Alone, to discover the joy of just being you. 6 To discover the joy of others. Alone, to think. But before you begin your uncertain journey. . . 8 Look back to the familiar. . . Remember. . . And think. . . 0 R Q a n 1 z a t i o n s n Student Council’s number grew to 40 this year, as changes created by the new constitution came into effect. Led by Student Body President Jim Carbone, they collaborated with the Student Senate to sponsor several projects. Assisting Jim were Vice-President Peter Clark, Secretary-Treasurer Elizabeth Cantonwine, and Student Activities Co-Ordinator of Chris Martin. Seniors were Erika Thickman, John Juroszek, Marcia Hale, Kelley Pelissier, John Kurth. John Nalivka, and (not pictured) Kathy Skatula. Mike Redburn, and Tom Ta-kach. 12 Juniors included Ed Hammer, Mary Lan-nan, Karen Weber. Roxanne French and (not pictured) Larry Fisher. Susan Gra-din. and Jon Johnson. Sophomores included Diane Zingg. Diane Crimmel. Don Verley. Kevin Ryan, Karla Friedrichs, Patti Davis, Rhonda Rawlings, John Rhodes, and Peter Kinney (not pictured). Steve Hoyer, David Kin-skey, Andrea Shassetz. and Jon Strahan. 13 Student Senate Acts The 1971-72 Student Senate met under the leadership of President Peter Clark. The first semester officers helping the president were: Vice-President Bill Fall, Secretary-Treasurer Patti Car-roll, Parliamentarian Bennie Harris, and Publicity Committee Chairman Debbie Sare. During second semester they included Vice-President Richard Ur-batchka, Secretary-Treasurer Patti Carroll, Parliamentarian Michelle Catterall, and Publicity Chairman Teena Rawlings. The Senate’s agenda varied from trying to find a home for a bear to lively discussions about teacher evaluations and dress codes. Senate also cooperated with Council on several projects. Sometimes the Senate’s ideas were wild and impractical, or few and far between. The Senate, however, acts many times as a student “blow-off” valve, allowing students the chance to say what they didn’t like about school or what they would like to see new and better. At times, Senate’s objectives became vague, but never obscure. Even with small accomplishments, Senate still played an educational role byteachingstudents how to w o r k and act through the democratic process. Above: Senate President Peter Clark leads a meeting of the Student Senate. 14 National Honor Society This year marks the 25th anniversary of Singing Valentines, sponsored by the National Honor Society. Way back in 1947, the idea popped up that a good way to raise money for NHS was to have students pay National Honor Society to sing valentines to their sweethearts. The idea stuck, and it looks like it’s going to stay. 16 Opposite Page, center: “Just an old fashioned love song. Opposite Page, bottom: Our illustrious leader, Mrs. Myrla Bisbee -- busy as always. Harold, played by Bill Scott, decides to sell the townspeople on the idea of a Boy’s Band and at the same time win the affections of the town librarian, Marion Paroo (played by Kathy Ska-tula). Combine with this an eager-to-see-her-daughter-married-off Irish mother, played by Marcis Hale; an easily flattered mayor’s wife, played by Doris Moeller; a constantly bickering school-board-quartet comprised of Kenn Litt-ler, Jim Moeller, Jim Roush, and Dan Burgess; and the confused mayor played by Dave Oakes; not to mention the evil villian traveling salesman, as played by Jim Raymond; and you’ve got Meredith Wilson’s THE MUSIC MAN. The musical in two acts was directed by Taylor MacKinnon with special assistence from Michelle Friedrichs and Cindy Rawlings. The play opened November 10, and played to packed houses the three nights of its run. The musical was one of the largest ever at SHS, utilizing nearly 150 students from the music and drama departments. The townspeople of River City discover they’ve got trouble, as explained by Harold Hill (Bill Scott) above. In a field, I walked alone, by a sheltered pond near a hillside. The sky above, appeared below, and all things were mirrored as they were. With a single rock, I changed the scheme of things; one carelessly misplaced object distorted the whole. 229 230 Photography Juroszek A conscience is a mirrored image, and few people enjoy the company of their own. It stands upon a pedestal of truth (never absolute or clearly defined) and leers at one. I begged my conscience to come to my own level, that I might deal with it as an equal, as it was. It came, and it was destroyed. Both were the losers; both are the same. Destroying my conscience, I destroyed myself. The hand of God stretched above me and changed the shape of the world, and changes it still. I awoke from my dream, all fates uncertain, dying in the ever-dying sun.
