The most important courses in Sheridan High for preparing the student for future life as good citizens are taught in Social Studies classes. There, courses include Geography, World History, American History, Latin American History, Problems of Democracy, and International Relations. Geography, World History, and American History are graduation requirements. In order to keep up on today’s world affairs, every student is expected to study current events in weekly magazines. English Below (left) is Miss Waisner who teaches English II and IV, and on the right is Mr. Kern Brown, who teaches English III and Public Speaking. All students of Sheridan High are required to take at least three years of English to graduate. If a student wishes to take English a fourth year, he has the choice of a regular English course, or a college prep course. In all English classes one semester is devoted to the study of grammar and the second semester is devoted to literature, which includes many of Shakespeare’s works. In addition, most students are required to do research, write essays, give oral reports, and write a book report every six weeks. Below from left to right are: Mr. Johnson who teaches English I and II, and Journalism; Mr. Wood who has classes in English III and IV; Mrs. Sprague who instructs English II and III; and Miss Lyon who teaches English I and II.

Science In the varied courses of science taught at S.H.S. the students are taught the science of life and living organisms, and in Chemistry they are taught the composition of substances and their transformation. As the nation forges ahead in scientific achievements, more and more scientists are needed. Above from left to right are: Mr. Lodge, who teaches Chemistry and Physics; Mr. Allen, who instructs classes in Biology I and II; Mr. Harrington, who teaches Biology; and Mr. Nielson, who teaches General Science and Technical Science. Commercial The Commercial courses include Typing I and II, Shorthand I and II, Bookkeeping I and II, and Business Arithmetic. A new member to the Commercial department, Miss Mellum, ’■ teaThes Shorthand and Typing. These courses are very valuable to those planning to enter the business world. Above are Mr. Renkel (left) who teaches Bookkeeping and Business Arithmetic; Miss Mellum (middle) who teaches Shorthand and Typing; and Mr. Boint (right) who instructs his classes in Typing. Below is Mr. Flannigan who teaches Distributive Education, and is also the Boys Counselor. Distributive Education A new course offered to the students of Sheridan High, is distributive education, which is taught by Mr. Flannigan. Mr. Flannigan is also the Boys’ Counselor this year.
