Catch the high-buttoned shoes! 'fix 5 'IQ is A BRIEF HISTGRY The original social organizations on Shepherd's campus date back to the turn of the century. At this time, two clubs were fgfmed - the Cicefonian and Parthenian Literary Societies. These clubs allowed both males and females and spent most of their time competing against one another, particularly in recitals and publications. They were intense rivals. A new sophistication swept the campus in the early twenties and the societies became old-fashioned. The new trend was toward clubs segregated by sex. The Willard Club was the leading women's club, and LlExtempo was the men's organization. At this time, membership in a club was mandatory if a student desired social status on campus. The thirties saw the beginnings of organizations which still exist at g'Shep',. In 1930, Phi Chi was formed, by 1945, it had become Sigma Sigma Sigma. The oldest fraternity is Tau Kappa Epsilon, which started out as Rumsey's Regiment and later became Zeta Sigma. The Phi Sigs came along in 1931 as Theta Sigma Chi, reaching national status in 1960. Still another club, the Teltrabs,,, originated during this period. In 1940, they were installed as the Chi chapter of Alpha Sigma Tau. This group has the longest national history of any social organization on campus. Things remained rather quiet until the late fifties, when Charles Printz inspired the formation of Sigma Beta Chi, a business club. ln 1961, it became Delta Sigma Pi. The sixties brought the beginnings of three groups on the campus: Theta Kappa Psi, now Delta Zeta, The Group , now Psi Lambda Chi, and Omega Psi Phi, the first black organization on the Shepherd campus. Two of the more popular groups presently on campus, Psi Beta Beta and Theta Xi, originated at the turn of the decade. ln 1969, the Panhandlers, an intramural group, decided to join a national fraternity without becoming a local first. By 1972 they had become the Gamma Alpha chapter of Theta Xi. Psi Beta Beta also started as an intramural team, the Youmacs, however, they decided to remain local and llike the Psi Lambda Chi before them, became the Alpha chapter of their own newly + created group. The newest social organization at Shepherd is Phi Gamma Nu sorority. It was installed as the Beta Beta chapter in 1972 and is the first women's professional group on campus. What does the future hold? We need only look as far as the informal organization or intramural sections of this book to see possibilities for future recognized social organizations - or perhaps a new club will come along. 135 iii I IEE . . I hope you thoroughly enjoyed it. But more importantly, I hope that 25 years from now, you can Iook at it and enjoy it even more. Together with my staff, I have tried to bring you new things - color, a theme, a look at informal groups on campus, and for the first time ever, a sexually integrated sports section. It has been my pleasure to serve as this year's editor of the Cohongoroota. I would like to thank all the people who helped make it what it is. As I leave Shepherd, I would like to leave this book as my gift to the students and staff in appreciation of four great years that I will never forget. Truly yours, Iyar, Doug Cole Editor-in-Chief 1975 Cohongoroota P.S. My special thanks go to the following people, without whose help there would be no I975 book: Yancy Overby, Mark Smith, Dan Nicol, Edna Garrison, Jeff Carr, John Mofield, Rick Gano, Billy Ray Dunn, Dave Newlin, Punkin Malone, Kathy DeHaven, Bill Grantham, Kathy Wogan, Jim Speelman, AND Bret Decker.
