The Hawks recorded 7 wins to go along with 3 losses. The 3 loses were the most losses for a Hawk team in one season in 7 years. The Hawks did have their moments though as many school records fell. Sheridan’s passing game was the best it’s been in years. Behind the arm of Dave Leonard the Hawks passed for more than 1,000 yards. Most of those receptions were caught by the hands of Bruce Evans, Jeff Hedge, Curt Ayers, Monte Molden, John Prater, and Kevin Wright. The offensive line at times showed flashes of brilliance. Led by Seniors Neal Cody, John Snethen, Paul Miller, Mike Haw ley, and Randy Parsons along with juniors Jeff Hiatt and Tim Beck; the linemen improved every week. As is the case with most good teams the key to the Hawks success was their defense. The leading tacklers were Bruce Evans and Kevin Garst, most opposing coaches will remember these two as being in their backfield, more than their own quarterback. The “muscle” on most teams is generally considered to be in the defensive line and our team was no exception with Cody, Parsons, Hedge, Miller, and Molden. The defensive backfield once again came up with the big plays, Leonard, Wright, Gordie Acord, and Curt Ayers led the charge. Frosh Go Undefeated, Reserves Lose One Row 1: B. Mossburg S. VanMeter S. The Jr. Varsity Hawks had a lot of super performances this year turned in by guys like Les Neibold, Derry Zachery and Rondall Godby and a h««t of others. This years Reserve will be next years Varsity so look for the Hawks to be strong in “83 This year the Freshman Football team demolished 8 opponents by a combined total of 354 to 27. In 3 years of football the freshmen lost only once. The Hawks were coached by the combined efforts of Coaches Carr and Costlow. The boys were very 24 impressive throughout the year with their spirit and hard work and should have a very promising 3 years ahead of them .. - -• i A A | i i r Tigers Spoil Homecoming, Senior Girls Win Powder Puff! When you look back on it though, the game was never close as the Hawks led from the start to finish and finally ended up winning by 18 points. It was almost fitting that the Hawks win it this year after coming so close the year before. In order to get to the final game the Hawks opened up the sectional by beating Hamilton Heights. Then they knocked off Hamilton South- eastern, for the right to play Carmel who had just upset tourney favorite Noblesville. The sectional was highlighted by the hot shooting of forward Ed- die Kinkead, the rebounding and shot blocking of center Bill Whaley, the free throw shooting of guards Collier and Wright and by the superb perfor- mance turned in by surprising sophomore forward Doug Barnes. All five were eventually named to the All-Sectional team. The following week the Hawks traveled to Ander- son’s Wigwam to face Kokomo Sectional Champ Western. The Hawks were once again underdogs but when Whaley hit 2 free throws with only : 11 seconds remaining to put the Hawks up by 2 it looked like the Hawks would earn the right to face the host, Anderson Indians, in the night game, but it wasn’t to be. Western hit a long jump shot at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. The Hawks controlled the ball for almost 2 minutes waiting for one last shot that would win the game. The Hawks called timeout with : 13 seconds to go, however Western stole the inbounds pass, took the ball down the court, and scored the winning basket. Going to the regional is something the players never will forget. Not many people get the opportunity to play in front of 9,000 screaming fans and although they didn’t win they can be proud because they gave it all they had. For seniors Bill Whaley, Eddie Kinkead, John Waitt, Kevin Wright, and Jeff Hedge winning both the Westfield Holiday Tourney and the Sectional and getting to play in the regional climaxed a lot of hard work and dedication, for underclassman such as Rodney Collier and Doug Barnes it could be only the beginning of things to cOme. For coaches Blotch, Galbert, and Costlow it meant that all their time and effort had been well worth It. Congratulations, HAWKS, YOU DESERVE IT!!!! Hawks Win Sectional! This year’s freshman basketball team finished the season with a record of 3 wins and 10 losses. The young Hawks had to overcome the loss of both Doug Rodgers and Tad Long to the Reserve squad. Although it was tough at first, the Hawks finally put it all together towards the end of the year to finish up strong. The boys are all anxiously awaiting next year, and with all summer to practice, look for the names Bruce, Christy, Bilby, Hunt, Biddle, Stone, Baker, Rodgers and Long to be popping up quite frequently in the next 3 years. Starting the year off at Vincennes University Cheerleading Camp, they received all blue Superior ribbons. Along with all blues, the Varsity and Jr. Varsity received the Spirit Stick three out of four nights, bringing home with them a Spirit Stick. Once school started, the cheerleaders began their ususal tasks like: baking cookies, sign making, designing hoops, planning pepsessions. The senior threesome, Lisa. Claudia, and Delores, will leave their long, hard years of yelling as very memorable, exciting years. Cheri and Anita are looking forward to their final year of cheerleading as seniors. We wish to thank Mrs. Virginia Reed, our advisor, who put in long hours helping us complete this book. The staff and I would also like to thank our yearbook representa- tive from Jostens, Mr. Dick Maurer and Mr. Bill Cripe, our professional photographer. A special thanks goes to the businesses that bought ads for the Syllabus. If it weren’t for the businesses, this book could not be possi- ble. I would like to give a special thanks to the staff members. I hope they had as much fun as I did making this book. It was a real pleasure working with all of you. Eddie Kinkead Editor
