Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1965 volume:

The man to whom we have dedicated this annual has acted not only as instructor and adviser, but as counselor and friend. His warmth and humor have made the study of History enjoyable as well as informative, providing us with insight we might not otherwise have enjoyed. We owe many of our athletic victories to his ability as a coach. His enthusiasm has never waned, regardless of whether his was the winning or losing team. It is because of this spirit that we owe so much to him; and, although we realize that the dedication of a year- book is a small expression of our gratitude we, the class of 1965, wish to dedicate our Monarch to you. How far could we progress, unguided By its sparkling golden beams? The road is long that we have traveled Since the fall of '53, And still the path winds on before us, Holding truths we cannot see. Led by tireless instructors Every step along the way, We find at last an understanding; Wisdom in the light of day. THE QUEEN AND HER COURT The Marauder eleven completed an undefeated but rather unusual season in 1964 as they won four, lost none, and tied four, for a tie in the Center State Conference, Over a two year period the Sherburne gridders have dropped only one game in fifteen but have yet to gain the championship. The Marauders were, without doubt, the top defensive team as they shut out six of eight opponents and yielded only two touchdowns, both of which came through the air. None scored from the ground. The Maroons were hit hard by graduation so the Class of '65 played a big role in anchor- ing the unbeaten eleven. Co-Captains Tony Abbott and Dave Lasher will leave some big gaps in the line as will Ron Cleveland, Jim Dubuar, and Gary Walker. Jeff Brillinger and Rick Morey will go from the backfield. Annual Trophies Outstanding lineman - Tony Abbott Most improved lineman - Dick Bensley Outstanding back - Dennis Frink Most improved back - Rick Morey Varsity Basketball The Maroon Marauders started off with a bang as they nailed down victories over Clinton and Hamilton, away from home. Tnen the offense faltered and at press time, the Marauders found themselves with a 8-9 record. With three Center State Conference games left, the Maroon cagers had a good chance of finishing above the . 500 mark. Ken Van Wagner, Bruce Eccleston, and one reserve, Rick Morey, were all that remained of last year's championship squad. Eight juniors rounded out the squad. Two of these juniors, Jerry Acee and Jerry Horton, found starting positions. The bright spot of the season was co-captain Ken Van Wagner's shooting which in 15 games had produced 326 points for a 21.7 game average. At this pace Van Wagner stood a chance of amassing 400 points and a new one season school scoring record. Sherburne's second high scorer was the other co-captain, Bruce Eccleston, with a 12.4 average for 186 points in the 15 games played. Re quired by necessity to involve themselves in daily combat with men and beast for survival, these stone age men gradually perfected their means of fighting. Indeed, with the dawn of civilization in 3, 000 B. C., it was considered a manly art. Sculptured scenes on the walls of the temple of Ben Hasan near the Nile, which depict nearly all of the holds and fall combinations known to the present, confirming the importance of wrestling to the early civilizations. With the coming of the Greek Empire, wrestling as an athletic function wa never surpassed in importance by other sports. In Great Britain, wrestling matured at an early age; the evidence for which lies in the meeting of the Cloth of Gold in 1520 when Henry the Eighth and Francis the First dueled. Today, wrestling is the fastest grow- ing sport in America. - Long associated with out Alma Mater, Sherburne was one of the pioneer schools of New York State to adopt this sport on an organized basis. The success of this experiment has been fruitful, as a glance toward the trophy case will verify. Add to this the determination, self confidence and physical excellence which each grappler attains through this sport, and it is not hard to see why wrestling will continue to be an important corner stone in the education of our youth. Turning in sixteen wins and giving up only four games during the season, the Marauders compiled one of the finest records in baseball history at Sherburne. Considering the winning combination of fine pitching and powerful hitting, our tie for the Center-State League Title came as no sur- prise. Senior John Klockowski set a new batting average record with an outstanding . 486, while teammajes Jon Wales, Tony Abbott, and Ron Cleveland also gave scintil- lating performances. Ron Cleveland and Tom Acee, with records of 7-3 and 6-0 respectively, gave the Marauders their excellent defensive rating. In 1965, with all save four returning, it is safe to assume that Sherburne can look for- ward to another successful season on the diamond. In the 1964 season, the Cross Country team was plagued by near-wins and in- juries. Losing the first meet to Oneonta 27-30, dropping the next to sauquoit 31- 35, the team was finally nudged out of second place in the League Meet by the narrow margin of one point. Bright spots during the season included a 47-16 victory over Richfield Springs and 4th place at large Invitational runs at Chittenango and Cobleskill. Outstanding varsity men were Captain Jerry Horton and senior Karl Bagnall. With a strong nucleus returning, Coach Krum views the future with optimism. Hallelujah!! Varsity Capt. - K. Funnell J.V. Capt. - A. Benedict Mascot: R. Eccleston Cheerleading: Sherburne Style! The 1964 track season was highlighted by many individual per- formances. The 1965 team captain, Gary Walker, set a new school record for the discus of 129'8 . Lisle Britton shattered the old school record for the 880; Jerry Horton did the same for the two mile event. Dale Crumb broke his own mark in the triple jump. As a team, new records were set in the 440 and 1 mile relays. In addition, Jerry Acee captured second place in the 100 and 220 yard dash, at Section 3, Class C, Track and Field Championships. With graduation losses low, high hopes are held for the Sherburne thin-clads” in 1965.
