DIRECTORS First Row William II. Gould.........................Grand Junction, Colorado Started at Grand Junction. 1932. Ha built a fine band and orchestra with enviable records made by each of these organizations. II. W. Dodd....................................Dickinson, North Dakota Organized band at Dickinson two years ago. Has built up a fine concert and marching organization that rates well with the finest bands in the state. Captain A. T. Henson......................................Logan, Utah Director of band and orchestra. Grandson of the famous English bandmaster. Edward Hopewell of the King's Royal Rifles. Studied under Doctor Daniel Prothers; at the age of twenty-two. he organized the first school band and orchestra in Western Canada; was for a number of years conductor of the Alberta Philharmonic Symphony Oichestra; obtained Bachelor of Music degree from the Royal Academy of Music in London. Located at Logan. Utah. 1929. The story of his woik there is told in the story of his organizations. Edith M. Hanson.......................................Hudson, Wisconsin Music supervisor Hudson school twelve years. Has developed fine mixed chorus. Also outstanding soloists; giaduate of St. Olaf College. Studied Universities of Minnesota. Washington, and Wisconsin; Christiansen Choral School. Paul E. Carlson...........................Brownsville, Pennsylvania Director of the fine Brownsville High School Band. Second Row Mrs. Marcaret Rawson Goheen . . . Tacoma, Washington B.A. and M.A., Washington College. Special work at Columbia and Northwestern Universities; Qioral schools of Dr. Christianson and Father Finn and University of Washington. Took charge of A Capclla Choir, Lincoln High School, Tacoma Washington. 1935. Has remarkable record of achievement. A. II. Schleunes.................................Mansfield, Wisconsin Directs the fine band at Marshfield; thirty two out of thirty-five solos and ensembles rated superior, 1939 State Contest. A record showing fine teaching. B. E. degree Oshkorh State Teachers College; studied at University of Wisconsin, Northwestern University, Lawrence College, Vandercook School of Music. Simon Kooyman.....................................Clarksdale, Mississippi Of native Dutch parentage; born in Holland. 1882; educated in Holland, studied music at Beverwyk School of Music and at Haarlem. Became director of band and orchestra at Wykanzee, beach resort. In 1908. went to city of Medan. Netherland East Indies, to direct city orchestra; on account of World War, came to United States in 1915. Since has been director of several city bands in different sections of the country; came to Clarksdale, 1926. Has enviable record in band and orchestra field; member of American Bandmasters Association; vice chairman. Region 7; has received recognition as composer and teacher. Has host of friends in Mid-South. Miss Peari. Jacobson..................................Eureka, California Has done outstanding choral work at Eureka. California. Has outstanding contest record. Miss Chlor Lufkin.........................Water Valley, Mississippi Miss Lufkin went to Water Valley six years ago and organized the band which now has fifty-four members. Miss Lufkin is regarded as one of Mississippi’s outstanding conductors, which is attested by the record of the fine Water Valley High School Band. Third Row W. II. Greenwood.....................................Lebanon, Tennessee Serving his first year at Lebanon; has built the band from twenty eight to fifty piece . Elmo Low..................................................Laredo, Texas Graduate of San Marcos Baptist Academy. B.A. with band. Hardin Simmons University; member of famous Cowboy Band, assistant director. I930-’31. Solo chair clarinet for three years; voted most valuable member, 1927,’31. Graduate study Sul Ross State Teachers College. Texas Technological College. Vale II. Ellis....................................Montgomery, Alabama Bachelor of Music from Dana Musical Institute; Bachelor of Science in Education, from Kent University; Master’s degree in Education from Howard College; director of bands Woodlawn High School, Birmingham. Alabama. 1927-’38; first trombone with Birmingham Civic Symphony six seasons; instructor of trombone and baritone at Birmingham Conservatory of Music. 1V36-'38; director of bands at Sidney Lanier High School. Montgomery, Alabama. 1938-’40; director of Alcazar Temple Shrine Band. Montgomery. Ala bama; president of Alabama Music Festival Association, I939’40. C. A. Wallick........................................Jackson, Tennessee Commercial course, Webster Reserve Academy, Hudson. Ohio, also Case School, Cleveland, Ohio. Taught school in Missouri and Indian Territory with band as a side line; attended college at Pea Ridge, Arkansas, and organized a college band there; worked for Rock Island. Railroad at Hartshorn, Oklahoma, and organized various bands. Has organized and taught numerous bands and orchestras in Arkansas and Mississippi where he has been most successful in his work. Started in Jackson. Tennessee. 1937, and has built a fine organiza tion. C. E. Cl.AUSSEN.........................................Holstein, Iowa Director of band, Holstein, Iowa. Educated in Germany. Studied in a mill tary school; traveled with an orchestra thioughout the Danube country. Fourth Row Walter C. Minniear....................................Monroe, Louisiana Ouachita Parish High School. Organized band, 1936; has built it to seventy five members with an enviable record. C. W. Martin...............................North Little Rock, Arkansas Junior High School. Starting with his own family of eight boys and three girls, Mr. Martin dc vcloped the famous “Martin Family Band at Quitman, Arkansas, some twenty-five years ago. A lover of band music, he began teaching it to his children in their infancy. Has taught bands throughout Arkansas. Started school bands in the North Little Rock schools. Now teaches the Junior High Band. Robert Scriver...................................Browning, Montana Has been at Browning five years; has produced unique “Blackfoot Indian Band. Has outstanding record in contests. J. E. King, Jr..........................................Caldwell, Texas Started music under his father, who is a bandmaster; took charge of junior college band at age sixteen; attended S. M. U. Was first chair cornet for two years, earning the first band scholarship ever offered at that school. Attended T. C. U. and won scholarship in band; bandmaster at Daniel Baker College two years; taught at Sanderson, Texas, at Caldwell four years; has studied at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, H. A. Vandercook. Chicago. Hobbies: chess and tennis. W. Ronzik Francis............................Grantvillc, West Virginia Calhoun County High School. Has developed a sixty four piece band with a fine record. Fifth Row Andrew Mikita........................................Effingham, Illinois Has developed an outstanding band. Teaches fine citizenship to students through community service.
