The final result of their outstanding efforts was a hard-earned 6-4 record. The season opened with an away game victory over West Virginia Wesleyan on September 8. The Bobcats fell before the advancing Rams with the score at 20-7. The victory over W. Va. Wesleyan inspired the team when the Rams came home on September 15 to take the sting out of the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets. With a score of 38-18, Shepherd beat the Maconeers for the first time after six straight defeats. At the annual Civitan Bowl game played in Martinsburg on the night of September 22, the Rams skunked Concord 40-0. Shepherd retained the Civitan trophy and Perry Hubbard and Ike Karavellas captured the most valuable player awards. The Rams received a painful sting from the powerful Baldwin-Wallace Yellow Jackets on September 29 in Cleveland, Ohio. The fighting Shepherd gridmen had to accept their first seasonal defeat with a score of 47-6. Victory returned with the Rams for Homecoming on October 6. In a close game Shepherd knocked the stuffing out of the W. Va. Tech Golden Bears for a 14-7 tally. Unfortunately the victory of Homecoming did not carry over to the game on October 13 against West Liberty. The Rams staged an exceptional battle against Liberty tthe team has been one of Shepherdis most persistent rivalsl, but Shepherd's second defeat came with a score of 33-10. Repeating the success of the Civitan Bowl, the Rams conquered Bluefield State 17-0 at home on October 20. With a near perfect score of40-7, Shepherd flooded the scoreboard in an away game at Bridgewater on October 27. Things were looking up for the Rams until they tackled the tough Salem team led by Jack Delloplaine. Though Shepherd was first on the board with a 27 yard field goal, Salem over-powered the Rams for a 21-3 victory. Though the team had lost the WVIAC title, they were still hoping to maintain a 7-3 record as they stormed the homefield against the Hampden-Sydney Tigers on Parents, Day, November 10. In a thrilling end of the season performance, the Rams displayed a little of everything. One of the games highlights was the 55 yard field goal booted by Rick Kingsbury to set a new conference record. With only 38 seconds to go the score was 14-13 in favor of the Tigers. With only four seconds left, Kingsbury attempted a field goal. All hopes ofvictory were shattered when the kick was partially blocked. The gun sounded to end the game and the season with a record of six wins against four hard-fought defeats. f , 45 4 P Jim Armel -75146, Roland Beauford 365, Steve Blackstone 17548, and Ike Karavellas 55733 a tough defense stops Macon. :,!,, .t. One of the most welcomed additions to the campus this year was the establishment of WSHC, the college educational radio station. After several years of planning and much effort on the part of Professor George Wilson and the admini- stration, the equipment was readied and on Oct. 25 the antenna was installed. The station operated by the students, broadcasts with ten watts power at 88.7 on the FM dial. The staff members are students interested in broad- casting. They are: Station Manager Bob Grissinger, Matt Kellam, Donna Edsall, Cathy Nichols, Darl Ferguson, Joe Papola, Bob Fleenor, Benton Miller, Mike Yurish, Jeff Harris, and Hoppy Kercheval. The first broadcast took place on December 12 and Shepherd has been listening ever since. 2 'mr Q0 N i , 1 4' ,,.,..wga-w D 971 ,x f' , f-my V v Y VY W ,,,,, V ,epi- - ,..,,,.- B i Z? v.,,. '! When asked to help produce the yearbook the majority are quick to say, f'Not I , but when told that the books are ready for distribution, they stampeded and demand their copy and proceed to criticize. Like the Little Red Hen, our staff has labored without credit nor much support from the campus. Faced with a cut budget, limited assistance, and a contract decreasing the size of the book, the staff compiled to the best of their ability an accurate and interesting account of the l973-74 term. Please consider these facts as you avail yourselves of the product of our efforts. We realize that, as always, you will have criticisms of this book. We ask that those of you who find fault will also find time to help correct those flaws in next years Cohongoroota. Everyone involved with the yearbook is a volunteer. You will receive little recognition or material compensation for your work, but you will at least have the satisfaction of knowing that you helped produce the kind of book you wanted. As Editors-in-Chief, we would like to extend a sincere thank-you to our staff as a whole, and a special thanks to the following for their extensive assistance without which we could not have produced the book we did.
