FOREWORD Now that we, the Class of 1962, have reached the end of our high school years, we wish to present in this, the Monarch '62, a picture of the students and faculty of Sherburne Central School in their efforts to work together to produce a tradition of scholarship, athletics, music, and citizenship. We hope that the Monarch '62 will provide you, the reader, with as much enjoyment as it has provided us in producing it. SHERBURNE CENTRAL SCHOOL, SHERBURNE, NEW YORK OUR ALMA MATER All hail to Sherburne High School, Alma Mater true, Loyalty and honor We pledge to you, Maroon and white the fairest, Songs to thee we raise, Through Chenango Valley Echoes thy praise. WYNN 62 Monarch Staff PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Each of the 1400 students in our school system is an individual, with unique abilities, talents, needs and interests. Our goal is to provide each of these students with an equal opportunity for a good education. The central goal, said the President's 'Com- mission on Goals,' should be a renewal of faith in the infinite value and unlimited possibilities of individual development. Whatever constitutes a barrier to a man's inalienable rights should be swept away. The experience of publishing this yearbook is helping many students to develop talents through independent efforts as well as through group achievements. We salute the Class of 1962 for its fine effort. 4 Vice Principal District Supervisor MR. WEBB MR. YOUMANS BOARD OF EDUCATION FIRST ROW: Mr. Canny - Mr. Webb - Mr. Benedict SECOND ROW: Mr. Clark - Mr. Cunningham - Mr. Cahill - Mr. Campbell BUS DRIVERS CAFETERIA STAFF CUSTODIANS MR. WALSH DEDICA TION The publication of this yearbook offers us the opportunity to give much deserved credit to a man who has been teaching and advising us throughout our high school years. He has given us more than our share of his valuable time and effort, both after school and far into the night. His tireless effort and patience was instrumental in making our Junior Prom the success that it was. Not only in time, but also in money was he generous, always ready to buy another magazine or another box of stationery if that would help us achieve our ultimate goal. In his classroom he tried to prepare us for our future lives as citizens as well as for further study in high school and college. For these reasons, Mr. Walsh, we, the class of 1962, dedicate this yearbook to you. 8 MR. MARTINELLI Our second dedication is to a man who, like Mr. Walsh, has always made time for us and our problems. Many of the successes of our class lie in the effervescent spirit that he has instilled in us, his students. No matter how drab the subject matter, his dramatic choice of words and actions has made it enjoyable as well as understandable to us. Without resorting to harsh words, he has com- manded our respect and obedience. His encourage- ment has always urged us to work to our utmost capabilities and has demanded from us a maximum effort. Our future endeavors will be colored by this. For these things we are grateful, Mr. Mar- tinelli, and wish to dedicate this yearbook to you. The big event of this year was our dance Overgrown Gardens. The last meeting of the year was adjourned by president Rolland Collins. On September 11, 1959, the Sophomore class meeting was called to order by former president Rolland Collins. The secretary's and treasurer's reports were given and accepted. There was a total of $64.75 in our treasury. The new class officers who were elected were Bill Reese - President, Bernie Ferris - Vice- President, Geraldine Wynn - Secretary, and Maxine VanWagner - Treasurer. Our first money making project was the Sadie Hawkins held on November 14, 1959. The second project was a dance which was entitled Swing Into Spring.” The last meeting was adjourned on May 27, 1960, by president Bill Reese. On September 9, 1960, the Junior class meeting was called to order by former president Bill Reese. The secretary's and treasurer’s reports were given and accepted. There was a total of $184. 00 in our treasury. New officers were Pam Borst - President, Bernie Ferris - Vice-President, Geraldine Wynn - Secretary, and Bob Bland - Treasurer. The first order of business was the J - Hops and the school fair. Wonderland By Night was decided upon as the theme for our Prom. This was very successful and very beautiful. Other activities of this year included the magazine sales, bake sales, car washes, and the Prom float in the Pageant of Bands parade. The last meeting of the year was adjourned on June 14, 1961, by our president Pam Borst. On September 8, 1961, the Senior class meeting was called to order by former president Pam Borst. The secretary's and treasurer's reports were given and accepted. We had a total of $2143.75 in our treasury. The new officers who were elected were John Lewicki - President, Jim Hudson - Vice-Pres- ident, Geraldine Wynn - Secretary, and Maxine VanWagner - Treasurer. The first order of business was the magazine sales. A spagetti supper was held on November 2, 1961, and was an extreme success. Other projects included our booth at the School fair, the booth at home games and movies, and the Donkey Basketball game. Our main project of this year was the Monarch 1962, which was made possible only through our advisor, Mr. Martinelli to whom we wish to express our deepest appreciation. Our Senior trip, which was taken in April, was a trip to Washington, D.C. The final meeting of the class of 1962 was adjourned in June, 1962, by president John Lewicki. Koenig THE MARA UDERS The 1961 Marauder football squad turned in a good record with six wins and two losses, for a second place finish, in the Center State Conference. The Maroon started out fast, winning their first five games by downing Clinton, Sauquoit, West Winfield, Waterville and Cooperstown on successive Saturdays. The next two games cost them the championship as they dropped decisions to Hamilton and Rich- field Springs, but won the season finale with a close decision over New York Mills. The squad was largely a Senior outfit, with eignt of the eleven starters from the Senior class. Several underclassmen did plav a con- siderable amount and should supply a nucleus for next year s squad. 32 n rr r. A TRI-CAPTAINS: Butch Lasher, Rolland Collins, Les Palmer BERNIE FERRIS MR. GALUSHA DAVE CURRY Line Coach MR. SMITH LES PALMER BUTCH LASHER MARA UDERS ON THE MO VE BASKETBALL Lacking in height but not in heart, Sherburne Central's 1961-1962 cagers promised to give their opponents p'.enty of trouble. No team would be running away with them. At this writing the team record stood at five and five with six games and the Sectionals yet to come. Of the five losses, four had been by one or two points. If the detense could be tightened up, the Maroon Marauders could well find themselves showing a favorable record at the end o' the season and a good record in the Section III play-offs. Ferris. Collins. Conrad, Curry, Even. Kenyon, and Dempsey were the Seniors on die squad. Jon Wales, the only Sophomore and Charles Wilcox, the only Junior, rounded out the squad. Whatever the final outcome, the school could well be proud of their representation. 37 DICK DEMPSEY DAVE CURRY BRUCE EWEN BERNIE FERRIS ROLLAND COLLINS BOB CONRAD RAY KENYON HERBURi SWERBURHf ERBURRf Coach: MR. SHUSTER J. V. BASKETBALL Coach: MR. SMITH WRESTLING The 1961-1962 squad took to the mats with 24 members - two of which were seniors, Butch Lasher and Bob Bland, co- captains for the season. Although young and in need of ex- perience, the squad has an overall record of 5 and 4 as this article goes to press with 4 matches yet to wrestle. The prospect for a winning season is good (2nd place in league standing is already assured). Public support is still a problem, but in the next year, a campaign to educate the public as to the value and under- standing of amateur wrestling will prove a valuable aid to- ward creating spectator interest. BOB BLAND BUTCH LASHER 41 Coach: MR. GRIEVE m BASEBALL 42 The 1961 baseball squad produced the best winning record for a Marauder squad since 1956. The team was made up largely of underclassmen with several sopho- mores and freshmen in the starting lineup. The nine regular starters will all be back for the 1962 season which provides a promising future for the Sherburne baseball picture. In addition to the eight league games, the team played six nonleague contests. The high point of the season was a weekend trip to Cato-Meridian for a doubleheader. Coach MR. ROBINSON TRACK The Sherburne thin clads had a good season placing fourth in the Section 3 Class B Finals at New Hartford. Although the team was hindered by depth, there were out- standing results accomplished by individual team members. A new school record was set in Shot Put by Malcomb Reese which was 49’-3”. To begin the marching season, the Sherburne Band held the Eleventh Annual Pageant of Bands with 35 bands participating. During the rest of the summer, the Sherburne Band placed first in every one of their many marching competitions. The highlight of the season was the two-day trip to the State American Legion Convention held in Albany this year. The band members not only had a wonderful time in Albany, but also received a large and beautiful trophy. The band is very grateful to the co-opera- tion received from the people of Sherburne who contributed generously of their time and money to help this organization. The band also wishes to express its sincere and deep apprecia- tion to its director and musical instructor, Mr. Frank Miller, without whose help it could not exist. CHOR US This year, as in previous years, the chorus is divided into two parts, an all girl S.S.A. and a mixed S.A.T.B., both under the competent and spirited direction of Mrs. Marjorie Hartman. The organiza- tion is active throughout the school year in making our assemblies enjoyable and climaxes its activities in an annual spring concert. This is a gala occasion for all involved as well as for the community, and gives the chorus, as a body and the individual soloists, an opportunity to work before an appreciative audi- ence. The chorus would like to thank Mrs. Hartman for all the special help and patience that she has al- ways shown us and without which chorus would not have been the delightful experience that it has been.
