It is the story of this school year in pictures. We, the members of Bronc Staff, have tried to cram one whole year into about 160 pages. Finding this impossible, we have tried to plan this book so that when you glance through it in some future year, these pictures and stories will become doorways to pleasant memories of the past. v,,,....---r' kan- l NO Nl? This is your book, just as S.H.S. is your school, and we hope that you will enjoy this record of your activities in 1958. These few pages will some day serve as doorways through which you may wander in your imagination to meet old friends and recall past experiences. 0-fl-Ifvs ana' , It is the unceasing hope of the staff of the Sheridan High School that your opportunities for a full education are better than at any previous time. Educate is not a transitive verb. No one can educate you but yourself. The importance of the opportunities for both breadth and depth of a liberal education and understanding is what you must measure and evaluate while in school. The Student Council, usually composed of a representative from each home room. was made up of class representatives. Each class except the freshmen took out petitions the spring before and then elected their quota of memhersfsix seniors, six juniors, and four sophomores. The freshmen sent two representatives the second semester. Wheli school opened in the fall, the Student Council was ready to go! They hegan the year by participating in the Freshman Orientation. Together with members of the Honor Society several council members gave welcoming speeches informing the incoming freshmen about S.H.S. and its activities. The tree which decorated the lower hall during the Christ- mas season was purchased by this organiza- tion. Under the leadership of Miss John- son the body governed the school in an able manner throughout the year. Serving as a link between the students and the faculty, the group was one of both govern- ment and leadership. The girls were divided into two parties, the Fron- tier and the Pioneer, signifying the national political parties. The House, Senate, and Court were the three branches of the government in which the girls were placed. State and national governmental procedures were taught. The girls had their serious and amus- ing memories by which to remember their week at Girls' State. 572 M70 al In the primary and general elections, state officers were chosen by the girls. Kathie Owens was elected justice of the Supreme Court. The 1957 Secretary of State was Molly Sampson. Being on the OCK staff enables students to become better acquainted with the funda- mentals of journalism and how to produce a newspaper. Various editors are in charge of different phases of getting the paper to press on time. These people are chosen for this duty in the spring along with new staff members. Being a member of this group is a very profitable experience if you are interested in journalism. Circulation editors, Ethel Harper and Trudy Clark. and Sports editor, Sandra Johnson are busy working on their parts of the Ocksheperida. The OCK is a paper full of various articles. You can find anything from jokes to school news and the honor roll. Editorials and stu- dent contributions are also found in this versatile school paper. Teachers submit outstanding work to the OCK staff and much of this is chosen for use in issues of the Ocksheperida. The paper, crammed full of school news, only costs ten cents an issue or one dollar for the entire school year. 0605564005-f6Z667t ' . The OCK staff edits twelve papers each school year. ln these editions, all school activ- ities, special events, and advertisements from downtown contributors are covered. Interviews of teachers and students are as- signed to members of this staff. Also each person is required to write a feature article every week in addition to regular assignments. Staffers who have had one hundred inches of copy in print are eligible for membership in the honorary journalism organization, Quill and Scroll. All members of the staff strive to earn this honor. Sandy Harper-Exchange editor, Carolyn Bell and Jane Lodge-Manag ing editors, and Cynthia Barnhart and Connie Cosby-Business mana- gers, work ou Nancy Belus, Barbara Baker, Viva Baker, Barb Hunnell, and Judy Bambolis study old papers for ideas for their particular assignments. Each year members of the staff journey to Laramie for Journalism week-end. At this meeting delegates attend sessions keyed to pub- lishing a newspaper. The goal of every athlete that participates in any of the four major sports, football, basketball, wrestling or track is to become a member of the HS Club. This high honor is achieved by earning at least one letter in a varsity sport. ln order to qualify for this letter he has to beurecommended by the coach and approved by the student council. These recommendations are based on playing time and value to the squad. The main object of this club is to promote and uphold the ideals of good sportsmanship. Throughout the year the GSH Club is in charge of the concessions at school athletic contests and certain other functions. The money which is earned by this job goes toward the purchase of jackets for the senior members of the club and for the promo- tion of the annual HS Club dance which is held each spring. Leading the S Club activities this year were President, LeRoy Westika, Vice President, Dan Madiag Sec- retary-Treasurer, Joe Sthorer. ' Every morning, Tuesdays through Fridays, at eight o'clock, a group of musicians, known collectively as the Sheridan High School Orchestra, gather in room seven of the administration building to practice until school starts. Their director is Mr. Gerald Wheeler. Mr. Wheeler, former Alliance, Nebraska, high school orchestra director, has reorganized and expanded Sheridan High's orchestra so that it's performances have become well known and much sought after throughout the city. The orchestra's busy schedule included a Thanksgiving program, accompanying the vocal choruses for the Christmas program, a Spring Concert, a performance for the Sheri- dan Educational Association, all highlighted by a two-day clinic with the high school orchestra of Casper, Wyoming. llndzr thi lllY'flll0Il l of ferald Wheeler . and with plenty of practice . . . the orchestra is transformed from this . . . . . . to this ' . E' de? 'aw These five people are the head of the 1957 Sheridan High School Bronc Football team. They are, standing in the Jack row from left to right: Head Coach Rollins, Coach Tuger and Coach White. In the front row are Co-Captains Walter Grey and Ed Scott. The ball handlers of the team, the backfield, form an HS which shows that it takes more than just one player to form a 'LS tate Championship team. Starting at the top of the S is Dick Kuzara, Junior wingbackg Walter Grey, Senior fullback: Ron Filbert, Senior tailbackg Tom George, Junior fullback: Larry Lilley, Senior blocking- backg LeRoy Westika, Senior wingbackg Dean Johnson, Senior wingbackg Dave Madia, Sophomore tailbackg Mike Booth,.Junior fullbackg and Brice Luedtke, Junior block- ingback. This was Sheridan's best football season since 1953 when they were state champions. They were defeated but once this season, which was in a non-conference tilt with Powell. They tied with Cas- per after a hard, well played game by both teams. Both teams were picked for the basement honors in the Big 5', at the beginning of the year. So both Casper and Sheridan upset the apple cart by fight- ing their way to the State Championship. This action shot shows just what kind of games Sheridan played this year, hard fought games with lots of team spirit. These four Seniors who all saw plenty of action on the first string are, back row, left to right: Tom Reinhart, All-State tackle, and Phil Small, tackle. Front row: Joe Stohrer, center, and Albin Dygert, tackle. Ron Filbert made 99 points throughout the sea- This year Sheridan's State Championship team placed three members on the All-State team. The three players on this team are Ron Filbert, Ed Scott, and Tom Reinhart. Ron Filbert, 175 pounder, was chosen for the berth as All-State tailback. Ed Scott, 164 pounds, was chosen as one of the All- State guards. Tom Reinhart who tips the scale at 188 pounds was chosen for one of the two All- State tackles. Three other Sheridan players were also given honorahle mention in the All-State se- lections, they were fullback, Walter Grey, end, Don Madia, and center, Joe Stohrer. Muddy fields, cold hands, and a wet ball were all hin- drances to the Broncs but they were always in the fight with a do or die spirit.
