FOREIGN LANGUAGE Mr. Curtis Roesch, graduate of Fort Hays College, taught German I this year. This is the first year German has been offered at S. C.H.S. German I was taught in two hours. Twenty-five students were enrolled in German I. Mr. James Stegman, graduate of Fort Hays, was the Spanish instruc- tor at S.C.H.S. this year. There were ten students enrolled in Spanish I. Five students were enrolled in Spanish II. The new language laboratory has 15 booths. Each student was assigned a booth, in which he could record, listen, take oral tests, or converse with the instructor over individual problems. 14

COMMERCE Mrs. Maxine Shaw was the com- merce teacher this year. Subjects taught in the field of commerce were Typing I, Typing II, and Bookkeeping. There were 50 students enrolled in Typing I. This class consists of learning the keyboard; touch typing, and two, three, and five minute timed writings. The assignments were learning various types of manuscripts, learning the different kinds of letter styles, setting up tables, and typing invoices and telegrams. Typing II is a continuation of Typing I. Twenty-two students took this course. This class brings in learning more elaborate letter styles and other typing jobs. The class also had an Office Practice Set, which consisted of various kinds of office jobs. The students also learned the method of filing. Twenty-six students took Book- keeping. The Bookkeeping course is about learning the basic funda- mentals of keeping office and business books. The class completed one set of keeping books at a grocery store. 13

Mr. Ames teaching English 11 ENGLISH Students at S.C.H.S. are offered four years of English. Three years are required. Mr. Ames teaches English I and II. Mr. Roesch teaches English III and IV. Mr. Stegman teaches English I. Two hours of English I, II, and III are available to students and one hour of English IV is offered to senior students interested in college preparatory work. This year, the English II classes made a special study of the book, To Kill a Mocking- bird by Harper Lee and the English IV class of Buddenbrooks by Thomas Mann. 15 Mr. Roesch
