RICHARD WRIGHT It is hard to know which Dick has been the smoothest with--girls or basketball. Regardless, he has won fame with both, and it is easy to see which he prefers. His charm wins everyone to his side. Mr. Caprio Mr. McCarty PRESIDENT: C. Coye VICE PRESIDENT: K. Locke SECRETARY: F. Anderson TREASURER: S. Wood Our Freshman class officers were: President, Dick Wright; Vice President, Sheila Noon; Secretary, Fran Anderson; and Treasurer, Walt Miller. Our first dance, Winterlude, was held in January. We earned a total of $72 that year. Our Sophomore class officers were: President, Sandy Eggleston; Vice Presi- dent, Bonnie Thompson; Secretary, Barb Fox; and Treasurer, Dave Jenkins. In November we held our Sadie Hawkins Dance, and in May we held a rec- ord hop, Sophomore Shuffle. By June we had $162.42 in our treasury. Our Junior leaders were: President, Phil Webb; Vice President, Wayne Bunn; Secretary, Fran Anderson; and Treasurer, Carol Sprague. Our Junior Prom, Jardin Espanol, was held May 27, 1960, in the new Elementary School gym- nasium. Our treasury had $968. 42 at the close of that year. At last our big Senior year came, and we were busier than ever. Our offi- cers were: President, Carolee Coye; Vice President, Clara Locke; Secretary, Fran Anderson; and Treasurer, Sandy Wood. Our projects included making a record in magazine sales, doing very well with our School Fair booth, selling refreshments at home sports events, a spaghetti supper, and a donkey basket- ball game. Our big project was the Monarch '61, which was possible only through the help of Mr. Martinelli, to whom we are all grateful. We are also very grateful to Mr. McCarty and Mr. Caprio for leading us through our high school years. Respectfully submitted, Frances Anderson, Secretary We knew each other only one day; We worked, we rested, we were sad, we were gay. Our day began in a glorious sunrise; Shining, gleaming, sparkling in our eyes. We met--we started walking; Our road was long--winding. At times the path was worn away or cluttered; We fumbled along in cold and rain--we shuddered. But when we stumbled, fell or wandered from our way; A strong guidance led us back--to where we went astray. At last when we came to an opening clear; Our lives were shaped--our fears disappeared. While as we planned succeeding days; The earth grew still--wrapped in a haze. Then meeting the rim of a large full moon; Came a ray of a sunset--inviting a placid tune. And as we watched this brilliant ray; It divided our clearing into separate ways. Our day was over, the sun was set; Above the horizon, new goals to be met. As each day passes--each new problem begun; We will remember that each answer comes with the setting of each sun. o CLASSES Nancie Stapleton Mike Poutard Joyce Mummery Bruce Ewen Sally Price Gordie Monroe Karen Niles Bobby Conrad Jane Slater Ed Newman Carol Moore Ken Thomas Barb Parsons Bill Davidson Maxine VanWagner Herb Knight Bev Gilbert John Lewicki Jean Andrews Leslie Palmer Jo Ann Fox Dave Sanderson Joyce Muhlfeld Don Hyatt Chris Hinkley Bill Reese Judy Wilcox Butch Lasher Leila Brown Rol Collins President, Pam Borst Vice President, Bernie Ferris J e Gfa ass Sharon Kellogg Clarence Rowe Marianne Schult Harold Stapleton Sylvia Knorr Dick Dempsey Polly Pudney Jim Hudson Bev Benedict Gary Houck Geraldine Wynn Bob Bland David Ennist Gloria Moon Norman Foster Cheryl Cook Hugh Cook Lois Conley Ray Kenyon Kathy Annesi Nancy Funk Ann Abbott Julia Maltzan Irene McQueen Lena Mae Guyton Marjorie Burlison I Oaij jf TKeetinys FRESHMAN OFFICERS: President, J. The Senior Class of 1961 would like to give Mr. Miller merited credit for all he does for his students. He tediously selects the works to be played and makes sure that the great composers and their works are included. Not only does he broaden minds culturally, but he attempts to teach students to think for themselves. He tries to instill thoughts toward analyzing realistically the problems that face us all. The Senior Class of 1961 would like to pay a deserved tribute to our vocal music director, Mrs. Hartman, for her untiring efforts to uncover and develop talents in the students. She acquaints her choirs with the great composers and their works, so that the student may become a well rounded person. Her experience in the theater arts affords her play casts with excellent opportunities to express themselves in drama under her capable direction. Mrs. Hartman has always stressed the need for individuality and self- expression in the fields of the perform- ing arts and in everyday living. With only four senior starters, the future looks considerably brighter. The starting team included five juniors, a sophomore and a freshman, in addition to the seniors. Injuries and sickness hindered the Maroon in the latter part of the season, but did provide some full scale experience for several returning players. The team will miss Ed Postiglion, smashing fullback; the bruising line play of Dave Jenkins and Wayne Bunn; and the defensive work of Ed Newman - all of whom will graduate. The re- turn of 20 veterans next season promises for a bright season despite the loss of the outstanding seniors. ED POSTIGLION DAVE JENKINS JODY THOMAS WAYNE BUNN Senior boys who spark the team. VARSITY BASKETBALL - COACH, Mr. St. Peter The important conference! Sherburne's varsity basketball team looked ahead with hope for the coming season. Many unknowns had to be answered and in those answers lay the key to success. Gone were seven veterans from the previous year, so the problem of inexperience loomed high. Lack of height was to be a problem as the team averaged well under six feet. The only returns from last year's squad were three seniors: George Dennis, Roy Straka, and Dick Wright. Leonard Mayne, has returned after a years absence. Eight juniors rounded out the squad. Agressive- ness and good ball handling were looked for to make up for size. No matter what the outcome of this year, Sherburne looked fairly well stocked for 1961-1962. J.V. BASKETBALL - COACH, Ml. Shuster Varsity wrestling returned to Sherburne this year for the first time in several years. A large turn-out of twenty-four boys gave a promise of good things to come. With the exception of Captain Dave Jenkins, the squad is made up of underclassmen. The team faces a tough schedule this year of fourteen dual meets and three tourna- ments. These will give it the experience needed to mold champion- ship material for the coming seasons. 1961 BASEBALL TEAM COACH: Mr. Grieves Jjaseba I The 1960 edition of the Mauraders base- ball team had its ups and downs. They had their good days and their poor days but did show a definite improvement as the season progressed. They played particularly well against the top contenders. Clinton and Cooperstown. Clinton, the league cham- pion, downed them in the final inning of an extremely close game, while the Mauraders knocked Cooperstown out of a chance for the title in the big upset of the year. With seven of the nine starters returning the future looks bright. The team was largely built around sophomores and fresh- men which promises fair predictions for the next two years. Bunt that ball! Slide, don't pose! 1961 TRACK TEAM - COACH, Mr. Robinson The Sherburne thin clads had a very good season placing 4th in the Section 3 Class B Finals at Clinton Dewitt. Three boys, Bob Brown in the broad jump and high jump, Bruce Ewen in the half mile run, and Bill Sargeant went on to participate in the Section 3 Finals at Rome. Bill Sargeant, an excellent miler, qualified to run in the state meet at West Point. New school records were set in the mile by Bill Sargeant, the half mile by Bruce Ewen, and the broad jump by Bob Brown. Although we have lost our seniors who were a great asset to the team, we are looking for a good year in ”61. CROSS COUNTRY - M.
