With the proceeds of the annual magazine sales, the juniors entertained the seniors at the gala Junior Prom in May. When the activities bus was purchased, 36 the class saw that it was identified with a bronc on each side. After numerous activities as juniors, the class of ’62 is looking forward to next year when they will be mighty seniors. Each morning the team captains tallied the earnings of the evening before. The money rolled in! In four hours the class transformed the gym into a cow camp in the mountains. The ’61 Cowtown was the best ever, as any junior will tell you. These snapshots illustrate a few of the many activities of the junior class, including magazine sales, purchase of class rings, Cowtown, Prom, painting the new bus for the Broncs, and others. Stuffed animals were much in evidence among the many prizes awarded to top salesmen. Mr. Lillibridge and Mrs. Embry are giving their sound advice to a Sophomore girl. Sophomores These girls are shopping. Do you think they will buy the bracelet? This is a typical Sophomore English Class. It just has to be a test! Can this possibly be a normal class? One of the most outstanding projects of the Sophomore class, was the presentation of a new fifty-star flag of America. It will always be a symbol of this exceptional class. The Sophomores have also been very active in most all school organizations, including student coun- cil, most of the athletic teams, the newspaper, and the yearbook. Without the help of the class sponsors and the excellent guidance of the S.H.S. teachers, this class could never have been the complete success that it is. Perhaps you remember the time you got an invitation to check out of the library because you were talking, or maybe you were asked to spend some time with the office staff when you were late to school. Now think again. Remember the time that teacher gave you the benefit of the doubt when she suspected you might deserve a C-f- instead of a B -? And remember when that other one was so helpful when you needed help most in your math? No doubt every student at S.H.S. will recall many similar experiences as he goes over the pages to come. 59 Our School Board Directs Us To the Student of Sheridan High School) A the competition for survival in an increasingly complex world becomes reore intense with each passing year, it seems Quite possible that your generation will be called to bat in as tough a contest as the world ha ever seen. They believe an acquaintance with the civilization of Greece and Rome will help them understand and appraise this world of today which is indebted to ancient civilization in its governments, laws, literatures, languages and arts.” The foregoing was taken from the charter of the Junior - ass.cal League to explain the purpose of the organization, which, in Sheridan Hmh is made up of students who have completed 1 year of Latin study. The officers of JCL are named to correspond with the Latin titles for the heads of the Roman government. The Consul and Praetor are the heads of the organization. The 1960-61 roll of GAL sported a total of 339 names, nearly three-fourths of the girls in SHS. This illustrates the great part physical fitness plays in the lives of our students. From autumn till spring these girls energetically participate in sports which range from single competition to eleven member teams. In order to receive anything in GAL from entry to the organization, which requires one-hundred points, to the ultimate two-thousand point pin, the girls must participate in athletic activities, assist during tournaments, serve as a student gym leader, or be elected to serve as an officer or board member in GAL. It is truly an active girl who receives either a letter sweater, which requires 1,500 points, or the 2,000 point pin. Remarkably, five girls will be awarded 2,000 point pins this year, they are: Glenda German, Nancy Hayes, Penny Johnson. Mary Jane Slutz, and Charlotte Veach. The eleven girls who earned sweaters are: Seniors: Mary Jane Slutz, Glenda German, Lynn Janney, Penny Johnson, Wallene Drake. Activities Wlial's going on this weekend? The preceding is a typical teenage question these days. The answer can usually he found on the bulletin hoards, in the homeroom an- i nouncements, or on the school calendar. There may he a Geisha girl making her theatrical dehut, a basketball hero making a goal for the wrong team, or a Valentine queen being kissed; but whatever it is, you can bet it will be fun. The Bronc Staff hopes it has been able to capture the highlights of this year’s activities. GIRLS’ STATE Last summer, at the 1960 session of Wonderful Wyoming Girls’ State, Ky Collins became the first girl from Sheridan to serve as Governor. SHERIDAN BRONCS SET 3 RECORDS The 1960-61 Sheridan Broncs basketball team set three records that will be hard to beat. Under the able leadership of Coach Morris Zempel, the Neilson Heighters won 22 straight games. This almost doubled the old record of 12 games set by the 1923 basketball squad. The Blue and Gold chargers wound up with an impressive 24-5 season total. The 24 victories were the most ever posted bv a S.H.S. team. Proving their ability to knock the bottom out of the basket, the eagle-eyed Broncs set a third record by scoring 1,722 points, the most in a single campaign. Chosen by his teammates as Co-Captain, Ron Baker helped lead this year’s Broncs. Being a great team man, Ron was willing to sacrifice “all” for the Broncs. 112 Shots From the Season Reinhart’s rubber arm extends up and beyond. In only his second year Coach Morris Zemple proved himself to be one of the finest basketball coaches in the state. Baker, with knees pumping and eyes up, breaks open. Hartwig points the way toward the basket as he lets the ball sail. Green waves another one into the hoop with a southpaw shot. Zemple’s teams have won two straight District Championships, a first for Rronc cage mentors, and have played in the State Class AA finals for two years in a row, another first for the Bronc coach. Hilpert appears to slap the ball on its projectory toward the rim. Anderson demonstrates the way to elude the crowd by lofting one up and over. 113 Broncs 38 Billings 50 Broncs 36 Billings 68 Broncs 62 Cody 44 Broncs.... 46 Powell 35 Broncs 45 Worland ... 51 Broncs..... 60 Lovell .... 62 Broncs 66 Glendive 53 Broncs 61 Miles City ... .... 49 Broncs 59 Buffalo 53 Broncs 71 Billhres West 43 Broncs 65 BittMLWcst 22. Due to the lack of good weather and upperclassmen, the season was not as successful as it might have been. Sheridan High School Graduates 197 Seniors in 1961 Spring 1961 treated graduating seniors much as each spring treats those who enter the world from high school. While Cuba rioted and Korea fell, the graduating class of 1961 breakfasted, held the annual sing out, enjoyed a Story picnic, swam at Desmet, attended Baccalaureate, and on receiving their diplomas heard Acting Governor Jack Gage urge that they not underestimate themselves. All this in one week left kittle to he desired but time. School was out on Wed. Senior breakfast which followed on Friday was held in the cafeteria with the activities ending at the sing out before the entire student body that afternoon. The Hev. Raymond Clark, Episcopal rector. delivered the Baccalaureate address Sunday afternoon. The honorable Jack Gage, Acting Governor, addressed the graduating students Tuesday evening previous to the presentation of their diplomas by W. E. Cook, President of District 7 school l oard. Interspersed with the activities, seniors took time out to swim at Lake Desmet, view prom pictures at local photography studios and test their skill at maneuvering automobiles through the parking lot in front of the school, much to the disappointment of teachers trying to teach the remaining underclassmen. As each class before them, they turn now to their future. The Bronc staff extends their best wishes for success. Last day of school Singout Senior Breakfast Picnic and Last, but surely not least — Graduation On tlie following pages the Bronc acknowledges the merchants and businesses which have made possible the printing of this yearbook.
