1976 SYLLABUS MARION-ADAMS HIGH SCHOOL RURAL ROUTE 2 SHERIDAN, INDIANA 46069 VOLUME 42 To most people the year 1976 will represent the cele- brating of our Bicentennial. We all are looking back to see how the colonists made history two hundred years ago. And just as they made history in 1776, we the students of Marion-Adams High School are making history in our 1975-76 school year. For us Seniors, the exper- ience of making history at Marion-Adams High School will enable us to continue to make history in our community, state and nation. From our undefeated football teams, memorable homecomings, classroom exper- iences, extracurricular activi- ties, that unforgettable prom, to our long awaited graduation, we indeed had a memorable year MAKING HISTORY AT M-A H.S. Ben Johnson once said, If a man does not make new acquaintances as he passes through life he will soon find himself left alone. A man should keep his friendship in constant re- pair. MAKING HISTORY at M-A.H.S. in- cluded the renewing or beginning of many last- ing friendships. Sometimes there were tears, but it is the joyful times with our friends that we remember most. MAKING HISTORY ALL TOGETHER Mr. Stout The 1975-76 Syllabus staff dedicates our Bicentennial yearbook to the memory of Mr. Byron E. Stout, who served our com- munity faithfully as a student of Sheridan High School and for forty- two years as a teacher, coach and principal of this school. 6 School Board: Left to Right - Mr. Heffelmire; Mr. Wallace; Mr. Pence; Mr. Evoy; Mrs. Nicholsen; President, Mr. Walker. TURNS TASSELS CLASS FLOWER Carnation CLASS SONG: 24 Hours at a Time CLASS MOTTO: Cherish yes- terday, live for today, and reach for tomorrow. Jeff Maxwell, Valedictorian. Guest speaker, Rev. Jim Powell. Oops, forgot something! Ken Biddle, honored Alumnus. The class of 1976 made Baccalaure- ate and Commencement ceremonies short and sweet this year by combining them in- to one. The exercises began with Jodie McCarty giving the Invocation. Jeff Max- well gave the Valedictory address followed by Toni Barrick's Salutatory speech. Day by Day was then sung by Senior choir members. Rev. James Powell gave a talk telling the Seniors to Celebrate the Sun . He said to try to succeed but also to enjoy life now. The presentation of diplomas and awards by Mr. Pence and Mr. Kouns then took place. The Benediction given by Rev. Robert Rinkenbeng and the Reces- sional closed the ceremonies. Amazing Grace, bus B's tour guide. The sights put Leslie and Toni asleep. Since when has Dale become a twin??? The Senior trip proved to be an ex- citing and memorable time. We visited many momuments and Gov't, buildings, spending one afternoon at the Smithsonian Institute. It being the Bicentennial year, there were some new attractions and some under construction. The times we will all remember will be the goofing off and free time we spent with our friends: swimming at midnight in a closed pool; running from one end of our trip picture to the other, imitating Iwo Jima, playing cards on the bus, Lynn Roeder's laugh, taking pictures and posing for them, ack ack ack ack, twelve dollar taxi fare, and just having a nice time in other people's rooms. 22 SENIORS REWARDED WITH AWARDS I Dare You award winners, Kim and Katrina. 1976 Citizens of the Year . PHOTOGRAPHY AND INDUSTRIAL ARTS Photography is an exciting way of exploring the scenery around you. Students are able to capture a moment or a beautiful view. It offers further knowledge of hand- ling a camera and how to adjust it so the scene is captured just so. The true feeling of the picture is in how the students set the camera. But most important is the personal satisfaction of developing their pictures and watching their crea- tion come into form. Looking good! No pornographic pictures. Jay! My final Creation . KOUNS A special thanks indeed does go to Mr. Beryl Kouns, our principal, who due to the untimely death of Mr. Byron Stout early in the year, took over the responsibilities of the princi- pal of Marion-Adams High School this year. We realize that this, along with the vice-principal's job is a heavy work load. We the 1976 Syllabus Staff and the student body wish to honor him for taking the leadership reins and doing such a great job of guiding us through this school year so smoothly. 143 There were times we thought we wouldn't. But we finally got it done, It took a lot of effort. But we had a lot of fun. Hope you enjoy the 1976 Syllabus. Now that you have approached the end of the 1976 Syllabus, I would like to thank you for purchasing the book. I also hope you are pleased with its contents. In putting this annual together, we have tried to capture and tell about the ways the students of Marion-Adams High School were Making History during the Bicen- tennial year. Just as we look back at America's history and see how the colonists set up the foundation of our country to make it the great nation it is today, I want you to be able to look back at this Syllabus '76 and cherish the mem- ories of the good time's we had. This book would not be possible, of course, without the work, help and dedi- cation of many. I would first like to thank the Syllabus Staff. They worked hard and met many deadlines. I'd like to thank Ayres, the official Syllabus photographers, and Mr. Hal Higgins for many of the photographs used in this book. Mr. Richard Maurer, our representative from Josten's American Yearbook Company is another person who should be thanked for being the voice between the production Lynn Roeder, editor crew and us staff members. Thanks also need to go to the faculty and administration for their patience, understanding, and co-operation throughout the year. I would like to express my gratitude to Mrs. Virginia Reed, our advisor, for contributing her extra time and help so that we could compile this book, and just for putting up with us all year. Last but not least, I would like to thank the many patrons who purchased ad- vertising in the annual. Without this financial support, we would not have money; and without money, the 1976 Syllabus would not be possible. Lynn Roeder Editor
