'Zfottte tde Vianet The newest and most popular building on our campus is the home of the BRONCS. It houses the many trophies our BRONCS have worked for and earned through their sportsmanship and ability. The physical education classes are in session here every day of the week and several dances are held during the year for the students and faculty. We are all proud of our gymnasium and enjoy using it. Woodworking, Vocational Agriculture, Mechanical Drawing, and Metal Shop are among the courses of Industrial Arts held in this building. The building is equipped with modern devices sufficient for training the boys to meet the present demands of America. HIGH SCHOOL GYMNASIUM MR. CARL P. SCHWARTZ Superintendent of Buildings Mr. Frank Casey Mr. Elmer Miller Mrs. Elmer Miller Mr. Tom Morrison Upon these people depend the upkeep of our school plan. 9 Ttfron TReat t6e ‘PCtut I Superintendent, KARL D. BELL To the Students of Sheridan High School One of the major problems facing young people today arises from the fact that knowledge has multiplied far faster than we have increased our ability to absorb it. A true education is more than intellectual taxidermy, a scooping out of the mind and the stuffing in of facts. The human mind is not a deep-freeze for storage, but a forge for production; it must be supplied with fuel, fired and properly shaped. Young people of today must have a sure grasp of their intellectual heritage. You were not born as orphans in an intellectual wilderness, bereft of all ancestors. You have inherited a tremendous legacy from the past. There is a wonderful treasure of thought, knowledge and understanding that has been accumulated for you over the centuries. It is our hope that we have opened the doors of this heritage to you at Sheridan High School. Whether you enter or not, or what you gain depends upon your own efforts. SCHOOL BOARD R. B. Kelso W. E. Cook J. R. Hylton C. 11. Carroll Laura C. Pelesky W. J. Christensen Karl D. Bell 10 '$olccie4 S6 UcC z t Sc ooC Your one main purpose for attending Sheridan High School has been to acquire certain facts and quantities of information. To be able to gather facts and see clearly their relation to each other—to be able to establish relations of cause and effect by proof: these are the first and rarest fruits of education, and the surest evidence of straight thinking. Week after week, year after year, the person whose sympathies are broad and whose opinions are based on a ground-work of dependable information, will carry quite handsomely the burden of good citizenship. It is our sincerest wish that each one of you who have been a vital part of this school, community and nation carry far and wisely the principles of good citizenship and straight thinking to which you have been exposed here at Sheridan High School. The members in this organization run the projectors in assemblies. They also have charge of the sound system. In the mornings they receive their instructions from their sponsor. There used to be as many girls as there were boys, but there have been no girl V.E.S. members for several years. The organization is sponsored by Mr. Cloyd. Members are chosen by a student-faculty vote at elections held every spring and fall. Fall elections are open only to seniors, while spring elections include members of the out-going junior class as well as members of the senior class. Only the upper one-third of the two classes are eligible and from that group a certain per cent of each class is elected. The National Honor Society decorates the school Christmas tree every year, and sponsors the Valentine sale. Miss Elsie Norelius is the club sponsor. After one hundred years, the little sleepy town of Brigadoon awakens as Sheridan High Music students dance and sing to the music of Frederick Loewe with lyrics and story by Alan Lerner. The operetta is built around the adventures of two American hunters who, having lost their way in a Scotland forest, came upon the town called “Brigadoon,” which was not on the map. Brigadoon was “put to sleep” when the town minister, fearing that his people were becoming too worldly, prayed that the town and its inhabitants would disappear from the earth and relive only one day each century. During the past year the odors of chemical substances coming from the science rfooms indicated the students were acquiring knowledge of natural and physical sciences. Mr. Major instructs General Science in 304 for the beginning students. From 306 come the natural sciences of Biology I, and for the first time Biology II, under the instruction of Mr. Tait. In 314, amateur chemists and physicists are taught by Mr. Lodge. Science CecuU, t£e eucuf Below: In physics the students are taught the principles of bodies of motion and energy. This class is sometimes shocking. Below: In Biology 1, the students are acquainted with the basic knowledge of natural science. Dissecting a worm is pictured here. This year a Biology 11 class was held. This course was a select group and went into the advanced fields of Biology. For six weeks students had projects and at the end of this time they were required to write term papers on their projects. These papers were given orally to the class. The study of roots, definitions, and uses of words were devoted to a six weeks’ period. In chemistry students learn about the being of things and their composition. They carry on experiments under the instruction of Mr. Lodge. Left: These students are carrying on an experiment on colloids. They are left to right: Ada King, Victoria Pratt, and Mary Morrison. - In General Science the beginning students are informed on the every day things of the science field. They are taught the use of and care of lab equipment. They learn, how to forecast weather, how our homes are heated, how the life cycle is carried on, and many other scientific things that happen every day. Right: Here two students are making a barometer for the study of air pressure and the changes in weather and their relationship. The students are Irene Tetschner and Estella Newlon. Right: Even though the advanced students studied the animals more completely this does not make them any more or less slimy. Virginia Booth can not make a friendship with the frogs or salamanders in the case. 97 - e K ycnacy fault m owicte; t ene one clean,, concede Canyuaye i vital ta a face ovonlct. We live in America and the English language is our heritage. The study of the language we speak should bring to any high school student an appreciation of the beauty of the English language, a knowledge of the correct use of words, and the desire to develop the ability to express his thoughts clearly and forcibly. English should help a student in preparing his other lessons, to secure a good position after graduation, and make him feel at ease with any of his social contacts. The study of Latin has the following objectives—to increase ability in the use of English by practice in translation; to develop an historical and cultural background of the Roman people; to develop mental habits of accuracy, thoroughness, and logical thinking. Spanish gives one a personal satisfaction of being able to speak and read another language. Its knowledge contributes to international neighborliness by bringing an understanding of the customs and ideals of the Latin Americas and Spain and by interpreting them to others.
