Good morning yesterday you wake up and time has slipped away and suddenly it's hard to find the memories you left behind. Remember, do you remember the times of your life? The laughter and the tears the shadows of misty yesteryears the good times and the bad you've seen and all the others inbetween Remember, do you remember? Each look at the joy and the sorrow Put them away in your mind for memories are times that you borrow to spend when you get to tomorrow. Here comes the setting sun The seasons are passing one by one so gather moments while you may collect the dreams you dream today Remember, do you remember the times of your life? - Paul Anka H9539 I 4 i lift-Q .,,..z ' if J X 4 T' 'Q P i Q ga .au K 44, W i . ann-ian ,lt ,ff , ' ' rw rw. fax 'QQ- ' gs , . L H 13 HCDMECOMING1979 HURRAY FOR HOLLYWOGD All the world was a stage as Shepherd College students, staff and alumni celebrated a Hurray for Hollywood Homecoming '79. The year's big event, staged October 12-13, featured many star-studded activities highlighting the Hollywood theme. First on the Homecoming playbill was a rigorous Road Rally with a route that made riding shotgun almost a reality for some ralliers. Rooting on a different kind made the Blue and Ciold Assembly a standing-room-only event. Held in the amphitheater on Friday evening, the assembly provided a golden opportunity for groups to outshine land shoutl opposing groups of Rams fans for prizes. Hollywood had little over Shepherd- stown Friday night, as SC hosted its own Talent ShowfNight Club Night in the Ram's Den. Command performances were turned in by musicians Randy Collins and Crabgrass, singer Tony Palumbo and guitarist Bob Bosley, pianist Dave Weaver and comedian Stu Smith. Dance contests and star look- a-like contests jazzed up the night club atmosphere. Movie Madness could have been the theme for Saturday's big Homecoming Parade, as various campus organizations acted out scenes from favorite movies while parading through Shepherd- stown. The Keystone Kops, Rocky, The Beverly Hillbillies, Grease, and Cleopatra on the Nile were all represented in technicolor, as were the Marching Rams and several other bands and groups. But the Hollywood Homecoming was not to be without drama. Saturday's big football game with West Virginia Wesleyan provided that. With four seconds left in the game, the Rams led the Bobcats 20-17. The never-say-die 'Cats decided to give the goal one more go. . .and almost got it! The Rams weren't the only winners that Saturday afternoon, for a halftime the Homecoming crowd had an audience with a queen. Durinda Sue Decker received the royal title and was crowned by SC President james Butcher. Kim Baker, Sue Lechner, and Nancy Thom completed the trio of Senior representatives. The lunior class was represented by jackie Briggs, Melissa Tayman represented the Sophomore class, and Amy McNally was the Freshman court attendant. The Formal Homecoming Ball, held in the Ram's Den that evening, completed the lively events of the weekend. Long Time Coming provided the sounds, while Shepherd students provided the sights that made this Homecoming a hit for everyone. - 2 . This involved many activities, from pie eating to pyramid building, which lasted from Friday night until Saturday afternoon. The two-keg-grand-prize to the winning team of dorm residents spurred on some very keen competition and resulted in some very good times. Other events included a greased pig contest, a dance contest at the Disco, a shopping cart race, an egg toss contest, and a tug-of-war, among others. The winning team was the ShawfThacher duo lbelowl who celebrated, as expected, with much gusto. ..9?g3X E' 'IH sr I W' 'l!'. A Sf The 5th Annual Winter Carnival proved to be an exciting time for all, with activities to suit every taste. This highlight of the Spring semester began with a bang and a bango at the Square Dance. The johnson Mountain Boys with caller Charley Packard, provided SC with a real, honest-to-goodness good 'ole time. On Thursday, students took advantage of the free bowling, pool, and ping pong up in the Games Room of the Student Center. Friday, there was a premium dinner served in the cafeteria, which was followed by a semi-formal dance in the Ram's Den. Queen of Hearts performed for this event of Winter Carnival '80. Mother Nature came through by 26 Winter Carnival providing the area with five inches of snow, which added to the Winter Carnival atmosphere. Saturday brought with it the event everyone always waits for: the Casino. Prior to that, a Casino Steak Dinner was served in the BluefGrey Room, by reservation only. The Casino itself lasted from 6:30 until 11:45 p.m., when the prizes were raffled off. Raffle tickets were purchased with the winnings from the various casino games. A few of the big prizes included a television, an instamatic and a polaroid camera. Sunday morning a special brunch was served in the cafeteria, with live entertainment by Crabgrass. The WINTER CAR IVAL C-ym was open for swimming and games of volleyball in the afternoon, and a movie, Midnight Express, was shown in the Student Center Ballroom at 8:00 p.m. In it's 5th year as an important event at Shepherd College, Winter Carnival has come a long way from a group of enterprising students in '75 to the dedicated W.C. Committee of today. Thanks to them, the students and supporters of SC, it is an event that won't be easily forgotten. I X I x Vg' 4 :i f- iff 531,-ff? Another feature of the Casino night was the Casino Downs, which was held in the Ballroom. This horse race event drew a good sized crowd of students anxious to try their hand at betting on the horses. 28 Winter Carnival A Prize Raffle replaced the Auction of old, enabling everyone to have a chance at winning a prize. Raffle tickets were placed in the red dice boxes, one box per prize, and winners were drawn at 11:30 p.m. Grab your partner, do-see-do! The much deserved good break in the weather occurred right on schedule and the college community enjoyed a full afternoon and evening of varied entertainment. The celebration opened with the awards assembly in the Ball Room of the College Center. The honorees, as well as Who's Who members and the joseph McMurran Scholars, on a more serious side, can be found on pages 164 8: 165 in the Academic section. Shifting from the formal portion of the program of events, participants moved to the activities area between the College Center and Sara Cree Gymnasium, and were greeted by sounds of the SC jazz Ensemble. The cookout began at five with the serving lines set up on the deck outside the swimming pool. Faculty and staff served the outdoor menu and diners were I able to enjoy games and contests while eating picnic style. The Stonegate Seven provided the music for a street square dance that finished the festivities at about ten-thirty. The SRD Committee had hoped it could arrange a program to properly honor the achievements of our students, to augment the celebration with some entertainment, to draw support from the entire college community, and to bring us all a little closer. It succeeded. f F wi, , f f 3 , , 1 4 8 , , ig ' ha Q ,, 1 IZ.: V T - Q, A ,E ' Ely- '.,V- Z 6 ..' f wa is ' T tia'- ', ,.. i . Even though the weather rained some on the grads' parade, Shepherd's football stands filled to overflowing with proud parents and guests. Marvin Stone lrightj, editor of U.S. NEWS AND WORLD REPORT, delivered the commencement address, and SC President lames Butcher delivered the diplomas to the some-jubilant, s Class President William-T which is to be a portrait H Qreative Arts, Cen,term4 MV ,MMM Then, with a final cheer and a final collective sigh of 1980, diplomas in hand, took their first step into the world. The team was coming off a 7-4 season, a Coal Bowl appearance and a national ranking. However, only 15 lettermen returned from that team with heavy losses in the offensive backfield and on defense. All those involved knew that it would be a challenge for the 1979 Rams to maintain Shepherd's successful grid tradition. Utilizing a team comprised largely of underclassmen lthere were only four seniors on the rosterb the Rams posted a 5-5 overall record and a 5-4 mark in the WVIAC. Although by most stan- dards a 5-5 is a very successful campaign, by Shepherd's high stan- dards, this season was less than satisfactory. As Head Coach Walter Barr comments, A 5-5 record is poor to us. However, the Coach who has a career record of 99-34-3, says emphatically that this year's Shepherd Football Team was better than a .500 squad. We played well at times, but we made too many mistakes, he said. But the big thing is that we never got down over a loss or a big deficit in a game. We are proud of the athletes and the way they worked. It is always a privilege to work with people who are as dedicated as they are. More specifically, the Coach cited too many turnovers, youth and a lack of experience as main factors which caused us to lose several games we would normally have won. However, the 1979 season was not without its fine moments and players. Showing the importance of the home field advantage, the Rams won all three games held on the Shepherd campus. Two of those games stand out as highlights of the season. cont'd on page 105 -1' . I 'wi . 1 '-'17 Hn,.ie,:-'Lang .- Quarterback Glenn Ryhanych rolls out and fires one over the middle. QP' FOOTBALL lcont'dl On October 13th at Homecoming, the Rams took on West Virginia Wesleyan. After battling back from a deficit to take a 20-17 lead in the fourth quarter, Shepherd was on defense for Wes- leyan's final play. Most Shepherd fans were certain of victory until the Wesleyan receiver caught a desperation pass for seemingly the winning touch- down. However, Everett Yore caught the receiver and yousted him out of bounds at the Shepherd 1-foot line to end the game. The Shepherd faithful breathed a huge sigh of relief. An even more remarkable game took place on Parent's Day, October 27, before an enthusiastic home crowd. The opponent was West Virginia Tech and by the fourth quarter the Rams had fallen to a 24-0 deficit. With nine minutes to play, Shepherd unleashed a suddenly potent passing attack, led by quarterback Glen Ryhanyck, to finally get on the scoreboard. Teaming with an aggressive defense, the offense went on to score three more times. In nine minutes the Rams had scored four times to overcome a 24-0 deficit for a 27-24 victory! Several players had excellent 1979 seasons. Center Charlie Pierce was recognized as the 1st team center on the All-WVIAC team. Offensive tackle Mike Shamblin received a Special Honorable Mention from the WVIAC. The conference also awarded Honor- able Mention to defensive stars Karl Morris and Mike Essis. Halfback Fred Dorsey led the team in rushing with 531 yards and a 4.4 yard per carry average. Duwyane Caddy was the second leading tackler on the team from his middle linebacker position. Hopes and spirits for next season are very high. If we work hard and our athletes stay in school, we won't be .500 too many times in the next few years, Coach Barr predicted. We're going to be darn hard to beat, predicted Starkey confidently. With a final record of 17-12 and a second place finish in the West Virginia Conference behind nationally ranked Fairmont State, Coach Starkey's predictions turned out very accurately. Playing a fast-breaking offense and a pressure defense, the Rams were right on the heels of Fairmont State until the very end of the regular season. ln the Conference tournament, the Rams defeated a hot Glenville team but lost in the semi-finals and finished in fourth place. The all-tournament team includ- ed Shepherd players Chuck Hipp and Phil Branch. Several players had standout seasons in 1979-80. Senior guard john Koepke led the team in scoring for the second consecutive year, averaging 14 points per game. Larry Cain averaged 12 points and led the team in assists. Forward Craig Battle led the team in rebounds while averaging 13 points. Senior Chuck Hipp averaged 10 points and 7 rebounds from his center position. When looking ahead to next season, several things become apparent. The solid play and leadership of seniors Cain, Hipp and Koepke will be sorely missed. However, on the positive side, there are several players returning who played a great deal of basketball in 1979-80. Players like Phil Branch, Craig Battle, Craig Dixon, Kenny Keyes, Keith Adams and Chris Dixon, will form the backbone of next season's team. Other returning players include Mike Krayzel, Steve Siebert and Mike Washington. With these returning players and hopes for a successful recruiting year, the Shepherd tradition of basketball excellence seems certain to continue. 108 Basketball A tense moment in the game is reflected in Coach Starkey's hard concentration. l If O 1, gl. Although they were beaten in the first round of the WVIAC Tournament, the Lady Rams finished the season with a very respectable 10-11 mark. Scoring leaders for the season were veteran guard Peachy Meadows averaging 16.6 ppg, followed by forward Dorinda Tague at 14.3 ppg, and Elaine Teets with 11.2 ppg. The team was bothered by injuries throughout the season. Early in the year, veterans june Eggleton and Cheryl Roberts were sidelined with knee injuries. Then Beverly McCann was hurt late in the season. However, IS THE WORD! the remaining players and first year players, Teets, jenny Ruth and Betsy Wall came through to spark the improvement of the Lady Rams Basketball fortunes. Teets led the team in rebounds with 10.3 per game, followed by Wall at 9.0 per game. Ruth led the team at the free throw line shooting 81 percent. Others who contributed to the 1979-80 team were Sue Heavener, Pam Hohman, and Terry Youngblood. As for next season, Coach Anne jones says, We will be looking for height and quickness. Overall, we will be looking to build up our depth. All the fans will be looking for the continued improvement in She- pherd's Womens Basketball. ., . ,- 3 ,J - 1 y- 1 1. 'W .. The team posted a 12-12 record for the season iincluding tournament gamesj. ln the State Tournament held at Concord College, the Lady Rams placed fifth with victories over Fairmont State College and West Virginia Tech. The losses were at the hands of first place University of Charleston, and second place Salem College. junior Sally Kerr was named to the All-Tournament Squad. According to Head Coach Beverly Holden, the team's biggest asset was its good attitude. The team also showed great improvement over the course of the season. Since the team is made up mainly of freshmen and sophomores, the 1979 squad was offered a chance to gain valuable experience while at the same time improve their skills. This combination of youth, exper- ience, improved play and good atti- tude offers hope for a bright future of Lady Rams Volleyball. an '..u,....r 7' ' .417 I i . f 1 'S -ffs 114 Volleyball -cum, , 0 543 .f........,.,, as Q' , At, 'ff'-wt . 4 , f s ,' .. - '2 4 f , .I 9 'l fe if 1 'I ina gf Nu -wx' 'N 1.- s i hhnx 4. The Lady Rams finished with 18 points, behind West Virginia Wesleyan with 28 points, and the University of Charles- ton with 25 points. Regular season wins included victories over Fairmont State College, West Virginia Tech and UMBC. ln the Tournament all of Shepherd's players reached the semifinals with Kim Cowden reaching the finals in singles play. In doubles, all the Shepherd 116 Women's Tennis -i 'I .lf-.ff 'l'-' ix , teams reached the semifinals but were defeated before reaching the finals. Coach Roger Parker was pleased with the results and summed up the reason: With losing half of our second place team from last year and gaining many new players, I felt third place was good. Next year we will be without our two top players fNumber one Pam Pierce and number two Kitty Thorntonl because of graduation. We will be looking for new talent. With returning members of the 1979 team plus the new talent, the 1980 Lady Ram Tennis Team should continue a successful tradition. With a 7-5 season record, the Ram netters went into the WVIAC Tournament in Charleston with high hopes. The team did not achieve its goal, but did finish a very respectable third in the conference. The highlight of the 1980 tennis season at Shepherd was the fact that Number One seed john Koepke won the 111 seed Championship at the conference playoff. Many starters were returning from the 1979 team and the squad gained valuable experience and preparation from an early season trip to South Carolina for four games. However, the season started slowly for the Rams. Early in the season the squad's record was only 1-7. The Rams then began a dramatic turnaround to win seven of nine games. The highlight of this streak was a 5-4 final inning victory over 1979 Conference Champion West Virginia State. Continuing their winning ways, the Rams finished 1980 with a very solid 14-11 mark overall and a fine 11-5 tally in conference play. Some of the outstanding performers for the Rams in 1980 were Daryl Grove, who batted .346, Bobby jones, Steve and David Diehl, and Mike johns with a 4-0 pitching mark.
