M431 Q Home Economies Club Student Senate Faces Several Dilemmas Mm On Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1975, President Marie Ballas presented her resignation to the Senate. After the text of her resignation was read the Senate was left stunned, but only for a few seconds. Upon its recovery from the totally unexpected shock the Senate gave Marie Ballas an unanimous vote of confidence. They refused to accept her resignation and instead asked Marie to stay on and try to work out the problems that existed between her and some undisclosed member for membersi, on the Execu tive Board. She had stated in her resignation that the lack of cooperation and an unified Executive Board kept her from being able to remain as the Student Senate President. After the vote she agreed to continue if the problems could be worked out, and did finish out the year as President. Six weeks later on Jan. 7, 1976, tafter Christmas vacation J, Vice President Joe Slater tendered his resignation. He cited as the reason for his resignation the problem be- tween himself and Senate President Marie Ballas: 'Ttheiri latent inability to cooperate and share mutual goals. Barry Mullane became the new Vice Presi- dent after Joe,s resignation. He served out the rest of the term, almost a full semester in length. Since then the fraternity has grown to 78 members, 23 of whom are currently active members. This year the members decided to revitialize and rejuvenate their fraternity by affiliating themselves with the international fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha. On February 28, 1976, the brothers of Psi Lambda Chi were initiated associate members of Lambda Chi Alpha. The formal initiation took place two months later on Sunday, April 25, and it was then that the brothers were installed as a colony of Lambda Chi Alpha. The new colony of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity celebrated with a banquet after the ritual ceremony of initiation. The Gettysburg College chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha conducted the ritual ceremony. All of Shepherd College congratulates the new brothers of Lambda Chi Alpha and wish them continued success in achieving their goal of obtaining a brother- hood relationship between members. 54 r. ra-if . .Q i Q , , IV- N in 3 S SX B ' Lambda Chi lpha ,XS S,- -s '?2Q LAMBDA CHl ALPHA MEMBERS: FRONT ROW: Tim Stoner, Todd Bolton, Pat Doyle, Charles Krzywieki, Tom Philbrick. This finish enabled the Lady Rams to qualify lor the Midwest Regionals. Competing at Dayton, Ohio against teams like Purdue, Michigan State, and Cleveland State, the Lady Rams were less than successful as they were eliminated without a win. The only losses were at the hands of non-conference opponents like Duquesne, Maryland and those teams encountered at the regionals. Things look promising lor next season. The Lady Rams will lose only captain, Gayle Legg, through graduationg and a state championship is definitely in reach. Coach Guilliams attests to that. Zindel-Manager Dr. Glenda Guilliams--Coach lg T l 1 I v I i I L n 1 Li FOOTBALL The arrival of a talented group of recruits and a new assistant coach signaled a drastic turnaround for Shepherd's football program. Coach Walter Barr commented on this group lwlore the season, This is the greatest group we ever had. l'hey want to play and they have the talent. Did they ever! Eleven freshmen started at one time or another for Shepherd as they paced the Rams to an amazing 8-3 season. Coach Mark McHale, a standout on the 1972 Rams' championship team, joined Barr's staff late last summer and instilled some of that championship spirit in this past season's squad. For a team that would win the second highest amount of games in one season in Shepherd's history, the Rams didnlt start that impressively. Defending champs, the Fairmont Falcons, visited Shepherd and came away with a 26-7 decision. Our cream of the crop recruits made the usual rookie mistakes by committing numerous turnovers and penalties. Still, the attitude was there. Barr stuck to his guns commenting, 1 still believe we have the talent and we're not giving up on anybody. The Rams proved him right over the next four games. The streak was started by a 28-0 victory over Frostburg in the Civitan Bowl. MVP Rick Kingsbury sparked the Rams' offense with 157 yards passing while Michael Day was the defensive MVP as he made 10 tackles. Following a 21-14 decision over West Virginia Wesleyan, the Rams defeated perennial powerhouse Randolph Macon 16-14. lt was a very satisfying victory and more and more supportersjumped on the Rams' bandwagon. The taming of the Concord Mountain Lions was the next task at hand. Kingsbury's field goals of 49 and 35 yards was the difference in 20-14 homecoming victory. Madison took advantage of its Astro-turf field and stopped a dramatic Ram drive in the closing second to preserve a 13-7 win. This is a great group of kids. 1'm proud of the way they're playingf' Barr had reason to believe so following a fine defensive effort by his Rams in stifling West Virginia Tech 7-0. The defense did it again with the help of some wet weather as it defiated West Liberty's air machine 24-14. Shepherd returned home to blast Bluefield 30-8 and won in similar fashion the next week by trouncing Bridgewater 42-13. The stage was set for the showdown with unbeaten division leader, the Salem Tigers. Dreams ofa trip to the Shrine Bowl were shattered as Rams bowed in the season finale 27-0. Still, the Rams were well- deserving owners of an 8-3 record and the runnerup sport in the W.V.l.A.C.'s northern division - a far cry from the previous season's last place 2-9 finish. Senior mainstays Tony Blaha. Ted Gillette fall-conference guardj, Steve Holmes, Dave Kolb and Craig Reichenbach will be missed next season as the Rams, young and talented, will contend for the conference crown. 156 . gf- my 1-O :Selig 'lux bv cm-'Q' I gQ i, ?1fl. ef ix gu' ,, , .Lf L 4454: H .49,, ' W J ' 'f -we . 3 1, k ,qgaf ., .v, ,N ,Q A git nw' raw Qi ' f 'vwiii na., , 4: im? mzissgf rm W' ff-'ffl ,,-av. 47 :ff Y I AIA 157 h. ,. ,... .1 ,, W 4' if :'. ,Q 7, i5a?e?Qr n,,. f s9'1K? SPORTS ILLUSTRATED acknow- ledged its outstanding record. Fans packed field houses and gyms to see it. Everyone everywhere had something to say about our Rams, basketball team. Under coach Bob Starkey, who finished third in the West Virginia coaches balloting, the 1975-76 edition of this power- house ofthe Panhandle finished 33-3, the most victories by any college this past season. The Rams improved their record for the eighth straight year on their way to a tenth place ranking by the Associated Press. The NAIA felt a little different as it ranked the Rams seventh in its listing of the nation's top teams. In winning 20 or more games for the fourth consecu- tive season, the Rams finished second in the W.V.l.A.C. behind the nationis numero uno, Fairmont State. It was the third straight runnerup spot for the Rams, who broke I9 Shepherd basketball records during its most recent campaign. Our Rams were the champions of the NCAA's Division Three South Atlantic Region. This enabled them to pursue the Division Three title. They were beaten, however, by the eventual winner, Scranton University. Consider then, the Rams' three losses came against the two top small college powers. The cagers, who ranked near the top of college listings in offense and winning margin, won enough tournament gold to start their own Fort Knox. First came the blitzing of Waterloo, the Canadian national champs and then the Rams topped Wilfred-Laurier University to win the Canadian invitational tourney. The next stop for Shepherd's trophy trail was the Winchester Civitan Classic. The Rams nipped Mansfield 90-88 on Rodney Sewell'sjumper at the final buzzer. Sewell, a member of Shepherd's 2000 point club, was named Civitan MVP. The Rams only played uso-so basketball according to Starkey, but they still prevailed over Virginia Union to defend their Civitan title. Shepherd also recaptured its own invitational by outclassing Washington College and Salem at the Martinsburg field house. It was about this time the Rams began to gain national recognition. The Rams moved to 12th in the NAIA poll after beating Wheeling for their 20th victory. The nation's leading scorer, Archie Talley, and the Salem Tigers were no match for the Rams despite 45 points by Talley. The four-game road trip included a showdown with arch rival, Fairmont State. Joe Retton's Falcons extended their jinx over Shepherd as they won 93-86. The Rams didn't let the loss derail them as they defeated Bluefield and returned home with a 23-I record and a seventh place ranking in the NAIA. Closing out their regular season with wins over D8LE and Strayer, the Rams prepared for the conference tourney. A cold epidemic didn't prevent them from taking victories in the preliminary rounds from West Liberty, Alderson-Broaddus and Concord. Guess who waited ahead in the final? None other than Fairmont, which successfully defended its conference crown. Sewell, the second-leading scorer in the conference, and Mike Philippi, the Rams' top assists man. were named to the all-tourney team. The great season was far from over as the Rams traveled to New Jersey to capture a regional champion- ship by defeating host Monmouth College 79-71. Powerful Scranton ended the season lor Shepherd by winning on its home court. Only better things lie ahead for our lantastic Rams. We'll miss super seniors Larry Boomer and Chip Reklis, who played vital parts in the best season ever known to Shepherd College. That's what the women's swimming team was made of. The Lady Rams, en route to a 6-2 season, shattered well over a dozen of Shepherd women's swim records. Most prominent among these record smashers was Kim Davis. The speedy sophomore rewrote the Shepherd records in the medley, freestyle and breaststroke events and her perfor- mance in the W.V.l.A.C. meet qualified her for a berth in the NAIA regionals. ln the state meet, coach Nancy Elkins' aquatic lasses finished second. The ladies did a magnificent job . . . all that could be expected according to Elkins. And like most of Shepherd's women's teams, the prospects only look more promising, as the roster is filled with prep swimmers. Besides impressive victories over St. Mary's, Western Maryland and Howard University, the Ram swimmers broke numerous records on the way to a berth in the W.V.I.A.C. tourney at West Virginia University. Senior Jerry Rhodes, a co-captain with Pete McCloskey, was the team's leading scorer and record breaker. Event marks owned by Rhodes include the 200-yard free style medley, the 200-yard individual medley and the 500-yard freestyle. Showing his versatility as a distance swimmer, Jerry also held the old mark in the 1000-yard medley. The new mark is held by McCloskey. He also set new Shepherd records in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events. Coach Erwin Fieger expects Pete really improveda' next season and indicates McCloskey may set new marks by the score. The Rams were far from a two-man team, however, as they were dependent upon performers like Jim Jones. Jim provided excellent showings in all diving events and is a real competitorn according to Fieger. Jeff Sager did his thing in the 200-yard backstroke and was a member of the Rams' 400-yard relay team. Senior Neil Laggan provided depth in the 500-yard freestyle while the other senior member of the team, Dean Koontz, anchored Shepherd's strong relay quartet. These seniors, along with Rhodes will be sorely missed next season. Fieger commented, these guys were dedicated and that's what you need to be successful in anything you do. According to coaches Jesse Riggleman and Branson Brown, uthe boysjust couldnlt put their hitting, fielding and pitching together long enough for one or two good games. The definite highlight of the Shepherd season was Doug Hufferis 1-0 shutout of University ofPittsburgh at Johnstown. The sopho- more lefty's two hitter was won by a George Inscore double. The Rams will lose four seniors: outfielders Larry Laing and Bill Fourham, plus infielders Inscore and Moe Kuhn. These players contributed a lot of hustle and desirel' to the Rams' efforts, according to Riggleman. Like most other Shepherd sports, the nucleus of this team being a host of young players. Most of them will fill the battery and infield spots. With the loss of Laing and Fourham, the outfield positions may be the hardest to fill. Top returnees include catcher Doug Higgins, who Brown has labeled as a definite pro prospect who can hit well and has all the tools to make itf' Higgins provided most of the Rams' offense with his extra base hits including a mammoth home run against Oneonta that landed on top of Shaw Hall. Pitching should be in the dependable hands of Huffer, Mark Sager and Marc Arvon. Each one has the potential to become a consistent winner for the Gold and Blue. Handling the infield chores will be the slick keystone duo of Larry See and Chapman Slye. These two are the Rams, best all around threats as Riggleman attests that both can beat you with their bats, gloves and speed. The corner spots will be settled among many contenders as will the open outfield positions. Next season should see a definite change of fortune for Riggle- man's Rams. 182 I I IQ .: ,Q zb- 5, ,:,, Q www -' .22 .:' ,,q fr ,A , 'Q W r -K . . , ff 'iuif W . am M 1 s g -I ' ' ru 'HF 'ai 1' A 4 --isa - , . Here is where the Editor gets to thank everyone tand bore the reader to deathj, andfor let off steam. So keeping that tradition in mind, l'd like to give special thanks to two fantastic ladies. First, Betsy Mathews, who did a great job and gave her support thru a lot of dark hours during the Greek problem. Thanks and a deep love goes to Anna Blanchfield for working her tail off and helping to keep me laughing. Lest I forget, thanks also to Mark Smith. I promised you a lot of things about this yearbook and I think I have managed to keep all of them. I sincerely hope you like the book, and ifyou don't A that's too bad. The only people who really have the right to criticize the book are the staff members. I saw 8 people work and fight to make a good year- book for over 2,000 other kids. They never got any thanks and often they got a lot of hassles from people outside the staff. I frankly think they are great people. They did a damn good job, and I'm proud to have been able to work with them. But I've bored you enough. One last thing I have to say before I close. A special thanks and love to the man who stood by me through it all, who gave me strength when I thought I couldnlt fight any more who held me when I criedg and who shared my laughter. I don't need to name him, he knows who he is, and my friends know too. As Always. Nancy L.
