As principal, advisor, and friend, he has helped us solve our problems and make decisions which have been so important to us. His advice will be remembered as we assume our roles as citizens of tomorrow. Everyone is well acquainted with Mr. Mace, our trustee. He is often seen around school, for he is interested in us, our activities, and our education. We sincerely appreciate his enthusiasm and interest. During the last few years our library has expanded greatly. This year alone we have added 300 new books. We now have separate libraries for the Grades, Junior High, and High School. Of our student librarians, five of them are members of the Hoosier Student Librarian Association. In October these five and Mrs. Hammer attended the H. S. L. A. conference at Terre Haute. We are proud to have our school represented on the Executive Committee of the Library Section of the State Teachers Association. At that time they practiced for the state fair parade in which they received a rating of eighth. They played at all of the home basketball and football games where many interesting and entertaining half-time shows were performed. As an organization the band has grown considerably. They now have more than fifty members. Page Forty-Two ORCHESTRA The orchestra is composed of one senior, ten other high school students and five Ir. High students. They sang at the Thanksgiving service, the Christmas program, at a ball game at Christmas time, various Convocations, and the Spring Music Festival, in which they combined with the choruses from other county schools. They also sang at the Senior Baccalaureate. Page Forty-Four DRUM MAJORS The three majorettes this year are doing a fine job. They attended classes in twirling at Smith Walbridge camp and at Butler University. Under the instruction of Mrs. Van Sickle and her daughter, Ley Anne, they have done several routines at both football and basketball games. This year we have two drum majors; Billy Moore, a senior, and Bob Seymour, a junior. Bob has attended Smith Walbridge drum majors camp for three years; Billy has attended for one year. They put the finishing touch on the marching band. Both boys hope to be college drum majors someday. Coach Hobbs directed the boys through many tight spots and led them on to victory in many games this year. The team took the county tourney this season and brought back a very fine trophy to add to our trophy cases. The scheduled games ended with our defeating Attica by a margin of 69-48, and the season ended in the sectional by our loss to a great bunch of boys and a fine team from Jefferson Township. A banquet was held in honor of the basketball players by the fans of the team. A fine program and good food was enjoyed by all and the boys had all the pie and cake they could hold, mmm-m. They went not like the defeated souls at night, Sentenced to the showers, but sustained and soothed By an unfaltering trust, approached that game Like one who wraps the knowledge of his coach About him and plays to win this game. Top: Loran McKinley, Sieve Rice, Mike Kercheval, David Elmore. Bottom: Neal Godby, Bill Dodd, Ronny Pickett, Neal Cody. LORAN McKINLEY Senior - Loran is a three year varsity center. He has been the power under the basket and the height of the team. Loran is known for his ferocious hook shot. STEVE RICE - Senior - Steve is a starting guard on the team. He has had plenty of drive and aggressiveness and has been the fireball in many of the games. MIKE KERCHEVAL Senior -Mike has been the boy that puts 'er in when a point is needed. He has been our threat with his treacherous set shot. DAVID ELMORE - Junior This is Dave's first year on the team and what a year. Dave's strength around the basket has been tremendous. He has been a very valuable asset to the team and to the school. NEAL GODBY - Junior - Neal, a guard, has been a real pepperbox, both on offense and defense. He gave his opponents a rough row to hoe when they came his way. BILL DODD Junior - Bill, a forward, has had a great year. He has been very consistent with his set shots. He too has been a very aggressive ball hawk and one we could depend on in a tight squeeze. RONNY PICKETT Junior - Ronny has looked very promising this year. He is probably the best shot from far out, on the team. NEAL CODY - Sophomore - Neal is the only varsity sophomore on the team. Neal has given us a very fine performance this year and we are looking for even a greater one next year. Page Fifty-Nine Firs! SEPTEMBER 4 Dear Suzie, I'm sorry I haven't wrillen sooner, bul you know how the first few days of school are. My latest beau is Bob, who is a real cute guy. One of the first doings around school was the Carmel vs. Sheridan football game which we won 27 to 6. It looks like we are going to have a good team this year. The next game was with Frankfort which we lost 13 to 0, but we are still proud of the boys. The Office Practice class has decided to print a school newspaper again this year, which will be called The Blackhawk Broadcast. On September 8, I went to the first Future Homemakers of America meeting, while Bob went to a Future Farmers of America meeting. Our next ballgame was played again:! Jackson Central which we won 34 to 0. Convocation was held on the 19th in the gym with Reverend Taylor of the Sheridan Methodist Church. Bob and I went to Indianapolis to get our senior pictures taken. Sunshine Society initiation was held in the Methodist Church at night, instead of during the day as it had been previously. Sheridan lost to Crawfordsville 7 to 20, but we won over Kirklin 21 to 6. I guess I had better close now and do the dishes. P. S. Write Soon Jane Giggle OCTOBER Dear Suzie, I have some spare time; so, I will answer the letter I received from you yesterday. Bob tried out for the senior play, and got a part in it. On the 7th the first issue of the The Blackhawk Broadcast came out. Sheridan won the football game that was played against Westield, and the score was 26 to 0. We won the next game also, which we played against Mississinewa. The score of the game was 26 to 0. Bob and I met in the gym for Convocation. The seniors had a class meeting where each senior received ten plav tickets to sell. Ethel Kinsey, Elizabeth Childers, and Marta Taylor were nominated for the good citizenship title. Their names were given to the faculty, who chose Elizabeth Childers to represent our school On the 10th the dairy judging team representing Indiana, placed third in the International Dairy Show 4-H judging contest at Chicago. This year for the first time, they selected a Chapter Sweetheart from the senior class, who was Elizabeth Childers. The band attended Band Day at Indiana University on October 15th. Each Tuesday night some of the G A A. girls have been going bowling at Cicero. On the 21st the speech class gave a play imitating the $64,000 Guestion quiz program. The score of the Sheridan-Noblesville game was 14 to 7 with Sheridan winning. We had a nice vacation over the 27th and 28th which was Teachers' Institute. At the community Halloween parade Betty Law, a junior, was crowned F. H. A queen. I have a date with Bob in ten minutes, so, bye for now. Jane NOVEMBER Dear Suzie, I'm sorry I haven't written sooner, but I've been pretty busy. During the first week of the month, we had a Sunshine meeting in the assembly. We sold season tickets this week. I sold forty dollars worth; so, I got a free ticket. On the 4th we had a nice time at the F. H A. meeting where we sang several songs, and answered roll call by telling our favorite food. The American Legion gave a Veterans' Day program on the 11th. At 10:59 the Kraft factory whistle blew, the fire siren sounded, and the church bells rang. We won our first two basketball games of the season over St. Mary's (Anderson) 71 to 37, and we won over Noblesville 61 to 45. Convocation was held on the 21st with Reverend Williams from the Sheridan Wesleyan Methodist church. We lost to Crispus Atlucks with the final score being 36 to 55. The school celebrated Thanksgiving by having turkey in the cafeteria on the 23rd. After dinner the speech class gave two plays, and the chorus sang two songs. We received a two-day vacation from school which was happily accepted. Sheridan won their game over Elwood 55 to 46. P. S. So long for now, don't Love, forget to write. Jane DECEMBER Dear Suzie, Here I am again with my monthly letter. The 1st day of December was S. D. (safe driving) Day; so, the students were reminded of it by papers which were passed out just before school was dismissed for the day. We lost to Winamac 75 to 69, but won over Adams, South Bend 50 to 38. The state scholarship exam was taken on the 9lh day of December, by several of the seniors. Our team did it again. They won over Rossville 55 to 33. The speech class gave a program on the 12th. I went to the Sunshine meeting, concerning the bake sale which was held the next Saturday. Sheridan won over Tipton 67 to 40. The seniors had a class meeting to decide on the color of their caps and growns. Convocation was held on the 19th with the speaker being Reverend Jesse Griffith from the Sheridan Church of God. Sheridan won their game over Jackson Central 48 to 42. On the 22nd the speech class gave two plays and a monalogue for the Christmas season. The chorus went caroling through the halls, then school was dismissed for the long awaited holidays. Jane Giggle JANUARY Dear Suzie, Are you keepinq all of your New Year's Resolutions? Mine were simple when I made them, but now they are getting harder to keep. Our first ball game of '56 was with Greencastle. and v e slar'ed the year off right by winning. Bob and I had a lot of fun on the train to Hammond Noll, even though we lost the game 52 to 38. Everybody around here is getting all excited about the coming county tourney, sectional, and regional. Of course, we don't know if we will get as far as the regional this year, but we all hope so. The boys got off to a good start by winning the county tourney. On the 16th, convocation was held, with Reverend Wyatt, of the Boxley Methodist Church speaking. Bob went to an F. F. A. meeting while I went to an F. H. A. meeting. On the 18th. Ethel Kinsey, Judy Hinshaw, and Deanna Edison competed in the American Legion Oratorical Contest. Deanna won. At the end of the first semester twenty-five reniors graduated. This was the largest number of students ever to graduate at the end of the first semester from Sheridan Hinh School. Our next game was with Tipton, which I am sorry to say, we lost 64 to 52. The next night Sheridan was up against Lapel, and we won 64 to 39. We played at Lebanon on the 27th and lost 61 to 64. See you soon, Jane FEBRUARY Dear Suzie, This month started with a loss to Flora, and a win over Delphi. On the 9th. I went to the Honor Society meeting. We are getting ready for the initation of new members on March 2. Our next B. B. opponent was West Lafayette and we lost. Bob and I had a lot of fun when we sat together, and watched the speech class give some good skits. Our last scheduled game was with Attica, which we won. On the 20th. we had another convocation, the speaker being Reverend Herbert Engle of the Sheridan Friends Church. The mixed chorus sang two numbers. We were very disappointed when we lost our second game of the sectional against Jefferson Township. The games were played in Noblsville's new gym. On the 29th. we had another Honor Society meeting to practice for the initiation. Write soon Jane Giggle MARCH Dear Suzie, We seniors are counting the days until May 4, when we leave for Washington, New York, Niagara Falls, and Canada. On the 2nd. I took part in the National Honor Society initation. Six seniors and ten juniors became members. The next week we had our first meeting with both the old and the new members present. Bob and I went to the basketball banquet on the 9th. Everyone except the seniors, has been filling out his pre-enrollment sheet for next year. They are having trouble deciding what subjects to take. I have a date with Bob in twenty minutes so I had better close and start to get ready. Love, Jane APRIL Dear Suzie, The day is slowly drawing near, and school will soon be out. The seniors are busy planning for their trip and graduating exercises. I can hardly wait. On the 20th. the Spring Music Festival was held in the gym. We got out of most of our classes for practice. We received our invitations and name cards, and we are busy addressing and mailing them. After months of hard work, the Annual was finally sent to press. We were all pleased with the job we had done, but we were qlad to have it finished so we could turn our attention to other activities. I'd better close now and study for a Government test. See you soon, Jane MAY Dear Suzie, The last few davs of school have finally arrived. We have all waited for these days; but now, we seniors are not sure we want to leave. We left on our long awaited trip on the 4ih. It surely was a lot of fun, but we were all glad to get home. On Sunday afternoon of the 13th. we had our Baccalaureate Service, and Commencement was held on Monday night. When the time to leave was really here, we all felt sad about leaving. I am sure that we have gained a great deal from our friendships in high school; and we will never forget the good times we have had. Page Sixty-Two A life-long friend, Jane Giggle 1. Nancy McMurlry, editor of the New York Times, and I left on an interplanetary tour to check on our old classmates. We left in our private space ship, piloted by Edith Bailey and Wanda Stout, to view the remains of the class of '56. Landing in London, we were met at the spaceport by Bill Dunham who is now the Prime Minister of England. He took us to dine at the world-famous KA-SA Restaurant, owned and operated by Sandra Anderson. While dining, we were entertained by The Lost Chordeltes , whom we found to be Pat Spear, Patty Gray, Ethel Kinsey, and Bonnie Hutchens. Hailing a taxi to the spaceport, we were amazed to find ]ack Mace as our cab driver. As we were about to board our space ship, we heard the cry of cokes in a never-to-be-forgotten voice. Yes, it was our own Jack Henry. In Paris we stopped, and who should we see but Trudy Fisher and Connie Sims sitting under the Eiffel Tower painting portraits. They told us that Mike Kercheval had opened his own farm implement store, and that James Harbaugh, Kenneth Perry, Dicsk Purdy, and William Pawlak were his chief salesmen and mechanics. Then, going on into India, who should we find in the main square of Calcutta, but Marie Stafford and Mary Ogle charming snakes. Gloria Harris was just around the corner telling fortunes and selling love potients. Our next stop was China. Here we found Connie Johnson June Sample, Janice Haughey, Barbara Singleton, Cleora Calvert, and Dorothy Jones working at the Slung-Hi Soda Shop . After a pleasant chat, we decided to take a tour of the surrounding countryside. We rented rickshaws and, much to our surprise, Rusell Durbin and Ronnie Fulwider were our rickshaw boy'. As we rode along, we saw Donnie Marlow irrigating the paddies on Keith and Dale's Thompson Rice Plantation. Dale Ogle and Billie Stone were busy polishing the rice. Heading north, we slopped in Siberia and found Carroll Reddick and Phil Pearson running the salt mines. From there we headed east to Alaska. Looking over the country we saw Ronny Godby on his dog sled, delivering the mail. Also, we learned that Steve McVey, John McCarty, and David Landis now had a monopoly on the fish trade in Alaska. Our rpace ship took us next to Saskatchewan, Canada, where we discovered Becky McClure as the head of the Royal Mounted Police. Her assisting officers are Virginia Gotham, Diane Hancock, Reitha Shoe, and Marcia Wright. While there, we stayed in the Stowers-Waters Sports Lodge. Phil and Jim told us that Janet Spencer and Elizabeth Childers taught skiing to the guests. As lime was growing short, we headed next for Mars, where we discovered Jackie King teaching the Martians to prepare American dishes, and Bill Jessup as President of the Martian's National Bank. Taking a short tour, we found Kenny Bitner trying to get away from it all. He told us that Richard Law, Don Long, Jane Musselwhite, and Jim Adair had escaped and were making Swiss cheese on the moon. Our next stop was Saturn. We found Rosemary Merrill daily counting Saturn's rings, and Phyllis Staley, Phil Duche-min, and Vernon Shupe working on a plan to improve farm prices. Also, Phil Cole was amassing a fortune manufacturing Davy Crockett suits. Bidding farewell to these classmates, we headed once again for Earth. Stopping for a moment in Argentina, we learned that Kenny Parr was running for President. From Argentina, we next visited Panama where we discoverd Don McCullough and Billie Goff widening the Canal. They told us we couldn't possibly leave without seeing Marta Taylor and Loran McKinley. Marta and Loran have had many cutting experiences while running the world-famous Taylor-McKinley Clinic of Surgery. Going on into Mexico, we stopped briefly in Acapulco to find Jerry Hiatt fighting bulls and Von Pitts refereeing rooster fights. From there we flew to Palomar Observatory in California Here we found Billy Moore polishing the lenses on the telescopes. Farther north in San Francisco, Jannis Ottinger was trying desparately to sell the Golden Gate Bridge. Heading homeward to New York, we looked up the remaining classmates. We found Frankie Davis and Raymond Padgett running the Statten Island ferry, and Gloria Strawn directing traffic in Holland Tunnel. To end our search, we attended the $64,000 Question program. Backstage, we found Ann Ogle telling the new Spacerama lipstick. There could be only one person as her assistant, Steve Rice! The new master of ceremonies was Nolan Millikan, and Judy Dell and Jayne Mc-Murtry were editing the questions used on the program. All in all, we had a very enlightening trip, and we hope you enjoyed this letter informing you as to the whereabouts of your former students. Sincerely, Suzanne Griffith Head of English Department Columbia University Page Sixty-Four Page Sixty-Five He's seen in the halls At each noon and each ballgame. He’s directed our class To the SHS Hall of Fame . He's worked and he's slaved To get us to D.C., New York and Niagara, And places we must see. We have a co-sponsor Who's helped us so much. She kept track of the popcorn Thai would fill sixteen trucks. Wiihout these sponsors We couldn't have done it. If they give a medal These two've surely won it. MOMENTS TO REMEMBER As I sat rocking by my window last Tuesday watching the great-grandchildren playing, my mind wandered back to our school days. Do you remember Christmastime in the grades? The excitement over the programs in the gym? Why, once, the S.P.C's got to dance on the stage. And then, there was the movie as part of our party. Bambi was always a sad show, every time we saw it. Through the years we had parties in the gym and on the football field. We traveled to Turkey Run, Pickett's Poultry, Kingans', and John Herron Art Institute. As juniors, the work began with the selling of popcorn and cokes for the ultimate goal, excluding graduation, our senior trip. We, as seniors, kept up the steady increase in our class treasury by winning the season ticket sales for the sixth consecutive year, selling vanilla extract, and sponsoring a train to Hammond. These were just some of our achievements as the different class.” The class of '56 put out the largest annual in S. H. S. history. We were the first to take a nine day senior trip. Now as I look back through dampened eyes at our graduation, I see our classmates, so young and inexperienced, eager to get out into the world and make names for themselves.
