We, the class of 1963, dedicate this yearbook to a teacher who has earned the friendship and respect of our entire class. Regardless of time or place he has always been with us to make our many class projects successful. Most important, his compe- tent leadership has always been accompanied by a light humor that has lifted many dampened spirits. Because of your unselfish devotion to us, we wish to dedicate the Monarch '63 to you, Mr. Zucchi. I Monarch ’63 Presents Adm. and Faculty Seniors Classes Organizations Athletics Prom Ads. Reach- ing the peak of perfection at its mid-winter concert, the Ma- roon Musicians' interpretation of Mozart and Wagner drew forth a deluge of compliments from a host of appreciative listeners. The concentration on concert music combined with the loss of numerous seniors set the summer marching band off to a slow start. The tradition of being a consistent winner was not to be broken however. For by the season's end the March- ing Maroon recovered its usual first place position among other bands of the area. The finale of the marching year came when the band was awarded second prize at the annual state-wide marching band competition at the State Fair in Syracuse. mr. miller 42 marching band 43 color guard Captain: JOANNE REESE Captain: JOANN POWELL guide-ons s.a.t.b. chorus The S. S.A. Girls Chorus of sixty-two voices is well balanced this year, due to its strong twenty-five voice second soprano section - gen- erally the weak spot in this age group. They are preparing a varied program for the High School, as well as several ambitious numbers for their portion of the Spring Choral: some of these in four-part harmony. The mixed Chorus is composed of sixty-eight sopranos, altos, tenors, and basses. Their music ranges from Beethoven to West Side Story and from Israeli songs to Spirituals. Besides their program to the High School, and the Spring Choral Concert, this group is presenting The Hither and Thither of Danny Dither, an unusual musical play by Alex North and Jeremy Gury, starring Joe Brillinger as Lucifer and Kevin Funnell as Danny, with twenty minor leads of equal importance to the success of this clever musical. 46 varsity cheer- leaders |umor varsity cheer- leaders Varsity Captain SEVA DUBUAR Junior Varsity Captain LINDA CURNS Mascot M. O'CONNOR varsity in action junior varsity in action football 1962 Coach Grieve Coach Galusha Coach Smith John Wonka Craig Babcock seniors TRI-CAPTAINS Joe Brillinger Dave Bensley 1962 FOOTBALL SEASON Despite the fact that the Marauders had lost 9 starters from the 1961 starting lineup, the 1962 squad began their season with a bang as they easily trimmed their first four opponents and did not give up a touchdown. The injury jinx then reared its ugly head and the lineup was riddled more each week. With several boys out for the season the Maroon did play some good football but dropped three of their last four games to end up with a 4-3-1 record. Those boys who played their final season for Sherburne were Joe Brillinger, co-cap- tain who was injured previous to the season's opening and did not play in any games; Dave Bensley, co-captain, who missed the last two games because of an injury; John Wonka, co-captain; and Craig Babcock. With the return of 12 lettermen the Marauders should field a respectable team next season, particularly with the addition of several underclassmen who led the 8th and 9th team to their sec- ond straight unbeaten season. maroon goes to the air gang tackling 56 Syrian bandits maroon in action picking up 10 57 basketbal At this writing, the Marauder hoopsters show great promise for the remainder of the season and for next year. After a poor start and one bad injury, the Maroon has hit the victory trail with five wins out of the past six games. The two big wins have been over Hamilton 72-66 and Waterville 62-61. The team has sorely missed sophomore post-man Kenny Van Wagner, who suffered a broken arm at Sauquoit. The bulk of the playing so far has been carried by soph Joe Yerton, juniors Harry Briglin, Tom Acee, Dave Taylor, John Klockowski and Jon Wales and frosh Bruce Eccleston. Jon Wales is a good bet to finish as the Center State Conference's leading scorer with a 22. 5 game average. The remainder of the squad is rounded out by jun- iors Tom Larner and Dan Koenig and senior Dick Perkins. With all boys except Perkins re- turning for another year and with any kind of luck. The Marauders should find themselves at the top of the Conference come next season. 58 59 wrestling The 1962-63 Sherburne wrestling squad turned in the best record of its three year existence. With four dual meets left on the schedule the team is 7 and 2 and Center State Confer- ence Champions. Both losses came at the hands of a power- house, non-league Sidney team. The three seniors on the team have turned in excellent records for the season and were without doubt the prime factor of the successful year. As 136 Charlie Collier is 7-2, as 140 co-captain Dick Bar- rows is 9-0, as 148 co-captain Dave Bensley is 3-3-1. These people will be sorely missed next year. A major rebuilding job must take place. Outstanding underclassmen included Joe Gombers 8-0-1, John Cunningham 5-4, Carl Koenig 5- 3, Jim Dubar 2-4, Anthony Abbott 4-2, and Don Frink 6- 2-1. Sherburne will host the Center State invitational wres- tling tournament on February 9th which will feature some of the outstanding teams and wrestlers of Central New York. 60 senior wrestlers Dick Barrows: co-captain Dave Bensley: co-captain Charles Collier Gary Kaufmann baseball The 1962 Marauder baseball team turned in the most wins since the 1942 team as they copped ele- ven decisions in nineteen starts. The locals were right in the thick of the league race until the final week. The team was both offensively and defensively strong hitters, and the fielding was generally excellent. Despite their outstanding record the Marauder team was largely made up of underclassmen, which indicates a rather bright picture for future seasons. The most serious losses were the co-captains, Bob Conrad and Dick Dempsey, both of whom contributed much to the Marauder success. The return of John Klockowski, Jon Wales, Craig Livingston, Tom Acee, Anthony Abbott, Ron Cleveland, Joe Brillinger and Ken Wilcox seems to indicate that the Marauders will be a team to reckon with in future seasons. won Edmeston, Mt. Upton, Cooperstown, Sauquoit, Waterville, Richfield Springs, Earlville, Cato (2), Clinton lost Earlville, New York Mills, Hamilton, Oxford, V-V-S, West Winfield, Greene 64 track The 1962 track squad was large- ly built around graduating seniors. The team competed in four regular meets, four invitational and sec- tional meets, as well as the Section III relay carnival. The Marauders placed fourth in the Center State Conference meet. In the Class D section of the area finals the locals copped fourth place, with a total of 15 points. cross country The young athlete attending Sher- burne High School who participates in sports does so for many reasons - for fitness, for school honor, or perhaps for the roar of the spectators and per- sonal glory. The young men on the cross-coun- try team are not stimulated by the roar of crowds and are not driven to new records by them. This seemed, however, to be no factor in the determination of this year's team. They trained hard and ran well, as their record indicates. It was their best in recent years. 67 Best Wishes to the Class of '63 SHERBURNE COOPERATIVE G.L.F. SERVICE, INC. Personality opens many doors, but character must keep them open.
