TWENTY YEARS LATER If you looked in the 1958 Rampages, you would see five familiar faces which also appear on the faculty pages in the 1978 annual. They are: Mr. Martin, Mr. Wollenweber, Mr. Facchinello, Mr. Parker, and Mr. Webb. The Rampages would like to dedicate the 1978 yearbook to these people. For twenty years these teachers have been an integral part of Sheridan High School. The years have wrought changes in the people as they have in the school, but they have remained firm and faithful, loyal to Sheri- dan High. Jim Martin started at Sheridan when the school opened in 1952. He taught P.E. and was the football coach. He wandered away for a few years, to Ranum High School and the Colorado Division of Youth Ser- vices but came back as principal in 1971. Art Wollenweber also taught P.E. and coached, only his sport was baseball. He came to Sheridan High in 1956 and has been here ever since, being assistant principal for 7 years. Bob Webb is director of vocational education for the school district. When he first came to Sheridan in 1957 he coached and taught drafting. Pete Facchinello teaches social studies classes and coaches wrestling. He came to Sheridan in 1955. They came from different places and backgrounds, these people. But they all elected to spend their edu- cational careers at S.H.S. One name has been left till last. Mr. Parker is retir- ing this year, and the Rampages staff wants to give him a special dedication in the yearbook as a farewell. Mr. Parker has been at Sheridan since the beginning. He came in September of 1952. Before that he taught science and math at Fort Lupton and was principal at Joes, Colorado. Mr. Parker grew up in North Carolina, where he received his B.S. at Western Carolina Teachers' College. His Master of Education is from C.U. Mr. Parker has been teaching biology at Sheridan High School for twenty-five years - a quarter of a century. It is hard to imagine the science department or the school without him. Goodbye and good luck, Al- vin Parker! 77-78 IS .. 1977-78 will be remembered as the year that was. It was the year the football team took the league cham- pionship and competed in the state playoffs. Soccer had its best season ever. The drama productions came off with tremendous success, and girls' sports surged, involving a record number of participants. The band often marched home victorious from competition, and gymnastics brought an added vitality to the school. Q Q' E Special clubs such as FBLA, Spirit Club, and FHA gave students a chance to express their unique talents. Out of twelve wrestlers at district, six qualified for State. Boys' swimming enjoyed an eventful season, while the girls used the year to build their team. Basketball had a grow- ing season. .ly 1 5 , 'ff .mf I f 2 'W-.. l THE YEAR IN PICTURES The Area Vocational School and new courses expanded the students' scope of opportunities, while assemblies pro vided learning experiences through entertainment. The 15-minute Sustained Silent Reading program involved all students daily in a novel educational experience. It was the year the Rams learned to accept defeat along with the bliss of victory. It was a year some of us strug- ' through, while others thoroughly enjoyed themselves. There is one factor, however, that all of us have in com l. We all share memories of '77-'78 in the pictures on the following pages. Read on and remember. HOIVIECOIVIING Joni Harrod 9 MR. With Roaring Fork's Tracy Cerise hanging on, Gifford Dudley was unable to gain much on this play. Such was the case most of the day as Sheridan was defeated by Roaring Fork 24-6 and eliminated in this season's state playoffs. Other players shown: 464 J. Toney, 417 P. Soria, 350 K. Reifschneider. SEASON RECAP: After an impressive 33-6 win over AAA Mapleton, Sheridan traveled to Brush for its second game of the year and was handed a 7-6 defeat by the Beetdiggers, who were eventual state champion runners-up. Then the Rams proceeded to reel off nine straight victories, enabling them to win their 7th Metro League championship and advance to the state playoffs. Included in this string was a 53-15 Homecoming win over Clear Creek. In the state playoffs, Sheridan opened the preliminary round with a fashionable 49-6 win over outclassed Manitou Springs. Then, in one of Sheridan's finest and most thrilling games ever, the Rams topped 41 ranked and undefeat- ed Yuma by a score of 22-21 in overtime. This game took its toll, however, as many of the top players were injured and unable to heal up totally for the next encounter. As a result, Sheridan went down to defeat, 24-6, by Roaring Fork, which went on to conquer Brush the next week for the state champion ship. While the Rams didn't win the big prize, they played impressively and provided thrills and excitement for those who followed and backed them. There were many players who contributed to this year's success. In the line Bryan Amen, Jerry Toney, Kurt Reifschneider, Randy Weems, Dave Bunnell, Gary Sedgwick, Shawn Lord, and Jay Ed- wards were most prominent. In the backfield, labeled as lightning in a bottle, speedy Gifford Dudley, Kurt Wol- lenweber, Ed Dudley, and Pat Soria led the way. There were many other contributors, as well, including those who led the JV team to an undefeated season. The varsity finished the season with a 10-2 record, having lost only to the state champion and runnerup. A fine season, indeed. Photo by Bill Peters The Denver Post FOGTBALL 77 U RT Q it -T Qi?
