Shepherd College students, faculty, and alumni honored that memorable decade as they took off in full swing during the annual homecoming fes- tivities. Homecoming '80 looked back at the 60's on October ll-12 with numerous activities. To start the Homecoming events, a spirited pep rally was held on fri- day evening in the amphitheatre. Along with the cheerleaders, stu- dents were urged to perform original cheers to add to the excitement. The amateur talent was followed by the distribution of small tokens of appre- ciation presented to the players and coaches. Y The 60's theme was carried out later that night at a bonfire held be- hind Thatcher Hall. Music of this memorable age was provided by Charlie Chiamardis which added a reminiscent touch to the excite- ment. Saturday morning the chariot races were held on the football field. The invented devices displayed the creative talents of the participants. What was yet to come later that day made Homecoming worth the while. The big game saturday afternoon exhibited the theme of the rebellious 60's as the Ram's took on the Salem College Tigers. Like the 6O's, the Ram's were out to get what they deserved, and indeed, they did. The final score of 28-7 proved the motto of Ram Power. Half-time entertainment featured the crowing of the Homecoming Queen, Kathy Jones, along with the recognition of her court, including: Denise Ayers, Susie Hatter, Beth McNally, and Sharon Beaulieu. Re- presentative from the Junior class was Gage Sheridan, Amy McNally represented the Sophomore class, and Laura Wells was the Freshman representative. SC president, James Butcher, took the honor of present- ing Miss Jones with her title, as well as acknowledging her court. The annual Homecoming dance ended the weekend with entertain- ment provided by After Six. This formal event completed the sensa- tional weekend enjoyed by Shep- herd students. Winter Carnival '81, an event students eagerly await on their return back from winter break. ln its sixth year, W.C. has sort of become a tradition that students look forward to in breaking up the winter blues. Starting out W.C. '81 on Wednes- day, Feb. 4th, everyone slid into the pub for Ski Lodge Pub Nite. Dressed in sweaters, boots, and to- boggans, students sat around a glowing fireplace enjoying S'mores and hot cider. Thursday night rolled around and what's more appropriate than the WINTER CARNIVAL '81 On Friday, after two nights of laid- back and casual events, students put away their jeans and pulled out their formal duds. At 4:30, a Pre- mium Dinner was served in the S.C. dining hall. Following their munch out, students dropped by the semi-formal dance, The Snow Ball, to check out the performing band, 41 East. What other event could be held on Saturday night other than the tradi- tional Casino? This event where stu- dents gambled their play money away got the biggest turn out of all. lt's no wonder - this is the time stu- Come Sunday, The Gong Show, an event that was new to all, was held. Dr. Howard Carper and V.J. Brown were M.C.'s for this hilar- ious event. Some real Talent was displayed by some of the contes- tants, as well as wit and humor by others. All in all, the events proved to be equally entertaining to every- one. Upon the closingiof The Gong Show came the closing of W.C. '81 as well. These five days of games, dances, and fun helped give stu- dents a bit more spirit and an extra little push to get them through that long winter semester ahead of traditional Country Barn Dance? dents can really prove themselves at them. 4 This was held in the den, and like Black Jack, 7 Up-7 Down. All contestants were busy prepar- ing themselves weeks ahead of time for this big event. On Saturday, April llth, all the girls had to be up and ready pretty early for a person- ality judging with whom else, but the Pageant Judges. Monday, April 13th, was the big night for the con- testants - the night they had to go out on stage to be watched by not only the judges, but their friends and families as well! Starting out the show was the Shepherd College Jazz Ensemble, and Glen Presgraves of WHAG-TV, served as Master of Ceremonies. The girls all modeled casual wear, followed by the swim suit and evening gown competition. This year was a little unusual be- cause there were seven finalists cho- sen, instead on five, due to a tie by the judges. Now, the moment every- one has been waithing for - Miss Shepherd College! And the winner was . . . Marie LoScalzo, Miss Turner Hall. First runner-up was Donna Newman, Miss Cheerleaderg and Sue LaVigne, Miss Delta Zeta was sec- ond runner-up. The four finalists were: Julie Maugins, Miss Tau Kappa Epsilon, Patty Reynolds, Miss Gardiner Hall, Debbie Keller, re- presenting Botler Hall, and Miss Fine Arts, Gina DeMatteis. All seven finalists received roses and a trophy as keepsakes of the Miss Shepherd College Pageant. Ma- rie will proceed to the Miss West Virginia Pageant where she will com- pete for the W. Va. title. ln it's 9th year, the Miss Shepherd College Pagent has become another event that everyone looks forward to. The Pageant is sponsored by the Theta Xi Fraternity, and this year the Phi Sigma Epsilon Fraternity Brothers lent a helping hand. l l I N l , 1 gf' ff- 'T 9 3 1 1 'E 5 5 xktgl' ' 4 1 l w I 1 M f f 'Z' ' 1 BX wx X V' V X A l , fx. But through Walter Barr's hard work and determination, the 1980 version of Ram football held true to the winning tradition established by the head coach and his valuable as- sistants nine years ago. The Ram's Saturday battles won them national acclaim in the NAlA's top twenty ranked teams all season long, being ranked as high as 10th in the nation- al poll. The Rams bumped and bruised their way through the 11 game sea- son to salvage what the head coach called a very satisfying year. A hard hitting defense with a solid running and passing offense marked the year that gained recognition for some of the top stars for the 1980 season. FOGTBALL Eight Ram footballers were named to the WVIAC All Conference Team. Three Rams were named to the first team and five to the second team. George Snowden, a 6-3, 235 lb., and Charles Pierce, a 5-11, 216 lb. center, were named to the All - WVIAC offensive first team. Big George Snowden signed with the Denver Broncos, and will attempt to join former Ram Wayne Wilson in the pro ranks. Charle Pierce was a rare three time selection who earned those honors, along with being named to the first team All American in the NAIA. Mike Essis, a 6-1, 218 lb. tackle was the only Ram named to the All- WVIAC defensive first team. Essis had a tackle average of 10.3 per yM95xf'ffQ-.' -1 , 4' K, 3. game that led him to be named hon- orable mention All American. Named to the All Conference of- fensive second team was tight end Miguel Bueso, and Shepherd's best passing quarterback in years, Glen Ryhanich, who threw for 5293 in gaining 793 yards. Named to the All-WVIAC defen- sive second team were freshman no- seguard Mark Brower, linebacker Gene Lugat, and Eric Hofstetter, de- fensive back. The Rams finished the 1980 season with a 7-3-1 record. As WVIAC Northern Division champi- ons, Shepherd was defeated in the Coal Bowl by Concord College, 19-0. FOOTBALL BASKETBALL Shepherd basketball in 1980-81 proved to be a rebuilding year for the Rams, although suffering through a 9-18 season. Despite the Ram's record, mem- bers ofthe team were recognized for their outstanding performances. Among them was Antoine Makle, who led the team in scoring 20 times with a 23.6 average. Makle's 23.6 point average for 27 games, a total of 638 points, set a WVIAC record for freshmen. Another Ram, Mark Palmer, leading rebounder of 21 games and scoring seven times dur- ing the season was among the out- standing team members. Palmer was also named honorable mention All WVIAC. A third Ram, Keith Ad- ams, was also commended upon his contributions to the team. Adams dealt 236 assists for an 8.7 average, leading all team members, and set- ting a school record for total assists. With these three men returning, and the further development of the remaining team and incoming fresh- men, coach Bob Starkey must reel optimistic about the 1981-82 sea- son. The up and down Lady Rams struggled through the season win- ning 9 out of 24 games. With experience returning for the com- ing season, Jones has to be looking for better things to come in women's basket- ball. This year's top performers were Jen- ny Hawbacker, Margaret Sears, and sen- ior Peachy Meadows. Hawbacker led the team in rebounds for the season and led the team in scoring in five games. Margret Sears was the leading scorer for the Rams. Sears was the top scorer in 10 games on the season, averaging 16 points per game. The Shepherd College women's swimming team capped an unde- feated l2-O regular season with a third place finish in the National As- sociation of Intercollegiate Athletics Swimming and Diving Champion- ships in Liberty, Mo. The Shepherd College men's swimming team compiled a 9-5 regu- lar season and finished I8th in the nation in the NAIA Swimming and Diving Championship also in Liber- ty, Mo. Overall, Shepherd brought back six All-Americans to the Eastern SWIIVIIVII Ci Panhandle - five women and one man. Kathy Etzel, Tracy Liner, Cathy Blair, Mary Verna, and Karen Workman became the first women All-Americans in Shepherd history. Duncan Morrell was the Ram's sec- ond men's swimming team All- American in the school's history. This year we had better swim- mers and harder workers by far, Shepherd Swimming Coach, Rick Gibson said. The men improved dramatically over the course of the season. The women have always been goody I knew they had poten- tial. Team effort was a key element in the success of both teams through- out the season. Both teams were blessed with unbelievable point scor- ing depth up and down the roster. Teamwork, dedication, hard work, excellent coaching, and that driving desire to be successful all added up to produce the banner year in the history of Shepherd Col- lege Swimming. In regards to the future of the Shepherd Swimming program - it looks brighter than the North Star. Many super athletes are returning along with a strong cast of recruited incoming freshmen. Indeed, it looks as though a men's or women's NAIA National Swimming Championship is on the way for Shepherd College. ll' 1,5 5. -X.-62 4' 4' r , . Q as If 1' FACULTY THE DIVISION THAT CHARLIE BUILT Ei' 'tw Most students probably know of Professor Charlie Printz, yet few know of the hard work and long years this man has dedicated to Shepherd College's business depart- ment to make it the success that it is today. Now, after 34 years as a professor and chairman of the Divi- sion of Business Administration, Professor Printz will be retiring in the spring. Even though retiring from Shep- herd College, Printz will still be going strong with such activities as his Certified Public Accounting firm, an oil product distributorship, and a grain, feed and farm machinery busi- ness. As if that's not enough to keep him busy, Prints maintains his own farm, and also has a partnership in another farm. Born in Jefferson County, W. Va., Printz attended Charles Town High School, and graduated in 1936. He then proceeded to study at Shep- herd, graduating in 1940. In 1941, Printz taught business at Berkeley Springs High School. He later re- ceived his MBA at W.Va. University and did post-graduates study in the University of N.C., American Univer- sity, and the University of Sidney Australia. 1947 rolled around and Printz found himself back at Shepherd Col- lege, only this time as a professor. At the time, the business depart- ment in Knutti Hall only offered a straight degree in business adminis- tration, and Printz taught most of the classes. Finally, by the 195O's, Shepherd had established a Division of Business Administration with Pro- fessor Printz as the chairman. The Division now offered majors in busi- ness administration, marketing, ac- counting, and business education. From that point on, with Charlie Printz as the first division chairman, Shepherd's business department ex- panded continuously. Of course, today everyone knows of the many degrees and courses offered to business students that now attend Shepherd College. And indeed, the curriculum has expand- ed immensely in the past 30 years, thanks to Shepherd's one and only Charlie Printz. 5 WG' Ji MR, MlLLER'S MILESTONEH Floyd W. Miller, head librarian at Shepherd College, will also be retir- ing this spring along with Charles Printz. He has been at Shepherd for the past 19 years and has seen the many changes that have taken place, including the construction of a new library. ln 1938, Miller received his bache- lor of arts degree from Findlay Col- lege in Ohio. He also obtained his bachelor's in library science and master's in history in 1940 and 1941 from Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Miller received yet another degree, a master in science, in the university of lllinois. ln addi- tion to hismany degrees, Mr. Miller is active in a number of professional groups such as the W.Va. Library Assoc., American Library Assoc., and Association of College and Re- search Library. ln 1962, when Miller came to Shepherd, the library was on the first floor of Knutti Hall. An old coa- troom served as his office. There were only 32,000 books in the li- brary, yet the room was much too small to handle anymore books. When Miller arrived at his new job as librarian at Shepherd, he also had the job of planning for the construc- tion of the new library. His responsi- bilities included overseeing the building of the library, and organiz- ing the transition from the old to the new library. Upon its completion in 1965, the brand new library was now ready for I use. And who do you think moved those 32,000 books from Knutti Hall to the new library? Students of course! Books were carried by the armload for three-and-a-half hours. At, last, Shepherd College had a real library. Along with the new library came the expansion of the books, audio- visual equipment, microfilm, perio- dicals, and the budget. All these im- provements were overseed by Mill- er. Today, the Shepherd College Li- brary is a valuable resource to not only students, but the community as well. We owe many thanks to Mr. Miller for his many years of work and dedication to Shepherd College. 17941 52'- lN MEMORY OF THE COLONEL Colonel Edmond R. Urquhart, known to many as just The Colo- nel, passed away on March 1, 1981. The Colonel had been with Shepherd College for the past seven- and-a-half years. ln 1972, he served as head resisent of Boteler Hall, and later became the director of resi- dence hall services. But, probably most students remember the Colo- nel wandering around the Student Center where he served as assistant director. ln January of 1980, the Colonel retired from Shepherd.
