BAND High School Band CARO, MICHIGAN Harry L. Wood. Director One of the best equipped hands in Eastern Michigan. Also one of the finest playing bands. Was selected to attend the famous Holland, Michigan, Tulip Festival. Mr. Wood graduated from Fairmont State Teachers College, Fairmont, West Virginia. Taught there one and one-half summer terms after graduation. Teacher of Reeds West Virginia Pioneer Music Camp,” 1935. Taught and organized the “Viking Band of Petersburg High School, Grant County, West Virginia. Holds Masters Degree in Music from University of Michigan, 1940 Summer Term. Has been director of the Caro High School Band two years. Author of several articles and pamphlets on bands and orchestras. Haywood High School Band BROWNSVII.LE, TENNE3SEE R. Roy Coates, Director Brownsville has developed a 50-piece high school band in the school band and 25 beginners. State Contest Raring: “Superior four years Mr. Coates has been instructor, also a 40-piece grade —Marching and Concert—1939. High School Band COLUMBIA CITY, INDIANA Lawrence Johnston, Director Organized in 1923. Claims to be the second school band in Indiana. Entered competition in 1932 winning third place in (Mass B; 1933 first place in marching; 1934 started a five-year winning streak. National Marching Championship, 1936. The only Class B band to rate “Superior” in both playing and marching in 1938, Region 3 Contest. Has completely modern music building. “Larry Johnston’s one big hobby is marching bands. Thomas Jefferson High School Band ELIZABETH, NEW JERSEY Arthur H. Brandenburg, Director In 1924 there was only one high school band in Elizabeth, an enrollment of 1,000 students. This band won first division New Jersey. 'File first to be organized was a pep band of honors in National Competition, 1939. nine players. Instrumental music in the schools has grown to Beaver Dam High School Band BEAVER DAM, WISCONSIN J. W. Myers, Conductor The Beaver Dam High School Band was organized in 1920. with a membership of fifteen players. By 1930 it had grown to forty members.
