There were moments of frustration as well as fruition. The Rams were represented in IO different sports and every member of these teams will point to his peaks and valleys if asked to review the sea- son. ln football. Coach Barr's troops got off to their fastest start in years. And just as everyone was talking about the prospective foe in the Coal Bowl. there arose a rumor that was later iustif fied. There would be no trip to the WVC chant' pionship or any other playoff berth for that matter. The reason: Shepherd had unknowingly played three games. all of which it had won. with an ineligible player. At that moment. the Rams were on the verge of returning to their fifth-place ranking in the NAIA as they were ranked in the the first poll of l977 at the ninth slot. For the rest of the season, there would be no ranking or hopes of a NAIA playoff berth. How- ever, instead of laying down and feeling sorry for themselves. the Rams showed their true character. Undaunted by this setback. Barr inspired the team to a sparkling 9-I mark. which would have been close enough to get the Rams into the Coal Bowl, but instead. it was the W. Va. Wesleyan Bobcats who represented the conference's Northern Division. Standout performers Gregg Warfield. Matt Long and Larry Salley anchored the team and were named to the WVlAC's first team. lneligibility also struck down Coach Harry Young's harriers in even a worse way. For the first time. the running Rams did not finish a season as the ineligibility bug struck two members from the team. Consequently the team did not have enough members to com- pete following the eligibility rulings. The women's tennis team under Coach Roger Parker. had a considerably successful fall as it compiled a 7,2 regular season mark and a third-place finish in the WVIAA tournament held in Charleston. Pam Pierce performed well in conference com- petition as did teammates Sally Warther and Kitty Thornton. Each was better than .500 against respective competitors. The lady Ram cagers had their share of ups and downs as they finished below the even mark again. Despite losing by some rather large margins the Rams won a few themselves by the runaway route. Mindy Barons and June Eggleton were the stale warts of Coach Anne Jones' youthful basketball squad as each averaged well into double fig- ures. Bob Starkey's roundballers met with a little more success. The Rams returned to the JO-win plateau after a year's absence. Highlights of the season included wins over tough Wheel- ing and rival Fairmont State, at Fairmont no less. Although everyone contributed in his own way to this JO-win effort. no effort was more con- spicuous than that of Joe Spencer. The Gentle Giant led the nation in field goal percentage and landed a berth on the WVlAC's first team. 2 :I 135 Individual efforts paid oli for members of the Rams' swimming team. which competed against men's teams with a co-ed Iineeup. lxim Davis. Pete McCloskey and Bart Nelson all qualified to compete on the national level. The swimmers were out-manned during most of their meets but most of their meets were against larger schools and reputed swim' ming powers. The Rams are lust a few rip tides away from being on top of things in the near future. Women's volleyball at Shepherd enloyed its share of success. The lady netters more than held their own against some tough outfoffstate competition. A third place finish in the WVIAA competition at Buckhannon was icing on the cake for the Shepherd spikers, Among the sounds of spring were cracks of volf leys, bats. clubs and even football helmets as the gridiron team prepped for the l978 season. Kurt Brown. Stock Wright and John lxopeke led the way for Parker's men netters as they de- fended their conference championship and worked their way to another fine finish. . jvtgmf 4 , A-A , The booming bats of Doug Higgins and Dave Hearn marked a resurgence in baseball lor Shepherd as the Rams doubled their win total of a year ago. Higgins smashed school, con- ference and NAIA marks during his hitting spree against Glenville State. Hearn led the team in taters and he personally pelted Shaw Hall with three of them. The Shepherd golfers finished with a winning slate under the direction of Coach Ed Finch- man. Paced by the Zaleski brothers lBlll and Joe! the Rams finished in the top of the come petition in the Northern and Southern Regionals as well as the conference tournament. Under Coach Sherry Brown, the Rams' women softball team did its share of pounding. too. Cheryl Roberts, Donna Miller and Trish Egbers sparked the Rams at the plate as well as the mound. To coin a phrase. Shepherd athletes each had hisjher thrill of victory and agony of defeat. Some more than others. That's what kind of year it was for Shepherd athletics. ,,,x,. More than half the starters from the previous year's squad re- turned for another shot at the cham- pionship and several of the recruits had earned other starter slots be- cause of their performances during the demanding preseason workouts. The season opener indicated the Rams were powerful as ever as they dismantled the vsiting Frostburg Bob- cats. Fullback Gregg Warfield, en route to establishing a new seasonal scoring record, bulled over for two one-yard scoring plunges to give the Rams as early lead in the first half. The scoring was then out of the hands of the offense as it became mired in ll5 yards of penalties due to the inexperience of the young offen- E' 1' a li 3 'Liz 'K s ug vw But Untainted Character sive line. But before the half, Shep- herd's special teams and defense combined for three touchdowns. Steve Diehl ran back a punt 78 yards in his first college game while line- backers George Ferguson and Matt Long ran interceptions for scores as well. The Ram defense, which narrowly missed a shoutout. didn't do any scor- ing the next week in Buckhannon against Wesleyn but it did hold the Bobcats to a solitary field goal in the second quarter. Then Warfield's three-yard Scoot was enough to in- sure the Rams' second win. Everyone but Walter Barr was worried about the Rams' ability to score. The head mentor explained. We have a young line that just needs a little more time to work together. The opposition knows this and we've faced a lot of stunting. Freshman kicker C-:ary Sherman pulled the biggest stunt of all the next week as he split the uprights eith a 26-yard field goal with five se- conds left in a contest with Randolph Macon. The 25-22 decision over the visiting Yellow Jackets vaulted the Rams to a ninthplace ranking in the NAIA football poll. The Rams fell from the ranks of the unbeated the following week as they failed in a last-second comeback against nemesis Concord in the Civi- tan Bowl. The I3-7 loss to the confer- ence champions was the first time in IO years the Rams had dropped a Civi- tan contest. Besides losing its first conference game, Shepherd was hit with even a more startling and costly implica- tion. A routine investigation of all players grade transcripts revealed that one individual. a starter. was academically ineligible. Instead of hiding the fact very easily as most football factories would have done, the staff of Shepherd athletics decided to openly admit its fault. knowing full well it would af- fect the teams playoff chances. Conference commisioner Mike Mc- Glaughlin lauded Shepherd for its open treatment of the situation and the Rams, for using as ineligible player. were not allowed to partici- pate in any post-season play and had to offer forfeits to the three teams they had played before and beaten. The penalty eventually cost the Rams the Northern division title as Wesley- an took advantage of the situation to win the crown. At this point Shepherd had something more important to play for---pride and self respect. f -'i,. 1 J. 2'::.7:.-ff Q 9 i977 EOOTBALL RESULTS EROSTBURG STATE W.VA. Four Duke turnovers paved the way for a touchdown by Warfield and a field goal by Sherman. Barr said at the time, After the past week, we had to do something to prove to our- selves. Now we have to see if we can sustain our pride for the rest of the year. The offense put it together as the Rams came on relentlessly dispose of W. Va. Tech. Down I4-O at the end of the first quarter. Golden Bears were all but beaten by Warfields three touchdowns despite a comeback ef- fort in the final quarter. The 24-20 win was well-deserved after the of- fensive line made its best showing ever by opening up trucking lanes for Warfield, Bucky Black and Wayne Wilson. Warfield and Sherman combined to do all the scoring while the Matt Long led defensive corps shut down the airways in a I7-6 over West Liberty. Warfield collected two more touch- downs but Wilson and Kenny Russell provided two of the more exciting moments as they ripped off a 43-yard run and 89-yard return respectively Since the Rams couldn't appear in the Coal Bowl. they played the role of spoiler the next week as they pre- vente Salem from appearing in the post-season event by downing the Tigers I7-3. Again it was the Warfield- Sherman combination propelled Shep- herd offensively. ln the season finale, the Rams breezed to a 26-O decision over Salisbury State. Warfield scored his I4th and l5th touchdowns to set a new school mark during the contest. The burly fullback, along with Long and Larry Salley landed spots on the All-Confer- ence first team Long and defensive Mike Daye, who performed solidly at his noseguard slot. as well as offensive seniors Jim MacFarlane. Jerry Combs and Black hung up their cleats for the last time as Shepherd Players. For Barr and him team, it wasn't a season to win trophies, but instead to show themselves and others their sterling character. va. ifwluln- , f.-M' 1-...,,,g 'i1 '.A?, .4s -M.. 4 if ,2 ls: ' 4 fx J an f.,.aa I, ,., W-., 66 Football Ma wr ' 2 Q, ii :AA 4, 4, ,Q f, .uni ' .' I have a iob for you. With these words. three of Holly- wood's most beautiful women start chasing and blasting away bad guys. However, Coach Roger Parker guid- ed a group of ladies that served up some pretty hard shots themselves against the bad guys like Morris Har- vey, Fairmont State and Mt. St. Mary's. Shepherds lady netters opened with a tough opponent, WVU, at Morgan- town. The Mountaineers won 5-2 de- spite Pam Pierce's upset of their number one seed. Barb Cusick by the scores of 6-2 and 7-5. The lasses of the lob then proceeded to take their next five matches in a row. During this stretch, hardly any- one dropped a singles match. In fact, the Rams only lost one out of 30. Parker summed up this team's efforts r, x during this streak. Right now we are playing the kind of tennis we are ca- pable of. If the girls can stay consis- tently on top in the early part of their matches. they shouIdn't have too much trouble bettering last year's record. Pierce. the team's top winner. was backed by the solid showings of Sally Warther, the number two seed and Kitty Thornton at the number three slot. Both players averaged a high amount of victories between them. Fourth seeded Brenda Hummer turn- ed in a steady performance as did freshman Robin Shaffer at the number five spot. This duo was especially tough in doubles competition. Against Fairmont, they combined for a 6-3, 6-O topping of their Falcon counter- parts. Trudy Anders and Jo Ann Heckman shared the duties of the sixth slot, when it was necessary. They each took turns teaming with Warther to form another potent doubles combin- ation. After a string-snapping loss, the Rams bounced back with wins over West Virginia Wesleyan and UMBC. They entered the WVIAA tourney in Char- leston with a 4-I conference mark. As expected, Marshall and WVU, the long-time powerhouses, dominated the playoff results, but the Rams fin- ished right on the heels of the bigger schools on the strong showings of Pierce, Warther and Shaffer against some of the smaller schools. With this squad intact during the fall of '78, Parker's Angels could very well wing their way to the top. l if ,M-2 if fy is - ji '17 i Mx g ,f V, , 4, fm me y y ra' X - .6 ' If ng ,K 1 A. g ' :S-3, , - ' I I ' ' H K 'F' f I , f kg' lil' 3? f 529 A , A x 4 ' ,' Z -1 F - . g,w?..v4i 5' 12 ff Q.:- ncns Tennis 1 l 1 9 ,g .,.,..,.. There were high spots like the 75-'57 triumph over con- ference rival, Fairmont State, and then there were the low dips like the whip- ping at the hands of Shippensburg. No matter what the result, coach Anne Jones' squad kept collective chin Call the better to sink a few jumpers upb. The lady Rams never lost more than two in a row and on several occasions. they bounced back to win big after a disheartening loss. Senior sharpshooter Mindy Barrons paced the team's efforts as she continually led the team in scoring. When she was off, players like Peachy Meadows and Cindy Stewart picked up the slack with double digit performances. Cheryl Roberts and June Eggleton con- trolled the lanes and boards with their defense and rebounding and once in a while the duo chipped in with leading scorer honors. With a strong nucleus returning in the fall. Shepherds lady cagers should have little trouble following the bouncing but elusive ball of success. . Ng?'f5w4fm,,, ' -, M ti' , if mf 4' .. y , K, M . With another young squad to work with. Starkey returned to fa- milar 2O-win mark. The season started off with a bril- lant showing in the Shepherd Tip-off Tournament. After easing past Shen- andoah College. the Rams polished off Concord in the championship contest. Larry Cain, who hit in double figures both nights was named the tourney's most valuable player and was sel- ected to be on the all-tournament squad along with teammates Buttons Walker and Al Middleton. However, in their first road and con- ference encounter. the Rams strag- gered away from a hot Salem team. the victims of a 95-85 pasting. Big Joe Spencer, in a role he would per- form all season long, was the leading scorer with I7 points. Gentle Joe sparked the Rams to a 89-74 conquest of Salisbury with 28 points and I5 re- bounds. Other early season high- lights included a IO4-85 waltz over D S E and a II7-87 decision over Donini- can College of New York in the first round of the Shepherd Classic. The Rams. however dropped the cham- pionship tilt of the tournament to Franklin S Marshall by a Ill-llO count as the visitors hit a jump shot at the buzzer. The Rams got back on the track and also scored again over the century mark by downing South eastern ll2- 87. Spencer netted 28 points and snatched 2l rebounds to pace the win- ners. With subs Walker. John Koepke and Craig Battle scoring in double fig- ures, the Rams downed West Li- berty IOOS2. The Blue and Gold suf- fered a setback of a different kind over the holiday break as farmer Shepherd great Dave Russell, was killed in a car wreck in Orthez. France. Donning black stripes in me- mory, the Rams outlasted Wheeling 78-72 and Spencer in the meantime was leading the nation in field goal percentage with a 7I percent clip. Shepherd lost another at the buzzer contest as visiting nemesis. Fairmont State. nipped the Rams 78-77 on Ke- vin Claudio's 25 footer with a few se- conds remaining. Let by a hot John Koepke, the Rams reebounded from the disheartening setback to down visiting W. Va. Teck 8l-74. Koepke, a first year player, pumped in I8 points. Bluefield handed the Rams their se- cond straight Ioss before Shepherd Straightened itself out with an 83-82 overtime win over Morris Harvey, who had beaten Pitt in its season opener. The Rams at the time were ranked lOth in the nation in offense and they used that offense to drop D S E by a score of 76-63. West Virginia Wesleyan handed Shepherd its fourth buzzer loss as John Bates swished a baseline jumper at the horn to give the cats a 68-67 win. The definite peak of the season was the upset of Fairmont State at Fair- mont as Spencer hit a layup with six seconds left to ice a 63-62 triumph. Spencer let all scorers with 20 points and he was followed by Koepke with I6. Starkey commented afterwards, This is the most satisfying win this season Next came wins over Wheeling and Salem as the Rams attempted to climb past Wesleyan into second place in the conference. The Rams rode a seven-game winning streak in- to the conference finals in Charles- ton, where they were to meet Morris Harvey in the first round. Starkey, looking ahead as well as the season post stated, anything we get from here on out is just icing on the cake. And he was right. No one had expected Shepherd with such a youthfull lineup to finish as high as it did. Unfortunately the Rams had no icing on the cake as the Eagles got revenge in form of a 7I-64 decision over the Shepherd quintet. Spencer, in his final game as a Ram, turned in one of his memorable per- formances as he started the game with a slam dunk, shot ll for ll from the field and let all scorers with 24 points. Fittingly, he was named to the conference's first Team. With only Spencer departing, the Rams should be respectable for a long time to come calling it a new era v - .'- .0 7 IS l 1 , 'l?,3.a5A Q rs . He was completely dedicated to the task of becoming the best basketball player humanly possible. The thoughts of head coach Bob Starkey well reflect the feelings of others who knew Dave Russell. Without a doubt. Russell was synono- mous with success at Shepherd. His efforts on the court left observers in awe on several occasions. As Shep- herd's most prolific scorer. the 24-year-old Hagerstown native was named to the West Virginia Confer- ence's All-Star team three years in a row. On his way to becoming Shepherd's only All-American basketball player, Russell averaged 25.6 points a con- test and amassed 2.76l points during his four-year stint with the Rams. He still stands as the school's all-time leading scorer and holds no less than ll Shepherd basketball records. Russell was not content to rest upon these laurels. He still had to achieve his life's dream - to play profession- al basketball. Not many of us even think of attempting to gain our ut- most ambitions. but to Russell it was second nature. On the threshold of his professional aspiration, Russell was described by Starkey as always being a winner. He'll make it. There's no one who works harder than Dave. I have confidence in his desire for self-excellence the head mentor mused. His first chance came with the Mil- waukee Bucks. Wayne Embry. gener- al manager of the team commented Russell was one of the best-looking big men in camp. Later the 6-8 pro- duct of St. Maria Goretti High School was among the final few to be cut by the NBA club. Llndaunted. Russell was determined to latch on with a pro squad and he displayed his talents in tryouts with the ABA's Baltimore Claws before his stint with several summer league teams. He attended countless tryout camps in months afterwards. but his biggest drawback according to his agent Don Cronson. was not coming from a big college. Russell then received a call from the European pro league and he signed with the San Sebastian Dicos and to the surprise of no one. he was one of the team's top players. averaging over SO points. After failing in his bid again to play pro in America, Russell then signed with the Orthez, France pro squad. He made another excel- lent impression on pro scouts with his 25-point average. On December 28, l977, Dave Russell was killed in a car wreck in Orthez. The man. the player, the person - will not be easily forgotten. - Terry L. Cornwell X W X. Earle H. Lightner. Jr. was a fine indivi- dual. He impressed people with his easy-going manner. friendliness and devotion to God and family. He loved sports and those associated with him appreciated this fact. As an official of almost 30 years. he served Shepherd College and the sur- rounding area by conducting clinics and officiating baseball, basketball and football games on all levels of competition. He also was an active leader of the Eastern Panhandle Offi- cials Association. Lightner was also bestowed the honor of being inducted into the Na- tional Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield. Mass. Lightner stands out in terms of an athletic leader not only because of his ability, but for the professional atti- tude that reflected his patience, ref spect and good sportsmanship. ln a demanding, competitive and sometimes fickle sports world, Earle Lightner was the epitome of the word respect, We dedicate this section to him. - Gwen Mauch Splashing Success A funny thing happened to Kim Davis on her way to the nationals. Davis, a senior from Catonsville, Md., quali- fied for a trip to Brenau College in Gainsville.C1a. by winning the 5Oyard breaststroke in 33.7 seconds. How- ever after that record-breaking performance in Washington, D.C.. the swift senior swimmer had to com- pete with the men's team because three members of mens' team be- came ineligible. Swimming Coach Rick Gibson utilized Davis' talents to make the Shepherd mens' team even more competitive. QL Sw: nming X V7 Q ,.,, 2' W C ' L, . '-Q' .... ' nf ?.. - 'lbw' K. His l977 Ram net- ters made it all the way to Kansas City. However his i978 squad could only finish second in the conference behind West Liberty. Number one Kurt Brown and number two man Stock Wright did qualify for post-season competition on an indivi- dual basis in both singles and dou- bles as this tennis tandem was un- beatable through most of the season as well as the conference tournament. Brown, who recorded a I5-4 singles. Mcn's Tenn: Slate, excelled in the conference tourney. Wright, who finished with a sparkling I8-I mark, did likewise. Parker will be the first to point out that it was a team effort that got the Rams as far as they went. Solid play from John Koepke U5-45 and David Wells CIS-65 helped pace the Shepherd netters to a I5-4 regular season re- cord. Koepke and David Gray teamed to make a formidable doubles pairing as they won nearly as much as their firstseeded teammates. The Rams, with everyone returning, could be Kansas City boun again. As if Harry Young didn't have enough problems with the inexperience of his club. the Ram harriers were cut short by the ineligibility bug. A third of the way into the season, it was discovered that several mem- bers of the team were academically ineligible. Thus the cross country team was depleted and unable to compete with the proper amount of runners. According to Young, the preseason was ominous and just a preview of what was to occur later in the sea- son. We expected to have I9 runners out in the first place, but only slightly more then half actually showed up for workouts' the head mentor ex- plained. 78 Lross Country v e Nowhere To Go But Up ,E ' '-we .uk 6 fd 'ff K . The scrappy soph finished first in the meet with Lin- coln and second in the opener against George Mason. But if the sport is golf. it's a different proposi- tion entirely. Coach Ed Fincham's linksmen came off one of its better campaigns as the Rams finished with a 7-3 record in match play. The Rams. paced by the Zaleski brothers, gave conference champ Glenville State a run for the money before fading in the final rounds. Bill Zaleski. a contender for the All- Conference squad, was the Ram's consistent low medalist all year. The sharp shooting sophomore averaged in the mid-seventies and his best showing was a 74 at the Southern Re- gionals in Pipestem. W.Va. His brother Joe averaged in the high 70's at the number two spot. Keith Kave, Larry Lehew, Don Drew. and David Gray were others who con- tributed to the success of Shepherd. After his team's showing in Canaan Valley, Fincham has every right to boast that his team had a below-par season. IOO Higgins' Hammerers Mashed Some Taters HIGGINS. HAMMERERS MASHED SOME TATERS Although the results didn't quite meet with the expectations of coach Mike Jacobs. Shepherd's baseball team had its share of thrilling mo- ments. With only four experienced players returning, Jacobs felt the newcomers that comprised the FGSI of the squad could put the Rams in the thick of things in the WVlAC's southern divi sion race. Some of the newcomers did exceed- ingly well, but during the course of the long schedule, the pace slack- ened and the Rams dropped out of contention for a post-season playoff berth. The inexperience hurt the team in many ways. For example the Rams lost eight onerun decisions. The most frustrating of these narrow losses was doubleheader defeat at the hands of Eastern Mennonite, I2-II and IO-9, despite the hitting of freshmen Steve Diehl. This would be pro clobbered three home runs, including two in the same inning, and knocked in seven runs. It went for naught as the Rams, pitch- ing corps failed to silence the EMC bats. Highlights of the season incuded doubleheader sweeps of Concord and Alderson-Broaddus. Diehl. who led the team with a 387 average for the year, was hitting at a near SOO clip at this time. Ricky Waugh, who looked shaky in the opener against Lynchburg, came on to be the team's most successful hurler. He was backed by starter-re- liever Gary Punk Farley, who turned in a few impressive mound stints. Designated hitter Dave Hearn led the team with seven home runs. in- cluding some shots over and on Shaw HaII.' He, like the afore - mentioned first-year players, contributed in part to Shepherd's best season in re- cent years. However the real story and inspira- tion of the l978 Rams baseball team was senior Doug Higgins. In true poetic fashion. Higgins' last appearance with the Rams result- ed in a personally satisfying explo- sion in light of all the frustrating af- ternoons he spent with the Rams. The Williamsport, Md. native set a world baseball record with a five-for - five performance against Glenville. He clouted four home runs, which included a solo shot, a two run blow, a three-run round-tripper and as Hig- ggins would put it, 'a grand tater. The lanky slugger also poked a two- run triple, scored four times and knocked in an amazing I2 runs. It was the most phenomenonal indi- vidual effort I've ever seen, commen- ed Jacobs afterwards. Higgins, who led the team in doubles, triples and RBI's, stated, I couldn't believe it. I wanted to sit on one of the bases for a while and just enjoy it. For Higgins and all who have fol- lowed Shepherd baseball, batting orgy was a statement of continuing ef- forts no matter what the conse- quences. f 1 f 'jp- Bf- 1 I, j Iggy 5 fy ,, 74 is 25 my ' Li. fn., , t., nw A ffP,. vuige-w'.'gfrw,...v:'-1-s - -. pw... State officials in Charleston announced today that effective August 29. Shepherd College will have to re-apply for funds used for college beautification. This announcement comes about after members of the state Board of Regents. en- gaged in a tour of all state colleges and univer- stties on April 28, discovered a statue depict- ing a typical college student perched atop the wall at the southern end of the football field. The statue. which represents a student con- suming alcoholtc beverages, was labeled filthy and disgusting by members of the Re- gents entourage. According to Dr. James Butcher. college presi- dent. the statue was commissioned by a pro- tninent local artist, who promised that the fin- ished project would reflect contemporary col- lege values. Butcher notes that college offi- cials have no explanation as to how the statue. which was originally crated and stored in the maintenance building. was placed atop the wall. The sculpture, part of a beauttficatior grant. was commissioned last January after theives armed with a jack-hammer and pickups truck made off with a ram statue which hac previously over looked the football field. t l l l l t l l 5 y, R lt lt at R, lt sc id . Rumors that the building may be sold to a prominent slumlord remain completely unfounded at this time, according to Chris Vaughn, head resident of Boteler Hall. Local police and college security per- sonnel are still trying to learn the identity of a student who in early April was engaged in selling Boteler Hall through the Haywood Agency. Inc., a real estate brokerage firm. Informed sources report that the su- spect, believed to be a sophomore bu- siness major, was also responsible for buying full-page ads in real estate trade journals offering a large. three-story building. sub-divided ap- partments, with private tennis court and large parking area. for approxi- mately 5200,000. H. G. Snelling, security chief for She- pherd College noted that after con- sulting representatives of the real es- tate firm, we have compiled a de- scription of the suspect, although we have no firm leads as of yet. Reports that boredom on behalf of Boteler Hall House Council resulted in the building being put up for grabs are untrue, notes Chris Vaughn, head resident of Boteler Hall. presidential aids 5 '5- J fs.---'N We're just friends. replies S.G.A. president John Miller in response to a photo which ap- peared in a Martinsburg newspaper. That photo accompanied a story which questions Miller's continous female escorts. who have been dubbed the Presidential Aids . In a statement released earlier this week, Student Government president John Miller flatly denies allega- tions that, as one Martinsburg paper phrased it, Shepherd's S.G.A. Presi- dent literally pays women to follow him around. Miller termed such reporting slan- derous, libelous. and just plain un- true. Afterall, these women are my friends. I don't have to pay them. When asked How MANY friends he has, Miller replied, Almost 2500. When questioned about his forth- coming biography. All the Presi- dent's Women , Miller notes that the book deals with his position as S.G.A. President in an entirely different scope. administrator jailed 'S-J' Dr. Earl Henderson, a victim of the new campus anti-parking regulation. is shown in prison garb as part of a work-gang at the college. The college expects delivery ol 46 new tow trucks next week, which will help to beef-up the regulation aimed at stupid drivers . Shepherd College's tough new anti - parking law went into effect yester- day. with security personnel arrest- ing 437 violators and towing a record 560 vehicles off campus to a nearby junkyard. Dr. Earl Henderson was allegedly one of those arrested for failure to have a valid campus parking permit. Hender- son was escorted away by campus security officers and later placed in Berkeley County Jail. However. according to informed sources, Henderson will be able to re- turn to his job as part of a work-gang composed of college violaters cur- rently being held in the detention center. Under the new campus parking or- dinance. violators will forfeit owner- ship of their vehicles, which will then be sold at public sale for benefit of the college.
