Physical Education Students are required to take two ears of Physical Education for graduation from Sheridan High. These are taken in the Freshman and Sophomore years. Students learn many varied and interesting sports while they keep physically fit. Vocational In order to meet the problems of later life, students are offered a wide choice of vocational subjects. These include General Shop, Agriculture I, II, and III, Woodworking I and II, Mechanical Drawing I and II, Marriage and Family and Home Ec. I and II. Above from left to right are Mr. Moore, who teaches Mechanical Drawing, Woodworking, and general Shop; Mrs. Phillips, who teaches Home Ec and Marriage and family relations; and Mr. Hartwig, who instructs his classes in Agriculture. Languages Two languages, Latin and Spanish, are included in the curriculum at Sheridan High. Latin gives the students a better understanding of our own language, and also the culture of the ancient Romans. Spanish will prove very valuable in our relations with our Latin American neighbors. Above from left to right are Mrs. Owens, who teaches Latin; Mrs. Farrens, who instructs Latin and English I; and Mr. Straley, who has classes in Spanish and World History. Below is Miss Schlattman, who teaches classes in Girls Physical Education. Mr. Ayers, Boys Physical Education Instructor is not pictured.

Science In the varied courses of science taught at S.H.S. the students are taught the science of life and living organisms, and in Chemistry they are taught the composition of substances and their transformation. As the nation forges ahead in scientific achievements, more and more scientists are needed. Above from left to right are: Mr. Lodge, who teaches Chemistry and Physics; Mr. Allen, who instructs classes in Biology I and II; Mr. Harrington, who teaches Biology; and Mr. Nielson, who teaches General Science and Technical Science. Commercial The Commercial courses include Typing I and II, Shorthand I and II, Bookkeeping I and II, and Business Arithmetic. A new member to the Commercial department, Miss Mellum, ’■ teaThes Shorthand and Typing. These courses are very valuable to those planning to enter the business world. Above are Mr. Renkel (left) who teaches Bookkeeping and Business Arithmetic; Miss Mellum (middle) who teaches Shorthand and Typing; and Mr. Boint (right) who instructs his classes in Typing. Below is Mr. Flannigan who teaches Distributive Education, and is also the Boys Counselor. Distributive Education A new course offered to the students of Sheridan High, is distributive education, which is taught by Mr. Flannigan. Mr. Flannigan is also the Boys’ Counselor this year.

Above is Mrs. Marie Avery who instructs her Above is Miss Hansen, the librarian, giving some helpful advice classes in art. to one of the students of Sheridan High. Art Art is taught by Mrs. Avery, who has a busy schedule to keep pace with. For half a day she teaches classes at the high school, then travels around the grade schools. The main project of the art students is painting Christmas posters, which decorate the lower halls of S.H.S. before the approaching holiday. Library The Sheridan High School library is kept in order by Miss Hansen. This library is very well stocked with interesting and educational books of great use to the students. Many research books are available to the students, which offer assistance to one seeking term-paper information. The library is frequently used by students before and after school. Below are three music teachers, Mr. Avery (left) who teaches Band and English 1, Mr. Ruppel, who teaches choral groups and Mr. Wheeler, who teaches Orchestra. 18 Music Mr. Ruppel is the director of Vocal Music which includes Freshman Glee, Sophomore Chorus, A cappella Choir and Madrigal. The instrumental music is taught by Mr. Avery, who teaches band, and Mr. Wheeler, who has Orchestra practice during first period.
