They are so important that everywhere we go they are always present. To these, our guides, we all too often fail to voice our appreciation. Board of Education 10 Sheridan High School Administration n AGNES L. KOEHLOR Girl's Counselor New Mexico State College, B.S. M.S. Colorado University Sponsorship: F.N.A. COUNSELORS COUNSELORS ALFRED FLANIGAN Boy’s Counselor University of Oklahoma, B.B.A. Subjects: Geography; Teacher Coordinator in Distributive Education 12 CUSTODIANS The lunchroom is being efficiently run this year by: from left to right, Katie Motica, Algeva McDowell, Ruby Dangle, Marie Steel, Mable Turley and Martha Mapes. Pictured below is Mrs. Lee, Director of the Cafeteria. LUNCHROOM Sheridan High's biggest problem; paper strewn on the floor, is just one of the jobs taken care of by our custodians, who are, from left to right, back row: Patsy Silla, Edward Gibson; front row, Pete Laird, and Tom Morrison. 13 English Below (left) is Miss Waisner who teaches English II and IV, and on the right is Mr. Kern Brown, who teaches English III and Public Speaking. All students of Sheridan High are required to take at least three years of English to graduate. If a student wishes to take English a fourth year, he has the choice of a regular English course, or a college prep course. In all English classes one semester is devoted to the study of grammar and the second semester is devoted to literature, which includes many of Shakespeare’s works. In addition, most students are required to do research, write essays, give oral reports, and write a book report every six weeks. Below from left to right are: Mr. Johnson who teaches English I and II, and Journalism; Mr. Wood who has classes in English III and IV; Mrs. Sprague who instructs English II and III; and Miss Lyon who teaches English I and II. Social Studies Below: Miss J. Johnson, (left) who teaches American History, and Latin American History, glances through a book with Mr. Fuger, who teaches Geography, World History, and Geology. The most important courses in Sheridan High for preparing the student for future life as good citizens are taught in Social Studies classes. There, courses include Geography, World History, American History, Latin American History, Problems of Democracy, and International Relations. Geography, World History, and American History are graduation requirements. In order to keep up on today’s world affairs, every student is expected to study current events in weekly magazines. Below from left to right are: Mr. Ladd, who teaches Geography; Mrs. Embry who instructs American History, International Relations, and Problems of Democracy; and Mr. Lillibridge, who has classes in World History. Science In the varied courses of science taught at S.H.S. the students are taught the science of life and living organisms, and in Chemistry they are taught the composition of substances and their transformation. As the nation forges ahead in scientific achievements, more and more scientists are needed. Above from left to right are: Mr. Lodge, who teaches Chemistry and Physics; Mr. Allen, who instructs classes in Biology I and II; Mr. Harrington, who teaches Biology; and Mr. Nielson, who teaches General Science and Technical Science. Commercial The Commercial courses include Typing I and II, Shorthand I and II, Bookkeeping I and II, and Business Arithmetic. A new member to the Commercial department, Miss Mellum, ’■ teaThes Shorthand and Typing. These courses are very valuable to those planning to enter the business world. Above are Mr. Renkel (left) who teaches Bookkeeping and Business Arithmetic; Miss Mellum (middle) who teaches Shorthand and Typing; and Mr. Boint (right) who instructs his classes in Typing. Below is Mr. Flannigan who teaches Distributive Education, and is also the Boys Counselor. Distributive Education A new course offered to the students of Sheridan High, is distributive education, which is taught by Mr. Flannigan. Mr. Flannigan is also the Boys’ Counselor this year. Physical Education Students are required to take two ears of Physical Education for graduation from Sheridan High. These are taken in the Freshman and Sophomore years. Students learn many varied and interesting sports while they keep physically fit. Vocational In order to meet the problems of later life, students are offered a wide choice of vocational subjects. These include General Shop, Agriculture I, II, and III, Woodworking I and II, Mechanical Drawing I and II, Marriage and Family and Home Ec. I and II. Above from left to right are Mr. Moore, who teaches Mechanical Drawing, Woodworking, and general Shop; Mrs. Phillips, who teaches Home Ec and Marriage and family relations; and Mr. Hartwig, who instructs his classes in Agriculture. Languages Two languages, Latin and Spanish, are included in the curriculum at Sheridan High. Latin gives the students a better understanding of our own language, and also the culture of the ancient Romans. Spanish will prove very valuable in our relations with our Latin American neighbors. Above from left to right are Mrs. Owens, who teaches Latin; Mrs. Farrens, who instructs Latin and English I; and Mr. Straley, who has classes in Spanish and World History. Below is Miss Schlattman, who teaches classes in Girls Physical Education. Mr. Ayers, Boys Physical Education Instructor is not pictured. Above is Mrs. Marie Avery who instructs her Above is Miss Hansen, the librarian, giving some helpful advice classes in art. to one of the students of Sheridan High. Art Art is taught by Mrs. Avery, who has a busy schedule to keep pace with. For half a day she teaches classes at the high school, then travels around the grade schools. The main project of the art students is painting Christmas posters, which decorate the lower halls of S.H.S. before the approaching holiday. Library The Sheridan High School library is kept in order by Miss Hansen. This library is very well stocked with interesting and educational books of great use to the students. Many research books are available to the students, which offer assistance to one seeking term-paper information. The library is frequently used by students before and after school. Below are three music teachers, Mr. Avery (left) who teaches Band and English 1, Mr. Ruppel, who teaches choral groups and Mr. Wheeler, who teaches Orchestra. 18 Music Mr. Ruppel is the director of Vocal Music which includes Freshman Glee, Sophomore Chorus, A cappella Choir and Madrigal. The instrumental music is taught by Mr. Avery, who teaches band, and Mr. Wheeler, who has Orchestra practice during first period. Above are: Mr. Popovich, who teaches Plane Geometry and Solid Geometry; Mr. Cloyd who has classes in Algebra I and II; Mr. Yearous who instructs General Math and Algebra I; and Mr. Hunt, who teaches Plane Geometry and Algebra I. Mathematics The varied Mathematics or Math'’ courses include General Math, Algebra 1 and II, Plane Geometry, Solid Geometry, and Trigonometry. To graduate from S.H.S., two years of Math are required. But to many, this requirement does not satisfy their thirst for greater knowledge in the field of mathematics, so they go on to take Algebra II and Solid Geometry. Math, as is said, keeps the brain stimulated and dusts the cobwebs from the corners. 19 CLASSES Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores, Freshmen — the students of Sheridan High School. These are the'scholars, the merrymakers, the athletes, the dramatists, the singers, the artists, and the other unsung heroes” whom we have been associated with this year at Sheridan High School. The triumphant Seniors, the enthusiastic Juniors, the progressive Sophomores, and even the Freshmen recruits, are pictured, for you, on the following pages of your 1959 Bronc. The Class of ’59 The Senior Class Officers on the Ball. Roger Linnett, Vice President; Joan Blanchard, Secretary; Ben Powell, President; Frankie Gillen, Treasurer Roger, Frankie, Joan, and Ben chalk up another strike for the Senior Class. THE SENIOR CLASS The class of ’59 boasts scholars, athletes, musicians, dramatists, comedians, and the fun lovers who may always be seen or heard doing their part in the activities of Sheridan High School. All merge to form the bulk of the Senior Class. Although not all of us are scholars, musicians, or athletes, we still possess the fierce pride in our class which over the years has resulted in unity and success in every undertaking. Our class, known for its exotic and novel ideas, produced the 1958 Junior-Senior Prom, Some Enchanted Evening,” which will be remembered as the best ever. We leave the Class of ’59 to Memory. May she preserve it well. 22 Seniors DENISE AKSAM1T Intramural Sports, Pep Club. RICHARD ALLEN Brimingharr, High School, Detroit, Michigan; Intramural Sports, Basketball Champions. PERRY A. The two freshman representatives are chosen in the fall. One of the activities of the Student Council is to keep up the standards of the school. They also participate in the Freshman Orientation, by giving speeches to the new students. Under the leadership of Miss Johnson, the Student Council serves as a link between the students and the faculty. The group is one of both government and leadership. 66 National Honor Society Character, scholarship, leadership, and service are qualifications of the members of National Honor Society. Members are chosen by faculty-student vote on the basis of these qualifications every spring and fall. Fall elections are open only to seniors while spring elections include members of the outgoing Junior class as well as members of the Senior class. Only the upper one-third of the two classes are eligible for election into N.H.S. Amid the park atomsphere of Some Enchanted Evening, the Juniors and Seniors danced to the music of Stan Richards. From the appearance of the Juniors, the spectators would have never guessed that only a few short hours before they had been dressed in Levi's, armed with paint brushes, and working, as they had for the previous three months, to complete the Prom. Right: The Prom Servers are Beth Gale, Ted George, Dave Media. At twelve o'clock the Prom was over. But there still remained hours of fun at the after-the-prom party sponsored by the merchants of Sheridan. Right: Other Prom Servers are Richard MacCatherine, Martha Wright, Dershie Bridgford, Bob Hammond and Roxie Pedulla. Marking the beginning of an ' enchanted evening,” the Grand March afforded us with the opportunity of displaying for our community the results of weeks of work on our Junior-Senior Prom. Homecoming Queen, Tonia Rulli A 1958 Homecoming Our 1958 Homecoming Queen, Tonia Rulli, presided with her attendants, Billie Howell and Maurita Redle, over a day overflowing with excitement, happiness, and glory for Sheridan High School. Our Homecoming, one of the most active in years, was ushered in with the advent of the Coronation Assembly in the gym. Captain Brice Luedtke crowned the queen, and the entire court was presented with gifts from the 'S' Club and the football team. The radiance of the court was soon transmitted to the entire student body, and the pep rally which followed was a spirited success. With our condemned Casper dummy—taken from the second floor hall where it had hung the preceding week, we snake-danced to his bonfire execution. The Senior class, having out yelled the other classes, lit the bonfire; thus concluding the afternoon's festivities. Maurita Redle Activities broke only to be resumed that evening with much more exciting ones. Beating a path through the Casper Mustangs, the Sheridan Broncs headed their already impressive list of victories with a State Co-championship. The elation expressed by the Broncs as they carried the coach off the field was mirrored in every SHS student, for we knew that our team and school was the very best. To climax a perfect day, the GAL sponsored the annual Homecoming Dance. Billie Howell Dances Dances are one of the many highlights of our jam-packed high school year. These dances are of various make and caliber: formal, casual, and costume. Practically any occasion warrants a dance, and the SHS'ers find themselves putting their best feet forward not only during the dances given traditional status in the SH-S curriculum, such as the Sweetheart Ball, or the 'S' Club Dance, but also during dances after the ball games and plays. Multi-reasons are responsible for the attendance at the dances. Some come to learn to dance, others to execute their dancing skills; many come to listen to the music, and others to watch the intermission entertainment inevitably provided by volunteers from the audience. The students leave the dances with one conclusion, It was fun! r FNA SWEETHEARTS Nancy Tate and Tom Neighbors Above: Nancy Lynn Tate and Thomas Churchill Neighbors reigned lovingly over the annual Sweetheart Ball, sponsored by the Future Nurses of America. Right: At the Snowball Dance there was great evidence of fraternization between the Casper and Sheridan schools. Isn't that C. R. Gibbs promoting good relations? 128 F.F.A. Queen Micky Mooney and President Rex Roy Spracklen. The F.F.A. Sweetheart Dance is an annual affair sponsored by the Sheridan Chapter of the Future Farmers of America. The boys nominate and choose their queen who is crowned at the dance by the president. The ever present stag line attends our dances regularly. Because they never ask a girl to dance they go away frustrated. That is O.K. though, everyone else has a good time. Put your best foot forward. Hey, does anyone know what we are looking at! Freshman Mixer Cowtown Our Freshman Mixer is a costume party where each class dresses in a different category. Prizes are given for the outstanding costumes of each class. Everyone, but everyone, comes dressed western to the enjoyable Cowtown Dance which is thrown by the Juniors. COUNTY PUBLIC UBWET 130 The Bronc Staff has dedicated this annual to you, the students of Sheridan High School. In the hope that through our efforts the memories of the past year may be preserved, we have endeavored to present a record of those hours we studied, the hours we didn't study, and those hours we should have studied. To the Seniors of 1959 we extend our best wishes and congratulations for the record they have maintained throughout their years in SHS. Sincerely, °A ADVERTISEMENTS Bright lights! Merchandise! Well-shined cars! These are the symbols of our Main Street at night. Most of Sheridan's firms solicit the student's trade by advertising in this section. When you stop to think about it, this community we live in has been improved in many ways by the N. A. Nelson Construction Company. There is an impressive number of schools and churches that are Nelson Construction Company buildings or additions, and there are enough of our public buildings and utilities bearing the N. A. Nelson Construction crest to establish beyond a question of a doubt that the Nelson Construction Company's first consideration is the Community. So many low bids simply mean that less profit is made for the construction that has definitely improved and benefited this Queen City of the Cowboy State. N. A. NELSON CONSTRUCTION CO.
