Throughout our history we have sought constantly to increase our knowledge, strengthen our character and improve our- selves. ln common with other free nations of the world, we do not rely solely on our mili- tary might. Our great strength lies in our Y! people and their participation in spiritual, educational and industrial progress. It is our hope that we have, during your four years at S.H.S., offered you the oppor- tunity to prepare yourself to assume these responsibilities as a citizen in a free land. Best wishes, y Superintendent 6-if J. R. HYLTON, Chairman D. C. DIERS, Treasurer LAURA C, PELESKY, Clerk R. B. KELSO W. J. CHRISTENSEN W. E. COOK i.. aggsziclan Scgoof Alliczlcfan, q'Vyomin9 The opportunities for educational and cultural advance- ment are nowhere else so widely distributed as in this country. But even here there are millions upon whom fortune does not smile. There are boys and girls against whom the doors of advancement appear to be closed. The opportuni- ties of life are by no means equal. And herein lies the means by which the students of Sheridan High School may prove their gratitude for the educational opportunities made available through the foresight of the citizens of this community. The period of our lives that we spend in school provides us with the greatest opportunity that we will ever have to prepare ourselves so that we may solve problems of every nature. It may, and does, help us to take care of ourselves in the economic world. lt may enable us to make more money. But the greatest gift of education is that enlargement and refinement of the personality which makes it possible for us to produce melody rather than discord when we touch the keyboard of life's experiences. This year nine girls were chosen to represent Sheridan County at the sessions in Laramie from the 14th of June to the 20th. These girls were chosen on the basis of their qualifications of character, leadership, and scholarship. The objective of Girls' State is to inform the girls of their duties, privileges, rights, and responsibilities as American citizens to prepare them to take their place in the functioning of their government. Sponsoring organizations of the Sheridan County delegates were as follows: P.E.0., Beta Sigma Phi, B.P.W., Eagles Auxiliary, A.A.U.W., Sheridan Junior Woman's Club, Senior Woman's Club, Big Horn Womanis Club, Big Horn Homemalcers Club, Clearmont Woman's Club, and Clearmont Menis Club. 5v1!'l:5, Avg- V19 5 A 4 'N ' n U-S ' 0 5 4, Fbpcii 5 ffiem 'Q Q Q 'I1E?:i9w5 ll Qfel 5 Av,NV rr Lrg A S A fEG-1099 I s Bob Rojsto n, L ,vie Ro1S,0n C 1113, Ch risty . 5,6 p11e,, Ro 361-S , He nry Stevens B , oykin S511 ers. Boys ' State The American Legion sent six Sheridan boys to the sixth annual Boys' State held from May 31 to June 5 at Centennial, Wyoming. Roy Powers of Ranchester and Lyle Rolston of Big Horn went with the Sheridan group. Roy Powers of Ranchester and lohn Donnelly of Sheridan are absent in the picture above. The aim of Boys, State is to teach boys more about the operation of our state govern- ment. The boys were divided into two parties, Frontier and Pioneer, where they held primary and general elections. Sheridan was very fortunate that John Donnelly was elected 'Governor of Boys' State, and Gary Christy was elected U. S. Senator. This was a great honor, as they were chosen from more than 150 boys. The boys were helped in their work by noted attorneys from Laramie and from several state senators. 49 Fifth row: Fox, Sheldon, Marosok, Meyer, Haynes, Nystrom, Vuylsteke, Gibson, McClintock, Elder, Sump, Wagner, Coutis. The study of the English language should bring to any student an appreciation of the beauty of our language as well as a knowledge of the correct use of the words. English will help the student throughout his life with the development of the ability to express his thoughts clearly and forcibly. The study of Latin principally is devoted to increasing the student's vocabulary. In addition, it helps build an understanding and appreciation of the Roman peoples. Through the study of Spanish, one learns to speak a language of many of the peoples around him. 'It helps create a sympathetic attitude and tolerance toward the building of a better relationship between nations.
