Dedication to Mr. Hill As a class of individuals, we have each entrusted a large portion of our future to the advice and wisdom of one man. Upon him we have relied for information concerning colleges, nec- essary tests, and vocations. Answering our questions from morn- ing ’til night, no matter how tired he may have been. He has never turned away a student. Yes, even as a child seeks guidance from his father, we, the Class of 1964, have constantly come to you, Mr. Hill, and now, although an inadequate reward, we would deem it an honor to present to you our yearbook, the Monarch, 1964. Mr. Hill Mr. Grieve The second dedication is to a man who has given of himself to all the youth of our community since the advent of his career in Sherburne. Through his unflagging efforts to obtain athletic scholarships for his players, his enthusiastic invocation of a summer youth program, he has touched the life of every Sher- burne student. From the deep well of our love and affection, we, the Class of 1964, therefore, dedicate our yearbook to you. 2 Table of Contents Faculty and Administration Seniors Classes Organizations Prom Athletics Ads Not in Sadness, but Remembrance Just a dim, shining light - For others to see to follow to hope. A warm, gentle flame. A dynamic, burning flame. A flame leaping high with joy and overflowing with love - for all. Just a dim, shining light - For others to see. Not snuffed out, But placed in the heavens as a star - A memorial unto herself, And unto us - a light. Richard Perkins L«t each become all he is capable of being”; is a phrase appearing on many documents of the New York State Department. We appreciate the efforts of the advisor and the students in the production of the 1964 yearbook. May this exper- ience have increased their capability of all the students who participated. 6 SUPERINTENDENT, Mr. Youmans VICE-PRINCIPAL, Mr. Webb BOARD OF FRONT ROW: Mr. Robert Benedict, Mr. Charles Webb, Mr. Joseph EDUCATION Cahill. We let his words stand as his own memorial. ‘ T call upon you to join us in a journey to the new frontier. The voyage is a long and hazardous one, but we are all partners in a great and historic journey.” Let us . . . begin to play our full part in the development of a world of peace and freedom - let us join the human race.” Now the trumpet summons us again - not as a call to bear arms, though arms we need - not as a call to battle, though embattled we are - but a call to bear the burden of a long twilight struggle, year in and year out, ‘rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation’ - a struggle against the common en- emies of man: tyranny, poverty, disease and war itself.” “Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country.” With a good conscience our own sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God’s work must truly be our own.” Our national purpose is not merely to survive but to prevail.” 12 Seniors 14 Pat Bonsie 15 Connie Canny Picture Not Available Rose Combes Larry Clark John Cook Ruth Ann Clark Judy Coye 17 John Cunningham 18 Mary Fradenburg Nancy Hodge 19 20 Sharon Lane Tom Lamer Pat Lloyd Bob Losee Bob Marano Picture Not Available Bill Marston 21 22 Nola Nelson 23 Dave O'Connor 24 Donna Philips 25 Diane Sanderson 26 AI Vanderlaan 27 Sue Van Wagner Sue Whitney 28 gLV.„ ADVISORS: MR. The squad was a blending of seniors and juniors with a sprinkling of sophomores and freshmen. The Marauders opened their season with five straight wins as they dumped West Winfield, Waterville, Rich- field Springs, Sauquoit and Hamilton in that order. At the end of their first five games the team proved to be the highest scoring combination in the area. The sixth game proved to be their downfall as a good Clinton team pulled the upset of the year by dumping the Marauders 19 to 7. The Maroon bounced back and won their finale in real close battle with their arch rivals from Cooperstown, 13 to 6. The class of '64 supplied the nucleus for this outstanding season as they filled five of the starting position. John Klockowski played both fullback and left half, leading the team in scoring with 65 points and proving to be well and away the leading ground gainer. Jon Wales turned in an outstanding season at quarterback as he guided the team on the field. Wales did an excellent job in the passing depart- ment where he completed the amazing average of 71 of his passes. End Tom Acee and tackle Don Frink proved to be the outstanding lineman both on offense and defense, as most of the Sherburne yard- age was picked up thru their blocking while they thwarted the ground attack of the opponents. Jim Schroer deserves considerable recognition as he had to overcome an injury plagued season but turned in outstanding performance in several games. 52 Coach Grieves Coach Smith Coach FitzPatrick 53 - eve. -well nave our . , . , . ..... . . .11 with Hamilton. h' ou' lnlury louchM and thay'v. andJf doln« p«d. he added. 1? There is no doubt that this games of long standi two tea i _ by Dave vi mmmm Varsity Basketball With all but one regular season game played at this writing, the 1963-64 Sherburne Central basketball team proudly sported a 16-1 record and bid fair to be remembered as one of the best in the school's his- tory. The well balanced cagers reeled off eleven straight victories before being edged by one point at Hamilton. Bouncing back, the Maroon added five more victories before this edition went to press and solidly nailed down the Center State Conference Championship. One regular season game with New York Mills and the Section III play-offs yet remained. Several records have thus far been set by the 1963-64 Marauders and others are in sight. Dave Taylor broke the one game scoring record with 38 points against Richfield Springs and the team set a new regular sea- son record with eleven straight victories. The eleven victories also tied a school record for consecutive vic- tories including play-offs and sectionals. Jon Wales was zeroing in on the all-time scoring record and needed only eleven points to surpass the 825 total previously set. Taylor also had a chance to break the one season scoring record of 390 points set in 1962--63 by Wales. They were undefeated in league competition and consequently won both the Center State and Central New York titles. Outstanding perform- ers for the team were Seniors: John Cunningham, Don Frink, Joe Gombers, and Bob Marano. These individuals will be hard to replace. However, we are hopeful that next year will bring similar counterparts. 59 Senior John Cunningham Joe Gombers Don Frink John Cook Baseball The Marauder baseball team had one of its most successful seasons as they finished in second place in the Center State Conference and reached the semi-finals of the Section III baseball tournament. The team's over- all season record was 12 wins and 6 losses, including sectional play making this the top Sherburne team since the early 40's. The team had only one starting senior, captain Craig Livingston. The rest of the team was underclassmen and indicates a bright future for Sherburne baseball. The team had an excellent batting average of .263, led by John Klockowski at .407. Jon Wales with .373 and Ron Cleveland with .345. Klockowski also led the team with the long ball as he blasted out 6 home runs during the season and drove in an astronomical 36 runs. The starting lineup of Cleveland on the mound. Abbott behind the plate, Klockowski at first. Briglin at second, Wales at short, Acee, Eccleston and Jeffrey in the outfield, will assure success next year. ’63 Schedule WON West Winfield Coopers town Hamilton Saquoit Water ville Richfield Springs LOST 3-0 N. Y Mills 15-7 Clinton 9-1 1-0 2-1 3-1 1-11 1-4 Track ■ % The 1963 edition of the Sherburne Track Team was largely staffed with Freshmen and sophomores. The brightest spot was Clare Fortner, who did an outstanding job running both the high and low hurdles. He set a new record for Class D in the Section 3 Track and Field Championships. Other school records set were the 440 yard relay, the 2 mile run and the hop, step, and jump. With such a young team last year, the Marauders will be looking forward to a bright future in 1964. 63 Cross Country The Cross Country Team lost its meet of the 1963 season to Oneonta, then went on to win three of its next four dual meets. In rapid succession it beat Richfield Springs and Norwich, lost a very close meet to Cooperstown, then won over Sauquoit. At the League Meet the team placed second, again giving way to the strong Cooperstown team. In Class C competition at the Sectional Meet at Chittenango, Sherburne placed 6th out of 15 teams entered. Next year the varsity squad will be without the services of its top runner John Cook, a four year veteran and this year's team Captain. Bob Marano is the only other runner to be lost through graduation and chances are good that the returning squad will be strong enough to improve on this year's successful record. 64 Aetion 'mi m§m Yearbook Council EDITOR, Harry Briglin EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, Tom Acee BUSINESS MANAGER.
