felt this year’s success was due to the fact that, “We ran like a team, not a group of individuals.” Also re- turning will be 3 runner Robert Merchant. 4 runner Brad Stone, 5 runner Lance Steele, 6 runner Jason Godby, and 7 runner Bill Zollman. 6. Coach Sears said, “I’m real pleased but I’ll expect more from them next year. Other girls who could really help are: April Emery, Kristin Bishop, and Lillie Woodcock. One was to finish the season with a winning record and the other was to win the Carmel Sectional. With new coach Doug Huse making some changes in the team they went into the season with high hopes for reaching those goals. Led by seniors Steve Bruce, Nick Christy, Doug Rodgers, Matt Hunt, Barry Stone and Benny Biddle they were able to end the season with a 13 and 10 record. Unfortunately, the last loss of the season came in the final of the Sectional. Even though they failed to meet that last goal it was a very good season for the team, and especially for Steve Bruce who signed to play for Campbell University in North Carolina. Hopefully the Hawks will continue this kind of success for years to come. 1. Back row: Coach Huse. Steve Bilby, Tim Harris, Brad Stone. Scott Roberts. Reserve Basketball 62 With a team made up of mostly non-starters throughout their junior high years, many people were say- ing it would be a good year for the Reserve team, if they won more than once. Since they ended the sea- son with five wins you would have to consider it a successful season. Many of their losses were by slim margins and improvement by indivi- duals should help next year’s Varsi- ty team. This was the first year for many of the team members to play a lot of basketball in game situations. The experience will be needed for next year. 1. 1st Row: Woody Woodrum. Derek Eige, Matt Youmans. After wondering if they would even have enough people to have a team, the Freshman basketball team and Coach David Glunt proved that quality not quantity wins games. With only seven people on the team they were able to far sur- pass what people had expected from them. After a successful regular season they went into the County Tourney hoping to be able to win their first round game, but ended up being runner up in the tournament. This brought to end a good year for the Freshman team and they hope to continue this success in the years to come. 3 4 1. The girls take a bow during Stunt Might. 2. It proved to be a productive season with vast technique and very skilled players. Two spotlighted players were Beth Kercheval and Aimee Thompson, both receiving outstanding athlete awards. The girls started what is believed as an uphill trend. With the talented 5 girls that will remain on next years team, they are sure to have a more successful and goal-catching year. Two of the goal-catching fighters were Reserve Coach John Christy and Varsity Coach Annette Thomp- son, who along with the girls have put time and effort into a successful and proud year for MAHS Girls Bas- ketball 1. They also recorded 1 tie. The pitching staff was the best that Sheridan has ever had, break- ing the E.R.A. record of above 2.5 with an E.R.A. of less than 2.2. The hitting was also excellent to help preserve a winning season. After the last game Coach May said “This year’s team has helped turn the Sheridan Baseball program around.” 1. But it didn’t stop there. During the sum- mer, many of the girls attended cheerleading camp to improve their performance the following year. This year’s cheerleaders made an excellent attempt to entertain the school. Many hardships made it very difficult. Angie had the first of the hardships with fracturing her arm; then came Dena’s ankle injury; and third was Francis breaking her ankle. Overall, they came through with dedication. 83 YOU CAN court ... to get the job done Angie Smith works on an experiment during Jonn. chemistry. ing tl T ON as MM. Some of us liked to study at home, but the rest of us liked to get the work done here so we wouldn’t have homework. Study hall was often boring for a lot of us so we looked forward to going to the Media Center. The Me- dia Center is a place for everyone to learn, imagine, dream, and find out. It’s no longer just a library. It’s a major source of information to sup- Scott McKinney crams for a test. plement and enrich all class instruc- tion with the use of books, periodi- cals, vertical files, etc. Mrs. Cotton has worked hard in the Media Center for six years to keep not only the flow of books go- ing, but also the lending of audio visual equipment. English isn’t the most exciting class to take in school, right? So, you wonder, why is so much of it required? Ask your- self this questioni: If there was not an English language (or any other language for that matter), how would people communicate? Lan- guage is the main form of communi- cation between people. Mrs. Quist's class celebrates with a fiesta. Of all the languages, English is the most complex to learn. English involves the study of writing, gram- mar, speech, literature, etc. As said by Miss Annette Thompson, “Eng- lish can be a hodge-podge lan- guage.” Miss Thompson’s class takes part in the Students read and discuss in literature class, play: A Raisin In The Sun. 86 Jeff Durham won the Rotary Speech Contest: Frank Purciful placed 2nd and Dena Whaley placed 3rd. Freshmen relax before English class starts. Business And Computers For many years at Marion-Adams high school, the business classes have prepared hundreds of students for their future occupations. It’s the study of people. Mr. Potts thinks his students enjoy this class because it’s about things that are happening to them. They’ve done experiments — on hypnosis, meditation and problem solving. Social Studies 10: When I asked Mr. Blotch if he thought kids liked his class he said “I don’t think the students enjoy the papers.” Social studies deals with human relation- ships and the institutions of human society. Sociology: Mr. Veger’s class has been watching films on race dis- crimination. The films explain why people are prejudice. Government: The government class did a term paper. They could do it on anything about government that they had talked about. Mr. Potts said he thinks the kids don’t mind doing the paper because they don’t work any harder on the paper than they do a regular assignment. 1. In home-economics classes we learned such skills as sewing, time management, organi- zational skills, and consumer skills. Mrs. Newcom said that the most im- portant thing that students learn in foods class is how to improve eating habits. “They learn what foods pro- vide the best nutrients for healthy bodies.” Timo Saarto and Eddie Weakley are making cookies in Home Ec class. In the shop classes, Mr. Veger and Mr. Cook provided projects which helped us develop such skills as problem solving. “Creative think- ing is what I stress the most,” said Mr. Veger. “This helps the students solve different types of problems.” With Mr. Cook’s expertise, we learned how to design and draw a house to scale in architect class; how to draw sectional views in tech- nical drawing; and in wood working class we made magazine racks and Christmas ornaments. Stu- dents did activities such as rebuild- ing a Mustang. 100 101 Art And Music Marion-Adams offers both Begin- ning and Advanced Art. In Beginning Art, sketching with pencil and chalk were the first steps. The next step was to learn how to shade. Some other projects included ink, water colors, oil pastels, and sculpturing. Advanced Art included basically the same projects but students were ex- pected to perform on a higher level. Some of the projects which were done this year were: eagle, alligator, car, bear head, guitar, mask. Mrs. Dollens and Mr. Christian worked hard to provide several dif- ferent music opportunities for stu- dents. Mrs. Dollens directs the Sing- ing Sensations.
