GUIDANCE COUNSELLING Mr. Mcllvain helps student pre-enroll The chief duties of the counselor is to assist students and their parents privately. The purpose is to help a stu- dent know and understand himself, to accept himself, and to initiate action, to make satisfactory choices, and to become self-directing. Guidance is an educational process in which assistance is given to students to make choices and adjustment in significant situations in their lives in which they need help. Guidance Counselor and student are looking through a job training and information file. 12

MA THEMA TICS Mr. O'Brien explains trigonometry terms to Algebra II students. Students at SCHS have the opportunity to enroll in several courses in the Mathemat- ics field. Algebra I, Algebra II, Trigonom- etry, Geometry, and Basic Mathematics. Mr. O’Brien, head Mathematics Instruc- tor, teaches two sections of Algebra I, Algebra II, Trigonometry, and Geometry. Mr. Wedel, Science instructor, teaches Basic Mathematics. 11

COMMERCE Mrs. Maxine Shaw was the com- merce teacher this year. Subjects taught in the field of commerce were Typing I, Typing II, and Bookkeeping. There were 50 students enrolled in Typing I. This class consists of learning the keyboard; touch typing, and two, three, and five minute timed writings. The assignments were learning various types of manuscripts, learning the different kinds of letter styles, setting up tables, and typing invoices and telegrams. Typing II is a continuation of Typing I. Twenty-two students took this course. This class brings in learning more elaborate letter styles and other typing jobs. The class also had an Office Practice Set, which consisted of various kinds of office jobs. The students also learned the method of filing. Twenty-six students took Book- keeping. The Bookkeeping course is about learning the basic funda- mentals of keeping office and business books. The class completed one set of keeping books at a grocery store. 13
