' 2-955' RFMINISC I Xf FS OI IHI BIG HORN TYPI DIIIOX UI 1810 The Blg Holn exped1t1on of the summer of 1876 was commanded by General George Crook 1n person It was one of thlee columns of tloops sent out to quell the S1 .xx upr1s1ng Old Fort Fettelman on the North Platte RIVQF was the pomt of departure from the Yellow stone and 1tS sev Q1 al t11butar1es The command comprxsed flfteen troops of Unlted States cavalrv and ten co1npan1es of lnfantry A tram of sxx mule army wagons numbeung one hundred and SIX con Xe ed our supphes and ammun1t1on There was besldes a pack mule tram employed by scoutlng partles I accompanled th1s expedltlon and lepre sented the ChlC3gO Inter Ocean newspaper Thls was my th11d exped1t1on to the then Northwestern front1er Our route led us along the Bo7eman Tra1l from Fort Fetterman to the abandoned posts of Fort Reno and Fort Ph1l Kearney Our f1rst and most lmportant camp was at the confluence of the two mam branches of Goose Creek where the clty of Sher1dan now stands We arr1ved at th1s place on June 10 Over on the Tongue R1ver we had had a brush w1th a Zhong band of SIOUX sent out bv Crazy Horse the m1l1ta1y genlus of the ost1les The day we pltched our tents on the banks of the Goose Creek was one of those dlamond days for whlch the eastern 11m of the B1g Horn range IS noted A sharp raln had struck us eaxlv IH the folenoon but as we wound along the Goose the sun came out and summel seemed born 1n an hou1 Our camp was flnely chosen It had the three pr1me requ1s1tes a plentlful supply of clear cool water an abundance of r1ch grass fo1 our 3Il1II'13.l9 and wood sufflclent for all ou1 needs The Goose at thls polnt was about twenty f1ve vards w1de and several feet deep The news of the B1g Holn M0uHt3lHS were magn1f1cent Cloud Peak snow hooded and towermg reflected mvuads of colols IU the attelnoon sun Between lt and our camp the vast dark forests st1 etched full as we latel. d1sc0w ered of many klnds of game The dax we made camp half a dozen buffaloes had been shot and our S9291 al messes w exe w ell stocked w1th fresh meat The Goose was ahve w1th flsh Hx if s ,f 'J' Q Message?
