Concert Choir presented two major concerts for the community. Early in the year the choir preformed in the Fall Vocal Concert and on December 15 it performed in the Christmas Concert, singing the traditional “Hallelujah Chorus” and several other Christmas selections. In his first year as choir director, Mr. Taylor Mackinnon prompted the voices of 54 talented students to produce the outstanding music that has become customary for the S.H.S. Concert Choir. Besides being a performing group, Concert Choir was also an organization that elected officers and sponsored money-making projects. Laurie Washut served as president and was assisted by Howard Donnelly as vice-president, Trish Byrtus, secretary, Tricia Rhodes, treasurer, Roger Kreger, historian, and Melody McCormack and Gary Shroyer as social chairmen. Nine members of Concert Choir were members of the All-State Choir and seven members were selected to preform in the All-Northwest Choir. Above and right: The S.H.S. SHS Band Receives Superior Rating at the Northeast District Music Festival held at Sheridan on April 23rd and 24th. Soloists, ensembles, and full bands performed in the two-day long competition. All Sheridan ensembles received superior ratings and soloists received superior and excellent ratings. The Sheridan High School Marching Band began the 1970-71 year by performing in halftime activities during the football season. It was highlighted by the marching maneuvers executed for the presentation of the homecoming queen and her attendants. The band brought out the school spirit by playing at the pep assemblies and basketball games. Six members of the band attended All-State in Worland. They were Jon Avery, Mark Avery, Mike Choman, Howard Donnelly, Meg Thickman, and Sandra Underwood. The annual spring concert of the Sheridan High School Concert Band was held on March 23rd at Central auditorium. Jon Avery was the only band member to attend the All-Northwest Concert in Boise, Idaho. BOTTOM RIGHT: The concentration of the trumpet section. During the 1970-71 school year Stage Band attended the annual Stage Band Festival held in Casper where it received a 2 -frating and it received a superior rating at the Spring Music Festival held in Sheridan. In May, Stage Band played at a benefit dance to raise money for the Experiment in International Living Scholarship. The Syn- dicate, famous for its pranks, was composed of Howard Donnelly, Rich Dunkley, Wes Gradin, Dale Lee, Leo Oneyear, and Gregg Scott, with occasional assistance from several associate members. This year, in addition to making an unsuccessful phone call to Herb Al-pert, the Syndicate played at a Y.M.C.A. dinner, provided halftime entertainment for basketball games, and participated in the school talent show. A Weekend Retreat Kindled the creative sparks of leadership in SHS student council members early in the school year. Patterned after Trail Lake Leadership Camp to which SHS sends six delegates each summer, the retreat was a workshop in leadership skills and a forum to discuss plans for the coming school year. The student body officers for the 70-71 year were Gil Thomas, president; Mike Strahan, vice-president; and Kathy Wright, secretary. Kathy was W.A.S.C. secretary as well and wrote a state newsletter in addition to performing her regular duties. Representation on student council. which had varied among classes in the past, increased to eight representatives plus the class president for each class. In this way, more students were given the opportunity to gain valuable leadership experience. The three student body officers, five student council members, and five members of the senate attended the W.A.S.C. convention held in Cheyenne in late November. Under the guidance of council and senate advisors Mr. Larry Hull and Mr. Mike Darnell, SHS's delegation proved to be representing one of the most capable student governments in the state. Student Senate Members Continued to bring their new ideas to life during the second year of its existence. Primarily a communications bridge between the council and the student body, senate also showed enthusiastic initiative through the completion of several projects. As student body vice president, Mike Strahan automatically was president of the senate. Aiding Mike during the first semester were vice president Rick Green and secretary Joyanna Geisler. Roger Newman was elected vice president and Joyanna was re-elected secretary during the second term. Together, under the heading of student government, the senate and the council accomplished several goals. Most noticable, perhaps, was the change in the dress code that allowed girls to wear pants. In the fall, student government co-ordinated the homecoming activities and constructed the beautiful royalty float designed by Terry Yentzer. Blue and Gold trash cans appeared in the parking lot as the result of another project. At Christmas, a team of students, headed by Roger Newman as Santa, visited the town’s grade schools with a cartoon package and a bag of canes. To raise money for Sheridan’s needy children, several students dressed in present, tree, and reindeer costumes and paraded in front of a half-time audience. Other student government projects included a teacher appreciation day, a winter carnival, writing a new constitution, painting the gym lobby, and many others. In the spring, members chose delegates to Trail Lake and organized student body and class officer elections. We call it the Senior Hall of Fame. A list of 30 seniors, all of whom are outstanding, was given to the faculty with instructions to rate them on points such as contributions to the school, character, personality, achievement on organizations and activities and overall attitude. These people were not chosen for their grade point average alone. Maybe we should include the whole class of 1971, for each has contributed in one way or another, but space doesn’t permit that, so for this year Bronc Staff will honor ten.
