The staff cooperation was ex- cellent, their criti- cism constructive, and their programs well organized. Mr. Mcllvain, Mr. Haines, and Mr. Ames will be leaving at the end of this term but I am extremely pleased and gratified that the rest of the faculty will return for another academic year. Richard H. Science 1961 JAMES STEGMAN Faculty Room ROBERT WEDEL DEPA R TMENTS SCIENCE The Science Department has had a very interesting year with 77 students enrolled in the var- ious classes. The Science courses offered this year were Chemistry, Phys- ics, and 2 sections of Zoology. Mr. Wedel working in the laboratory. Zoology class discusses the internal organs of the body. 10 MA THEMA TICS Mr. O'Brien explains trigonometry terms to Algebra II students. Students at SCHS have the opportunity to enroll in several courses in the Mathemat- ics field. Algebra I, Algebra II, Trigonom- etry, Geometry, and Basic Mathematics. Mr. O’Brien, head Mathematics Instruc- tor, teaches two sections of Algebra I, Algebra II, Trigonometry, and Geometry. Mr. Wedel, Science instructor, teaches Basic Mathematics. 11 GUIDANCE COUNSELLING Mr. Mcllvain helps student pre-enroll The chief duties of the counselor is to assist students and their parents privately. The purpose is to help a stu- dent know and understand himself, to accept himself, and to initiate action, to make satisfactory choices, and to become self-directing. Guidance is an educational process in which assistance is given to students to make choices and adjustment in significant situations in their lives in which they need help. Guidance Counselor and student are looking through a job training and information file. 12 COMMERCE Mrs. Maxine Shaw was the com- merce teacher this year. Subjects taught in the field of commerce were Typing I, Typing II, and Bookkeeping. There were 50 students enrolled in Typing I. This class consists of learning the keyboard; touch typing, and two, three, and five minute timed writings. The assignments were learning various types of manuscripts, learning the different kinds of letter styles, setting up tables, and typing invoices and telegrams. Typing II is a continuation of Typing I. Twenty-two students took this course. This class brings in learning more elaborate letter styles and other typing jobs. The class also had an Office Practice Set, which consisted of various kinds of office jobs. The students also learned the method of filing. Twenty-six students took Book- keeping. The Bookkeeping course is about learning the basic funda- mentals of keeping office and business books. The class completed one set of keeping books at a grocery store. 13 FOREIGN LANGUAGE Mr. Curtis Roesch, graduate of Fort Hays College, taught German I this year. This is the first year German has been offered at S. C.H.S. German I was taught in two hours. Twenty-five students were enrolled in German I. Mr. James Stegman, graduate of Fort Hays, was the Spanish instruc- tor at S.C.H.S. this year. There were ten students enrolled in Spanish I. Five students were enrolled in Spanish II. The new language laboratory has 15 booths. Each student was assigned a booth, in which he could record, listen, take oral tests, or converse with the instructor over individual problems. 14 Mr. Ames teaching English 11 ENGLISH Students at S.C.H.S. are offered four years of English. Three years are required. Mr. Ames teaches English I and II. Mr. Roesch teaches English III and IV. Mr. Stegman teaches English I. Two hours of English I, II, and III are available to students and one hour of English IV is offered to senior students interested in college preparatory work. This year, the English II classes made a special study of the book, To Kill a Mocking- bird by Harper Lee and the English IV class of Buddenbrooks by Thomas Mann. 15 Mr. Roesch Mrs. Deane HOME ECONOMICS The Home Economics department had 29 enrolled in Home Ec. 1 and 28 enrolled In’ Home Ec. II and 5 enrolled in Home Ec. HI. There was two classes of Home Ec. I and of Home Ec. H. These classes studied various fields such as Home Management, Child Development, and Designing. The Home Ec. II classes exchanged classes for one week with the Vocational Agriculture and learned what the various aspects of Vocational Agriculture are. The Home Eco- nomics III class planned the remodeling of teachers apartments for the coming year. 16 Mrs. Deane discusses problems of Home Management. VOCA TIONAL A GRICULTURE There were 18 members in freshman vocational agriculture, 9 in the sophomore class, and 6 members in the junior class. The freshman class study centered mostly around farm mechanics. Livestock and judging was the class study of the sopho- more class. Crop production was one of main topics studied in the Junior class. Vo. ag. class learns technic of acetylene welding. Gary Reitcheck and Max Kennedy receive awards for outstanding judging. 17 SOCIAL SCIENCE Mr. Victor Oelke taught American Government and geography in the field of So- cial Science. American Gov- ernment is required to be taken by all juniors in order to graduate. Geography is an elective course which any student may take. Mr. Oelke Mr. Don Bigham taught Amer- ican History. This a required course taken by all Seniors in order to graduate. SPONSORED BY Mr. Bigham 18 THE FIRST NATIONAL BANK ART Ten students at S.C.H.S. took art this year. This is the first year it has been offered, and was taught by Mr. Eldon Ames. The students who took art were: Marilyn Treu, Linda Selbe, Mary Lovin, Bob Fromme, Ralph Carl- ton, Rynard Rodgers, Jack Rowli- son, Lavem Bieker, Richard Deane, and Rex Storer. In March, six students and Mr. Ames went to Linsburg to visit the Sandzen Memorial Gallary. Through-out the year, pictures by the art students have been in the Student Room. The Art class has helped make scenery for the Junior Play and All School Play, made scenery for the stage at Homecom- ing, and helped the Juniors with the scenery for the Jr. Sr. Prom. This year the students studied appreciation in history of masters in the art field, sculpturing, water coloring, chalk, pencil, and figure drawing. Several times throughout the year the students went out doors to do sketching. In November, the art class moved into the new Music and Art Depart- ment. Bob Fromme received the art award this year. SPEECH DRAMA DEBATE SQUAD, BACK ROW: Jon Getz, Richard D., Lance F., John N. .FRONT ROW: Linda S., Nancy S. The Speech and Drama departments had a very successful year this year. They entered Debate and Speech contests in several schools throughout the state. The Drama Department sponsored two plays, The Ugly American , and Blithe Spirit . Lance F. and JoAnn F., State Speech and Drama Festival Contestants. SPONSORED BY NEAL PLUMBING Mr. A1 Anderson, Instructor INDUSTRIAL ARTS Industrial Arts consists of Me- chanical Drawing I and II and Wood- working I and II. The Mechanical Drawing I class start out the year by learning let- tering, they study orthographic projection, do dimensioning, work on sections, and drawings. Each student is required to turn in 56 plates before the year is finished. The second year Mechanical Drawing class review what has been learned during their first year class. They start working with auxilary views and revolutions, and do sheet metal drafting. During the second semester, the class start on archi- tectural drafting. Each student chooses and designs his own home. In doing this, the student learns and uses: floor plans, roof plans, plot plans, wall sections, front, rear, right, and left elevations, kitchen build-ins, specification sheets, wiring plans, and door and paint schedules. This year's class took field trips to see homes in construction. The students in Woodworking I were required to do a project using all hand tools. Later, each student learns to use machines. Coffee tables, gun racks, lamps, and end tables are some of the most com- mon pieces made. The second year Woodworking class learn safety on machines. Each student keeps a notebook of different operations, and con- structs more difficult projects. They study finishing and work on a lathe. A China closet and book- case headboard were two of the more difficult items made this year. The band made great progress under the new direction of Mr. Jerry Haines, a graduate of Bethany College, this year. The marching band, with 48 members performed during the half-time of the football games with their precision marching. They marched in Homecoming and Maize Day parades at Hoxie. The concert band presented a winter concert, and a spring concert in conjunction with the Vocal Music Department. The band received a II rating at District Music Festival playing Meditation from Thias' and Sea-Dragon by Maurice Whitney. Gordon Warren, first horn, received I ratings at both District and State Music Festivals. Marilyn Treu received a III rating on her piano solo at District Music Festival. Drum MajoreU.. The decorations were ice, blue, turquoise, and white streamers accented with colorful balloons. The punch table, covered with a white linen cloth, was centered with a Christmas poinsetta, evergreen, and two white candles. Small sno-ball decorated cakes and sherbert punch were served. Mr. Kenny Krannawitter, Student Council President, presided over the coronation of Miss Georgia Currier, the Annual Sno-Ball Queen. On October 5 the faculty members and the football squad joined in a mock game for the Homecoming Pep Assembly skit in the gym. The cheerleaders served as the officials for the game. The Homecoming game was played on the Hoxie Gridiron against the St. Francis Indians. The game was played on the after- noon of October 6. The Hoxie Indians were de- feated 33-7.
