THE HONOR AND RESPONSIBILITY It it a great honor to be designated as first chair. I do not mean first chair in first or solo parts section only but first chair in every section. There must be first chair in second, third and fourth parts as well, which in many cases are more important than first chair on fiist or solo part. Ihrv must have sufficient understanding of tone qualities, balance, phrasing, shading and value of notes. I hev should possess all fundamental principles of music, imtiuments, and the above, but also have such interest in music and the organization that practicing on such parts will not be burdensome. First chair on first part should be advanced on tone production and should understand interpretation of solo parts, cadenzas, etc. Above all, every first chair in all sections must have their parts prepared in such a manner so they will be good examples to the balance of that particular section. Another very essential duty is to be prompt, never to be late for any occasion. The duties of first chair are to assist in every way their co workers in preparing parts, and they even should know the different fingering and be able to explain the advantages of such. They should aLso see that the instruments are held in a somewhat similar position, that the body pose is uniform, and when in public that the uniforms are clean, neat, and that all accessories arc in order including clean instruments. All first chairs are the chief representatives of the organization. They must live and act as such that the community and the outer world will look to them, not only as the first chair of the musical organization, but as first chair in citizenship of this good U. S. A. My admiration and salutation to every first chair performer who is willing to comply with the stated responsibilities you will certainly be a great aid and comfort to your director. Boh Makovsky Director and Head, Department of Music Boh Makovsky, director and head of the Music Department and director of the Symphonic Band of the Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College, Stillwater, Oklahoma was born in Frantisky. Bohemia, sixty-one years ago. Both parents had died by the time he was twelve years of age. Most of his early years were spent in doing farm work and studying the clarinet with his uncle. At the age of seventeen Boh, as he is called by all of his friends, came to the United States through the help of his sister who was living in Clarkson, Nebraska. It wasn’t long until Boh was playing in a small musical organization. His experience in road shows was extremely varied. In 1903 Boh came to Oklahoma with his traveling band to play in the Territory of Oklahoma. Very soon he had located himself in Oklahoma Gty where he directed bands, played in theatres and hotels, and taught the band initruments. In 1915 Mr. Makovsky was called to the A. and M. College to be the head of the Music Depaitment and director of the college band. Boh has developed his music department until at the precent time it boasts a faculty of fifteen members and a departmental enrollment of 130 music majors. The department is a member of the National Association of Schools of Music. On December 7. 1939. a celebration was held on the observance of his twenty-fifth year at the A. and M. College. Wm. R. Wehrend Director University of Oklahoma Hand, Pi or man, Oklahoma The most ideal form of recognition of leadership is through outstanding meiit and ability. With these and a willingness to cooperate and help in the section and organization, an individual may rightfully deserve the position of first chair. In this position, all members of the section are dependent on the first chair for entrance, stability, confidence, style of playing, and relating the pan to the other sections of the ensemble. One must be an individual with personality, leaderrhip, and a willingness to help others. One who has developed the above qualities is deserving of the position of first chair, and I feel sure this type of an individual will make a jplendid citizen in our democracy.
