Several exciting pep rallies were held during the year to boost the team’s spirit and create more spectator interest in the games The football team’s rough and ready” strategies prevail against the quick and powerful Morgan Raiders during the homecoming football game. During the homecoming pep rally an effigy of a Morgan Raider was burned symboli- cally. The sophomores won the spirit stick at the homecoming pep rally. Working on homecoming dance decorations are Leslie Hill and Erin Hupp. Opening 5 Before the game the cheerleaders arrived on the field in a truck. For Homecoming 79, the Generals Get On “The Victory Train” Homecoming 1979 was celebrated on Octo- ber 6th. The theme of the yearly event was “GET ON THE VICTORY TRAIN.” Student Council president Joel Loughman presented the queen and court. Reigning as Queen of the festivities was Renee LeRoy. She was crowned by Joel Loughman and presented flowers by Vince Smith. Senior Attendant was Brigitte Kullman; Junior Attendant was Deb Hudak; Sophomore Attendant was Joyce Thorne; and Freshman Attendant was Joni Ramey. The Generals fought a long hard battle beating the Morgan Raiders 8 to 6. After the game the homecoming dance was held in the gymna- sium for students and alumni. Fall Play 17 Exchange programs expose students to new cultures Again this year Sheridan High School hosted foreign exchange students from both Mexico and Japan. Martha Tap- pan was from Mexico City, Mexico. She enjoys tennis and gym- nastics. She stayed with the Mr. and Mrs. Maynard Winegard- ner family and the Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Eagle family. The other exchange student, Yukie Harada, was from Toyko, Japan. She enjoys piano, music, and poetry. She stayed with the Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Rouse family. Yukie was a senior and partici- pated in the Sheridan High School Graduation exercises. Cheering in an SHS pep cheer at the Dare to be Different pep rally are the foreign exchange students, Martha Tappan and Yukie Harada. Walking along a Tokyo street is Yukie Har- ada. SHS students Melanie Lynn and Karen Wilson were recognized for participating in the foreign exchange program along with Yukie Harada, exchange student from Japan. 1 8 Foreign Exchange STATE FIRST PLACE AMERICAN HISTORY TEAM: BACK: Mr. Harry Hoover, adviser. FRONT: Mike Kelly, Lisa McGlone, and David Gotschall. Awards Night ’79 This year Awards Night was held on May 27th. Pins were given to the students on the honor roll 4 or 5 times. Chris Haley was presented the Century III award. Joel Loughman received the DAR award. Leadership award, and was also named the Artist of the Year. Jackie Clouse received the newly created Lucille Love award presented by Mr. Ed Taylor and Miss Lucille Love. Jackie Clouse also received the Ohio Academic Scholarship. First year scholarship members were presented varsity letters and 2nd year members were given certificates. Vocational awards were given in the areas of Home Ec., BOE, and Vo. Ag. Again this year the last part of the eve- ning proved to be the most exciting with many scholarship teams doing very well, but.the climax came when it was announced that the American History Team placed first in the state again this year. Receiving an award for 5th in the district and honorable mention in state scholar- ship competitions in French II is Tim DeLamatre. This year for the first time the Lucille Love Award was given. Presenting the award to Jackie Clouse is Miss Lucille Love. Presenting the Leadership award to Student Council President Joel Loughman is principal Mr. Richard Fisher. Later, after Annie’s motorcycle stunt, Frank quit the show because Annie was becoming more popu lar. Shocked by Annie’s behavior is Frank’s new lady friend Miss Sylvia Potter Porter. Musical 21 Paris in the Spring This year the junior-senior prom was held on Saturday May 12. The theme of the prom was “Paris in the Spring. The sidewalls of the gym were decorated with scenes of Paris including Notre Dame, Eiffel Tower, and Sidewalk cafes. There was a garden on the stage and a caf6 at the other end of the gym. Prom couples entered the gym through the Arc-De-Triomphe. The dinner began with a trip to a salad bar. Afterwards ham, scalloped potatoes, green beans, and iced tea were served with a sundae for dessert. After dinner the class history could not be found, but the class prophecy was given by Brigitte Kullman. Afterwards dance music was provided by Crosswinds. Later in the eve- ning the prom couples were shown a movie, “The Promise” in Newark and a breakfast of French pastries was served at the school. Teachers as well as students enjoy the prom scenery. Many prom couples enjoyed dancing fast and slow dances to the sounds of Cross- winds. Crosswinds, the band for the prom, featured a female lead vocalist in most of their songs. Sitting in the gazebo where the prom pictures were taken are some of the prom goers. Prom 23 Graduation is only a moment, but its effects span a lifetime Under the direction of Mrs. Mechling, the graduates sang the class song, Old Irish Bless- ing. On Sunday, May 27 the combined baccalaureate and gradua- tion exercises were held in the high school gymnasium. The sen- ior class was dressed in the traditional caps and gowns in red. The invocation and baccalaureate addresses were given by Reverend Don Bachman of Grace Lutheran Church in Thornville. Co-Valed- ictorians Joel Drew Loughman and Jacqueline Louise Clouse jointly addressed the audience. The class song, Old Irish Bless- ing”, was sung by the graduates under the direction of Mrs. Mechling. After the presentation of the Valedictorian awards by Superintendent Bert Severance the Alma Mater was sung. Diplo- mas were presented by school board members Dave McGaughey, Thomas Hill, and Robert Forsythe. Vocational diplomas were pre- sented by Jerry Blackstone. A group of chorus members then sang the Benediction which was followed by the band's playing of the recessional. Before the graduation exercises. Co-Valedictorians Jacqueline Louise Clouse and Joel Drew Lough man jointly addressed the graduates, parents, relatives, and friends. Art Club aids other groups at Sheridan High The Art Club continued its excel- lent service to the school this year. One of their biggest projects was their “Yankee Know How Home- coming float. They also made the backdrops and props for the min- strel and spring musical. To show school interest and spirit in sports, they designed posters for the gym. Band entertains football fans The band was busy this year as usual. Besides playing in vari- ous concerts and contests, band members made the trip to Cedar Point for their second year. The band marched in the Memorial Day parades in Somerset, Thorn- ville, and Glenford. At the annual Christmas Concert held by the chorus, the band plays a number selected by their instructor, Mr. Nick Cal- derone. Sentinel Staff reflects on ’79 This year’s Sentinel staff chose “Reflections” for the theme of the 1979 yearbook. Many students, especially seniors, will reflect on the past year whenever they pick up the yearbook. Besides working hard to finish the project, the staff also had some fun. Leisure time was spent at the Tussing swimming pool. A Christ- mas dinner was also held at the Tussing home for the ’78 and ’79 staffs. Coach Remmert retires after fifteen seasons Wrestling season for 1978-79 was again hampered by the snow and ice; several meets were can- celled or postponed. This year’s dual meet record was 1-2-1. Grap- plers participated in tournaments at SHS, Granville, and the MVL at Maysville. MVL Champions were Frank Forsythe and Walt Mick. Reserve wrestlers took part in three tournaments, winning the Utica one. At the banquet, Eric Wilkins was named MVP, and Mr. Rem- mert’s retirement as head wrestling coach after 15 years was recog- nized. Mr. Remmert’s dedication to his wrestlers and to the sport itself will be missed. Wrestler Eric Wilkins and Mr. Nolan Hender- son are congratulated by Mr. Richard Wil- kins. Such units as Child Developing, Food and Nutrition, Clothing and related areas were studied. Students also received instruction in food preservation, food purchasing and preparation, kitchen planning and equipment, clothing and textiles, money man- agement and career selection. Latin students were taught the society and customs of ancient Rome. French students learned French carols and went Christmas caroling. Russian culture was introduced through songs and dance. Math principles are put to use Math courses were offered on several levels this year. General Math reviewed the fundamental principles of arithmetic. Geometry taught an extension of developed ideas of area and volume. Algebra I and II included the study of linear equations and inequalities. College Math I and II prepared students for future schooling. Ten students from the physics and College Math II classes of Mr. Swern and Mr.Stilwell attended a seminar held at Ohio State University and heard different lectures in several areas. Moth 81 Chorus is active The year was an active one for the members of the cho- rus. Chorale was held as a class for the first time. Twenty-four students partici- pated in OMEA Competition in March. The annual popcorn sale was held. The Chorale sang at several area churches.
