SHERIDAN BROTHERS AND SISTERS How would you like to have seen your little brother or sister in the hall everytime you went to class? In 1986 many students at Sheridan High School put up with the grueling situation every day of the week. People who didn't have to deal with this may not understand the torture these people went through. Everything that happened to you at school always got home to your parents. No matter how hard you tried to act mature, stories like how you still slept with a teddy bear always seemed to get around. Just when you were acting cool in front of your friends, your brother or sister would come over and cramp your style by asking what time your mother was picking you up from school. Although brothers and sisters are the causes of many headaches, you couldn't imagine life at home without them. Sister and brother Anna and Doug Purkey. It's not as easy as it sounds. Substitute teachers find themselves in situa- tions similar to this nearly every day. Spitballs whizzing by their heads are common occurrences. They must train themselves to ig- nore pranks and wisecracks made by the more lively students in the class. So the next time you have a substitute teacher, think twice and show some respect, because someday you may be in their shoes. Following the flight of a wounded fly was just one of the many ways a student could pass the time in that most favorite of classes, studyhall. “I've never known a forty-four minute period to last such a long time, sighed sophomore Dave Conrad. Some students devised in- genious time passing ac- tivities. Perfecting spit ball projectiles has become a favorite of many freshmen. The juniors have developed the great talent of sleeping through the boring minutes of the time they spend here. Although studyhall can be one of the most boring classes, it's a vital part of our education. Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz . . . A few individuals created their own styles, wearing anything from sunglasses to whole, wild ensembles every day, but most, although they wanted to be dif- ferent, chose to be unique in the same way as the rest of the crowd. After all, imitation is the main thought on every fashion- conscious mind. n Mike Sagan Plain jeans weren't good enough anymore in 1986 — you had to have striped, paisley, flowered, or gasoline jeans, but you could still get by with Levi's button-fly 501 jeans. As the temperature increased, people started wearing jams, which were knee-length shorts with wild flower prints all over them. Although they were popular with the students, the administra- tion didn't appreciate the new fashions in the classroom, as they were against the school dress code. If Mr. King saw you or if so- meone told him you were wearing shorts, you got called up to the of- fice and were asked to change into something else, either at school or at home. Even though you felt cheated because everyone was allowed to wear them but you, there was some justice because the next time you saw a person with shorts on, you could go and tattle to Mr. King. You could count on the cooks to let you know what day it was by the food they served. Every Wednesday was the infamous Pizza Day, and for about 7 weeks in the spring, there was fish every Fri- day. After looking over your options, you could still buy a hot lunch or buy something from a la carte. Challenges for a lot of people were whether or not they could ditch into the lunch line, or sneak Little Debbies out of the cafeteria without Mr. King cat- ching them. After lunch, you could go outside or to the gym, where you could cram for a test or copy homework from a close friend. Usually after the bell rang things went back to normal, but no one will ever forget the time Carl Reichley and Rod Gutridge ran through the hall with panty hose on their heads. Working in the cafeteria is easy for Ken Knight and Shawn Smith. Sophomores 21 Readying herself to go home after an exhausting home volleyball game is Shelley England. The class of 1987 has many academic accomplishments of which to be proud. They have three people in their class main- taining four point grade averages. Lisa Malherbe, Lisa Ridenour, and Tina Sterner have all worked hard to attain this honor. The class elected Kim Evans as their homecoming at- tendant this year, and Dee Davisson, Angie Ingold, Rona Roffey, and Kurt Wright as their class officers. Every fall, juniors are faced with the responsibility of selling enough magazines to finance their prom and creating a theme better than the previous year's. This year's theme, Ocean Odyssey went over very well and nearly all of the juniors ended up helping in one way or another. For the first time in Sheridan history, the after-prom was held at the YM- CA. Leisure activities included racquetball, basketball, swimm- ing, ping-pong, and a choice of four movies. As the school year came to an end, this class had proven that they would be an asset to the 1986-87 school year. Along with all the ex- citement came a few hassles. To start with, you gained all of those good friends who sudden- ly had no other way to school but you. Your car became a taxi service for everyone in your neighborhood. It was not unusual for someone to call you between six and seven in the morning to see if you'd please pick them up. Being the kind person you were, you never turned anyone down. Although your car would only hold six comfortably, it was nothing out of the ordinary for at least ten people to be riding with you. In order to pick everyone up and be at school on time you had to leave your house at 6:30 A.M. just so you wouldn't be tardy. The You-Haulers of today will be remembered in the years after graduation as the guy who almost killed me on the way to school. Ocean Odyssey was the theme for the 1986 prom. Evy Ham- mond catered the meal which consisted of turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, broccoli with cheese, green beans, tossed salad, iced tea, coffee, rolls and butter, and gelatin parfait for dessert. )unior class members presented Mrs. Kay Ballantine with a dozen white roses to show their appreciation for her work on the last 24 proms, and to wish her well in her retirement. Row 2: Damon Wren, Lynn Vansickle, Beth Jolin, and Chris Roberts. The Sheridan High School Odyssey of the Mind team, consisting of Lisa Malherbe, Lisa Ridenour, Ty Ramsey, Damon Wren, Lynn Vansickle, Beth Jolin, and Chris Roberts, has accomplished something that no other team from Sheridan or the state of Ohio has ever done before, they have gone to the World Competition in Flagstaff, Arizona and have returned with the third place trophy. The road to Flagstaff has been one of hard work and aedication for the team and adviser Larry K. Col- eman. The team competed in the division GREAT ART LIVES. The group sculptured a replication of Fredrick Remington's first piece Bronco Buster. Another part of the teams presentation was their dramatic interpretation of another Remington work, his first oil painting, A Misdeal, which they also replicated. The play dealt with the social pressures and crises that teenagers face today. The purpose of the Odyssey of the Mind Competition is to challenge students to think creatively and solve pro- blems on their own. The team was only one of nearly 1000 to compete, and their third place finish is certainly a tremendous honor. They shared smiles; they shared tears; but they've grown all along, and they mean even more to each other than they'll ever know. They'll remember each other for a long, long time. It won't matter where they live or where they go, These are the times they shared, times they laughed, times they cared. And they mean even more to each other than they'll ever know. So they sing farewell, though they're sad to have to go. They mean even more to each other than they'll ever know. And so ends 1986, The Year of the General! (Paraphrased from Farewell Song by Jan Reese) 1986 SENTINEL STAFF Editor................................Samantha Johnson Design Editor.........................Marabeth Smith Advertising Editor...............................Alicia Cornell Adviser............................Mr. Martin Imbroscio In this 26th year of Sheridan’s existence, the 1986 Sentinel Staff, con- sisting of three people, has made history. It was, to date, the smallest staff the school has ever had working to complete a yearbook. (Completion date — June 19, 1986). We hope that you enjoy the finished product. 12
