At this time, first year members were sold as slaves for a money raising project. The duties performed by these slaves were varied and quite often unique. This year's officers include Emily Mancini, President; Linda Higgs, Vice-President; and Debbie Fox, Secretary-Treasurer. The club is sponsored by Miss Olive Lee. President Emily Mancini picks day for the banquet. Members attentively listen to up-coming plans. Miss Lee, Emily Mancini, Bill Ebzery, and other members enjoying annual banquet. Pep Club Flourishes Heading the Pep Club this year was Mary Carroll and assisting her was Vice-President Marla Walker. Gloria Kelsey served as secretary and Julie Troxler held the office of treasurer. Members of the Pep Club attended the District AA Basketball tournament held in Cody, February 29-March 2. The girls were accompanied by Miss Horne, Miss Piz, and Mrs. Vannoy. New additions to the Pep Club, the Pom-Pom Girls and Drill Team, added spirit at the games and pep assemblies. This year approximately 125 girls turned out to support the Sheridan High School athletes. UPPER LEFT: A bake sale is held to raise money for club activities. The girls had many projects to raise money which made it possible to go on three road trips this year. Trips to a football game at Natrona County High School, basketball game at Cody, and the District Basketball Tournament highlighted the year. Pep Club was in charge of many of the Homecoming Activities this year--hamburger fry, mum sales, decorating the goal posts, and the homecoming dance. The Pom-Pom Girls included: Kathy Osmond, head; Karen Ballek, co-head; Sandy Janich, Georgia Mock, Ruth Morris, Carol Mulholland, Julie Troxler, and Tanna Tucker. 17 Art Club Silk-Screens Cards Art Club was active inside and outside the art room this year. Its members traveled on three worth-while journeys including two sketching trips to the mountains and one art trip to Billings. Montana. The mountain trips contributed to the better understanding of nature as uninterrupted beauty, while the latter helped the students learn the methods of the more advanced artist. The club also put much work into its projects for obtaining money, particularly in the making of Christmas cards and pin-up pictures. The officers, President Toby Birr, Vice-President Jack Livingston, Treasurer Cindy Plott, and Secretary Elizabeth Ludecke, brought the club together as regularly as possible to decide on the events of the year. Mr. Michelena and Mr. Termes, sponsors, are quite proud of the achievement Art Club has accomplished in benefiting both itself and its school. Ceramic sculpture by Connie Robinson. Latin Club Donates Gift to School The highlight of the Latin Club year was the initiation banquet held at Lee’s Cafe on November 15. The first year Latin students were sold as slaves to the second year members in the traditional slave-market style. This will probably be Latin Club’s last year at SHS. Its sponsor, Mrs. Marie Gardner, is retiring. She has been the club's sponsor and advisor since 1961. Through the leadership of the officers, President Ron Poll, Vice-President Karen Bodine, Secretary Kathy Muller, and Treasurer Cheryl South, Latin Club has decided to donate a water fountain on first floor to Sheridan High School. Curt Laird-Parliamentarian, Dennis Nelson-Reporter, Mr. Hartwig, Thermond Briggs-President, Dick Mefford-Treasurer, Mark Groshart-Vice President F. F. A. Participates in Farm Future Farmers of America has been an active organization at Sheridan High since 1929 when it received the second charter in the state of Wyoming. Its members are engaged in every phase of farming and ranching. They raise beef, horses, lamb, wool, barley, oats, wheat, and many other products. The Club had an income of over $500 last year excluding concessions. Future Farmers have a basketball program and speech meet every year. This year they won both basketball tournaments in Buffalo. Mike Bates and Dennis Nelson entered the district speech meet where Nelson garnered third place. Among other activities were a Parent Banquet held in April and the state convention. Mr. Hartwig, who has been sponsor since 1945, will be retiring this year. It is his hard work that has made the club a success for many years. An active club depends on an interested sponsor like Mr. Hartwig to be successful. 34 Curt Laird welds a spur. 6 President Thermond Briggs leads FFA meeting. and Ranch Institute Future Farmers taking part in open ritual. 35 Jerry Horsley displays handi-work. N. F. L. Sweeps Douglas National Forensics League is the club organization of the Sheridan High Speech Team. Membership is based on points earned in competition. The major activity of NFL is conducting the affairs of the speech team. For over ten week-ends the speech team carried its banner all over the state and into Colorado and Montana, winning a raft of trophies on the way. The high point of the year was the Converse County Invitational at Douglas where Sheridan won the Sweep-stakes trophy--an award for best over all performance. Although they did very well during the season, state was a disappointment to the team. They failed to place in any of the events, but Keli Shovlain, Melany Moore, and the debate team of Peterson and Sowada were awarded superior ratings. With only two Seniors leaving the team this year, Mr. Crimmel, coach, and Mrs. Raecke, assistant coach, predict an even better record next year. Singing valentines always provide a bag full of red faces and giggling friends. This year over $100 was made on this venture. The money was used for a banquet held at the Copper Kettle. The banquet was organized by Sylvia Armstrong. Another portion of the money went for the traditional picture in the entry hall. LEFT: The banquet drew over 40 members. Homecoming activities were the first responsibility of the club. Alice Case was candidate for Homecoming Queen from 'S' Club. Escorted by members of 'S' Club, all Homecoming Queen candidates were presented to the student body. Basketball season brought the job of selling concessions to the club. Tickets were sold for the Donkey Basketball game, sponsored by Jaycees, and Wyoming Freshman Basketball game. 'S' Club donated $80 to the track activities fund for trophies and medals. The members decided to purchase letter jackets when an athlete has received two letters. Possibly the most important activity of this year's club was the decision to revise the constitution. Letters were written to other AA schools to get their approval. To finish the year the club held the annual picnic for upcoming junior high eighth grade athletes. The Broncs then faced their hard luck team, Riverton, and were eliminated 62 to 55. Wes Newton and Lyman Flint were named to the Northern A A A11-Tournament Team. A distressing announcement was made known at the end of the season in that Coach Vannoy had resigned his position at S. H. S. In three years at the high school, Coach Vannoy has piloted the Broncs to 37 wins against 28 losses. Last year his squad advanced to the finals of the State AA Tournament but lost to Cheyenne Central in the championship game. This past season the Broncs won 13 games while losing 8. They won the Northern AA Conference Championship but failed to qualify for the state tournament. Coach . ai.i ( . led the Broncs to the Northern AA Conference Chain;- nship. The squad consisted mostly of Freshmen and Sophomores, with one returning letterman from last year. Coach Koeneman believes that the team will not suffer from lack of experience next year. This year a girl's swim team was started for the first time. However, there were no girl's meets because of a limited number on the team. Swim team was hindered by having to practice at the YMCA where the only pool was available. Most of the boys on the squad worked hard practicing at 6:30 a. m. two days a week and afternoons for two hours three days a week. Several boys also worked out regular in the evenings. The squad has the potential for being next year's champs. The student's support, which was lacking this year, is a needed essential for the team's success. Coach Koeneman gives Mike Francis some good pointers on swimming. Girls swim team includes: Vicki Harper, Debbie Slater, Georgia Mock, Evelyn Ilsley, Kerry Brayton, Vicki Oatts, Debbie Fox. 70 Newcastle Sheridan Laramie Prep Newcastle Laramie Prep Newcastle Thermopolis Newcastle Powell Sheridan Sheridan Sheridan Sheridan Sheridan Sheridan Sheridan Sheridan Sheridan Sheridan Swim Team Has 8-3 Record LEFT: Mike Francis dives into the pool. The organization which recognizes excellence in the field of music is the Music Honorary. It is a group of highly qualified musicians who are selected by previous members. The qualifications include membership in the Junior class, and in at least two music groups such as band, orchestra or small vocal groups. The money making projects this year consisted of a coat hanger drive, selling votes in an Ugly Man contest and a bake sale. The hard-earned money is beneficially used to send a deserving Junior member to a summer music camp. The members made a tour to Denver, Colorado and visited Cheyenne and surrounding high schools on the way. The tour was climaxed by a performance in the chapel of the Air Force Academy during a church service. The choir had been invited to sing on the basis of a tape sent to the Academy. Everyone worked very hard to earn the money to finance the trip, conducting a pop bottle drive, a happening, and a radio program during which pledges were called in by listeners. Over $900 was made in this way. The happening included a light show, dance, and a piano bash. Many fine public performances were given by the Concert Choir for various clubs and organizations on preparation for the trip and for the enjoyment of the club members. Friday's activities began with the Coronation Assembly where Judy Jorgenson, Homecoming Queen, and her atten-dents Mary Carroll and Alice Case were announced to an exuberant student body. The senior skit was chosen by the Queen as the most original and best presented at the assembly. Although student spirit ran high in the snake dance preceding the game, the Broncs were sadly defeated by the Powell Panthers. '90 The Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps, headed by Commander Randal, completed its first year at Sheridan High School with an enrollment of 90 boys. These boys were instructed not only in military drill, but also in the history and organization of the Navy and our defense forces, in Navy trades, job, ships, aircraft, warfare, traditions, and jargon. Of the 90 boys, 85 received their uniforms, and a 20 man drill team, headed by Bill Foltz, was formed on a voluntary basis. It performed at basketball games and assemblies. In years to come, the drill team's activities will be in competition with other schools. Eventually, it is hoped that once during a cadet's high school years, he will be able to make a trip to visit a naval ship, at government expense. Several new columns were started including Ockview , a review of new records, movies, and books: Dear Aunt Blabby , modeled after Dear Abby ; and Alfalfa Says , a humorous view of just about everything. The Ock won several awards this year in its division. Jean Carroll placed second in the news category, and Wayne Chitwood got a first for a nonlocal editorial. Sara York and Connie Rawlings won firsts in literary and features respectively. The Ock as a whole won second place for front page makeup. The l'JG7 Bronc did very well in the High School Press Association judging. It won first for end sheets and division pages, second for cover, and second for layout. Juniors Make 17,000 Roses No one but the Juniors themselves can fully appreciate the many hours of hard work that was put into the beautiful prom this year. It involved the building of eight white arches, the making of 17,000 roses, and assembling of two bubbly fountains. The walls wrere covered with hundreds of yards of brick printed paper. The theme of the prom, The Days of Wine and Roses, this year announced for the first time by the Class of 69 , was presented in red roses on a green background. A before prom banquet was held at the Sheridan College Commons. The grand march, led by Senior Class President Denny Zeiser and his date, and Junior Class President Dick Tate and his date, began at 9:00 with music by a band from Salt Lake. An after prom show was held at the WYO followed by a 5:00 breakfast. The prom was a fitting beginning for the final activities of the Class of ”68 . 97 The grand march opens the 1968 Prom. (Seniors are recognized in the Senior Section.) 100 Band Achieves Highest Festival Honors Newcastle hosted the Spring Music Festival this year where the SHS Band was awarded 3 number 1 ratings. Ensembles and solos did equally well with 1 and 2 ratings, but no scores below that. Each year, these performers spend many hours memorizing and rehearsing to achieve the goal they reached this year. Band Day was another important trip. During the summer months the band marched in the Rodeo Parade, Indian Days Parade, and 4-H State Fair Parade in Douglas. Because of the commendable job they did during the Rodeo Parade and the three Rodeo Grand Marches a picnic was given to honor them. Playing at all football games and performing during some halftimes is just a small part of the Band's job. They also provide music for pep assemblies and basketball games. Sheridan High can be proud of its orchestra this year as its members have done a very fine job in their activities. They enjoyed attending a festival held in the fall at Upton in which the orchestras from Casper, Powell, and Sheridan performed for one another. Ken Sheldon, Jack Patton, Melany Moore, Janus Pilch, Carol Martin, and Earl Pust made up a sextet which attended the All-State Music Festival in Rawlins. The orchestra made an excellent showing at the District Music Festival in Newcastle for which it was accorded a One Rating. The ensemble made up of Ken Sheldon, Carol Martin, Melany Moore, Roberta Podgornik, Glen Wheeler, and Judy Redies also received a One Rating. Girls culottes were legalized and more casual dress at dances was allowed. The class elections, once held by the class officers and sponsors, were turned over to the council. All elections ran very smoothly and the students appreciated the „ usefulness of the Student Council. A. Degree at Dickenson State College and Masters at the University of North Dakota, Mr. William Kupper, our principal for the last 13 years, taught business and band at Gary, Minnesota. Forty-three months in the service was followed by the superintendency of Oberon, North Dakota. Mr. Kupper then returned to school at the University of North Dakota from 1949 to 1950. From '51 to '55 he was principal at Mahnomen, Minnesota, and in the Fall of 1955 he came to Sheridan. Mr. Kupper will not be SHS Principal next year, as he has been reassigned within the system. Mr. Popovich received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Montana State University and completed his fifth year of study at the University of Montana in Missoula. He served in the Navy for three years, came to Sheridan in 1950, and fell in love with Wyoming. He has been sponsor of Honor Society since 1957, and became assistant principal two years ago. This year he taught Honor Math 12, and he says one of his greatest joys is working with the students. 205 206 Dr. Deane Riggs. Superintendent of Sheridan Public Schools, received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma. He also has a Master of Arts Degree and an Education Degree in School Administration. New Administrators in District No. 7 UPPER LEFT: Mr. Louis Finch is Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum. Resource Center Added to Library At right, Mrs. Natalie Wright, head librarian, is shown holding one of the many fine books that are available in the SHS library and newly-organized resource center. At the bottom, Mrs. Graham, head of the resource center, and Mrs. Lewis, assistant librarian, are displaying earphones and volume regulators that are now available for use by the students. A variety of records broaden the choice of listening material. The records of the play HAMLET are especially popular and are in constant use by seniors who are studying this play in their English classes. The library and resource center provide the student body of SHS with pleasant surroundings and a pleasing atmosphere in which to read, study, and do research work. Counselors Host Planning Days Post High School Planning Day is just one of the many activities sponsored by the counselors that are of great help to the students. It consists of college representatives meeting with interested students for consultations. Another new program along the same line was an assembly during which college freshmen related their experiences to students and faculty. Achievement tests were administered to the Sophomores for the first time. College entrance exams and interest and aptitude tests are also given by the counselors. Counselors help students plan their high school courses and stimulate them to start thinking about future careers. By assisting in working out conflicts that arise in the modern day lives of SHS students, the counselors are an integral part of the faculty. ABOVE: Mr. Ward helps a student with registration. BELOW: The counselors are Mr. Ward, Miss Koehler, and Mrs. Pince. Music Dept. Has Busy Year The Music Department had a typically busy school year. The band led off with its performances at the football half-times. It also provided entertainment at the basketball games. Other activities included band concerts and the All School Talent Show. One noted band performance featured Mr. David Whitlow, staff member at the University of New Mexico, on the trumpet. The vocal music section gave many concerts throughout the year including the Christmas and Spring Concerts. The orchestra section also gave its share of concerts. Some of its members took part in providing the accompaniment for the play productions. SHS Dance Band plays for All-School Talent Show. A tool of the trade. Members of the Foreign Language Department are: Mrs. Gardner, Mrs. Farrens, and Miss Lee. Latin Instructor Retires The three foreign languages offered to SHS students are German, Latin, and Spanish. The German course, taught by Mrs. Farrens, can be taken a total of four years and consists of the conversation method and translation. Mrs. Gardner teaches Latin which is a two-year study. The first year consists of basic sentence structure and translation, the second year covers more grammar and the writings of Julius Caesar as translation material. SHS will lose Mrs. Gardner after her six years here. Spanish is offered to the student as a three year course. The first year covers the speaking and writing of the language on a controlled level. Second year Spanish goes into more grammar and an intense study of the speaking and writing techniques. Spanish III is an advanced study, consisting of usually independent study with the guidance of the Spanish teacher, Miss Lee. 211 One of the activities of the History Department's staff was the History Workshop held in October at the Sheridan Center Inn. At this workshop, ideas and teaching techniques were exchanged among those attending. To aid in the students’ understanding in various history fields, guest speakers were invited. One of these was Mr. Torbert, who spoke to the American History classes concerning Social Security and its benefits. Another was Mr. Iver Moore, who spoke to the Problems classes about the Welfare Department and its work in the community. Miss Horne was the History Department's new member. Her classes included World History and American History. Mr. Bensen and Mr. Hansen discuss tomorrow's lesson with student-teachers Mr. Burke and Mr. LeRoy. History Teachers Attend Workshop Members of the Science Department are: Mr. Yearous, Mr. Lodge, Mr. Isaccson, Mrs. Brantz, Mr. Byrtus, Mr. Allen, and Mr. Nielsen. Mr. Allen Heads Science Department To understand natural phenomena and develop the individual student's mind scientifically is the goal of the Science Department. Various science courses strive to meet this goal; some of these are biology, chemistry, earth science, physics, and general science. Mrs. Ellen Brantz was the Science Department’s only new member this year. Her classes included biology and general science. To further the students' understanding of scientific concepts movies, slides, live and prepared specimens, as well as the laboratory exercises are used. Mr. Allen demonstrates the proper technique in dissecting a frog. 213 Mr. Pigg Named Outstanding Young Educator This year the math department has introduced a new program which involves senior math students tutoring those students who need help. At the right is Mr. Pigg who teaches such courses as Algebra I, Geometry, and Honors Math 10. This year he received an award given by the Sheridan Jaycees recognizing him as the Outstanding Young Educator. Congratulations Mr. Pigg. LEFT; The classroom is not the only place a teacher must work--here Mr. Yearous prepares lessons in his office. The members of the math department are: Mr. Cloyd, Mr. Pigg. Mr. Robb, Mr. Donahue, Mr. Hunt, Mr. Popovich, Mr. Yearous, Mr. Ring. 214 Mr. Michelena and Mr. Termes, art instructors, admire student sculpture. Art Dept. Gets New Desks The art department of Sheridan High School provides the students with the opportunity to express themselves creatively through art. and to learn new techniques of drawing, painting, and sculpture. To better achieve these goals, a full time teacher was hired this year, plus a part-time instructor. There were also two student teachers. Miss Thompson, and Miss Dalquist. A new bulletin board was constructed in the lower hall, and art was continuously displayed on it. This included four one-man shows by Elizabeth Ludecke, Connie Robinson, Alice Byers, and Julius Pine. The Spring Art Show was accompanied by a vocal music concert. SHS also participated in the Sheridan College Art Show. Alice Byers and Erna Bitters work on art projects. 215 Members of the English Department are: Mr. Crimmel, Mrs. Sprague, Mr. Koeneman, Mr. Schiffer, Miss Waisner, and Miss Piz. Team Teaching Tried In English Dept. The English Department of SHS was enlivened with the addition of Mr. Fred Crimmel, Mrs. Claudia Raecke, and Mr. Robert Randall to its staff. Mr. Kenneth Schiffer rejoined the teaching staff after his tour of duty with the National Guard. In his absence, Mrs. Gail Mark taught the first nine weeks. Many new things were instituted into the English Department this year; one of these being team-teaching. This project was undertaken by Mr. Clifford Harkins and Mr. Kenneth Schiffer. Another novelty presented this year was the study of the Bible. Miss Gerhardt's English IV classes studied this as a literature selection. 216 Mrs. Sprague helps a student with her composition. Miss Gerhardt in her typical stance as she conducts a test. Student-teacher. Miss Thompson, finds teaching is also a learning process. Miss Gerhardt. Miss Lee, Mr. Harkins. Mrs. Raecke, Mrs. Gardner, and Mr. Randall complete the English stall. 217 wm mmWt MM MHH Home Economics Builds For Tomorrow The homemaking classes prepare young women to meet the needs of our times by helping them adapt to change, and by creating security in the home through proper understanding of foods and nutrition, management of personal and family resources, correct clothing selection, care, and construction, and through good family relationships. Homemaking classes have many resource people from the Sheridan area as guest speakers each year. Their aim is to help young women obtain better understanding of themselves and their dual role as career women and homemakers in our modern society. The special interest club of this department is Future Homemakers of America. P.E. Stresses Fundamentals P. E. provides a break in the normal routine of regular classes. As a freshman the student takes it three days a week. This is reduced to two in his sophomore year. The credits earned in this class are required for graduation. If especially interested one can be a P. E. leader his last two years, which involves aiding the teachers in supervision of the underclassmen. ABOVE: Mrs. Lyon inspects a new sewing maching. E. program. program. mmmm nii ►i 218 Teachers' Aids—A Welcome Addition As a part of a new program this year, five teachers' aids were added to the SHS staff. Their activities varied from making tests and correcting papers to doing research work for the different departments. A new secretary in the office this year is Mrs. Mary Lou Keating. This addition lightened the burden of paper work for the office staff. Student helpers assisted the office by working the switch board, sorting the mail, and delivering messages. UPPER LEFT: Mrs. Keating, Mrs. Harris, and Mrs. Huling are busy performing their numerous daily jobs in the high school office. ABOVE: As part of a new program this year, Mrs. Grimes, Mrs. Morn, Mrs. Livingston, Mrs. Peck, and Mrs. Hull (not pictured), assist the teachers in various departments at SHS. 219 The goal of the Industrial Arts classes is to help the student form occupational objectives through individual effort. The courses offered are Agriculture, Machine Shop, Welding, Electronics, Woodworking, and Mechanical Drawing. Agriculture is taught by Mr. Hartwig and covers such things as crop planting and the care of animals. Under Mr. Hansen’s supervision of Machine Shop, the skill of tool and die making is acquired by the pupils. Mr. Hansen also teaching Welding. Electronics, taught by Mr. Ring, covers such areas as the theory and maintenance of the five tube radio. Mrs. Moore teaches Woodworking and Mechanical Drawing. The techniques of the sander, drills, and different types of saws are taught. Mechanical Drawing teaches the student perspective and other basic fundamentals. Mr. Hansen helps Ricky Ball with his welding project. Mr. Hartwig Leaves After 23 Years Mr. Hansen, Mr. Ring, Mr. Moore, and Mr. Hartwig make up the Industrial Arts Staff. 220 Business Education Expands—D. E. The rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together. This is our hope. . . With this faith we shall be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day. . .
