After a couple of years of planning and a lot of work on the part of Professor James Robertson, director of bands, in cooperation with other members ofthe faculty, staff and administration of the College, a new marching band has been christened, The Marching Rams. After funds were allotted and everything was approved, Robertson recruited musicians and selected a staff which included two drummajors, a librarian, and an equipment manager. He then selected and arranged the music and movements for the halftime programs and when classes started in August, he began rehears- als for the bandfs debut. Robertson v 1 . J, ,J V The Majorettes were organized by girls who were interested in form- ' ing a unit. They selected their own co-captains and made their own wa uniforms. They often practiced with the band on the field behind h ' . Robertson and Staff t e Library The Pom Pom Squad, like the Majorettes, organized themselves, made their uniforms, and often rehearsed by themselves using taped music. 74 Practice! Practice!! Practice! !! Practice! ! !! Practice! ! ! ! ! Practice!!!!!! Builds a GOOD band! As halftime approaches, the performers are a little nervous. Robertson delivers his last pep talk. The female announcer says, Marching Rams take the field! The Pom Pom Girls take off. The drums roll, the cymbals vibrate, a whistle blows, and suddenly like a huge machine, the musicians move their feet like well oiled pistons and race on to the field. It's SHOWTIME! In the twelve short minutes of half- time, the band presents a show that took hours, days, weeks, months, and even years to make possible. Let's hear it for the new MARCHING RAMS!!! 77 BRASS ENSEMBLE EUROPEAN TOUR From March 6 to March 21 of 1973, the Brass Ensemble of Shepherd College, accompanied by 27 students, faculty and staff members, and friends of the College, took a two week tour of the European Continent. The nine Ensemble members, from the entire group pictured above, who went, performed several concerts while abroad. Professor James Robertson, director of the Ensemble, originated and executed the plans for the trip. A total of 36 people took advantage of his labors and embarked upon the educational journey which took them to six countries. 5 1 i ll Prof. James Robertson ill Don't say 'good-bye', say 'CHEESE'! 78 Mrs. James Butcher and Mrs. Floyd Miller aboard the Transbus. Yr - ' Rams 56 Wesleyan 8 Coach Walter Barr and his Rams would be glad to play in the Civitan Bowl every week. Last year the Rams really put on a superb show by blasting a highly-touted Concord eleven, 46-7, before a big crowd at Cobourn leield and they were even more impressive in the eighth annual Civitan Bowl classic by walloping a veteran-manned West Virginia Wesleyan club 56-8. The Rams rolled up 377 yards offensively, recovered four fumbles, intercepted two passes and had Wesleyan at their mercy, 49-0, before the final quarter. Perry Hubbard, who took a screen pass from Mike Calhoun and raced 58 yards for a TD, was named the outstanding back while Steve Clarke, veteran tackle, personally set up one TD with a fumble recovery and was voted the outstanding lineman. Shepherd put Wesleyan in an early hole when frosh Larry Hersh got off a booming kick and Duane Calloway raced down field to fall on the ball at the Bobcats' seven-yard-line. Three plays later quarterback Terry Landis lost control of a pitchout and Butch Yurish recovered at Wesleyan's seven. In four plays it was Bob Pope going a yard for a TD through a big hole opened up by Mark Mcliale and Paul Wilmoth. The first of eight successful placements by Rick Sands made it 7-0. With Hubbard streaking 14 yards, behind the excellent blocking of Tom Neal and Ted Gillette, the Rams picked up three straight first downs late in the first stanza but finally had to go for a 47-yard field goal by Sands which was short. lfour plays later Lindell Smith blasted Lan- dis, forced him to fumble, and Larry Sidaway recovered for the Rams at the Shepherd 40. A 13-yard sprint by Hubbard, with Eddie Campbell and Larry Slade springing the trap, got the Rams rolling and quarterback Mike Calhoun hit Harry Deaner on a quick pop over the middle for nine more yards and Wesleyan piled on and got tagged with a major penalty, putting the ball at the Bobcats' seven. Two plays later Marty Ogle took a quick pitch from Calhoun and went four yards for the TD and Sands' placement made it 14-0. Wesleyan, forced to the air, soon found itself in trouble again as a pass by Landis bounced off a receiver and was quickly grabbed by Shepherd's Tim Stoner, who raced all the way to the Bobcats' three-yard-line before being forced out of bounds. Pope quickly smashed for the TD and Sands added the kick for a 21-0 lead. Wesleyan had the ball for only three plays, as Dennis Householder swarmed all over Landis, then recovered his fumble to put Shepherd at the Bobcats' 36. On the next play Calhoun's pass was inter- cepted by Tom Robertson. Wesleyan, suddenly breaking Hartloose for a 13-yard gainer and getting two completed passed by Landis, and aided by a 15-yard penalty on the Rams, countered with a march to Shepherd's 13. Two running plays got them nine yards, then a strong rush by Yurish forced Landis to hurry an incomplete pass and on fourth down Ron Combs nailed Hart for no gain and Shep- herd took over. Combs got into the act again early in the third period, deflecting a Landis pass and Wesleyan punted to Shepherd's 31. Seven plays later, on a perfectly executed screen, Calhoun passed out to Hubbard in the left flats and he was off to glory land with Wilmoth cutting down the last defender on a 58-yard touchdown play. Sands converted and it was 28-0. Wesleyan had the ball for only two plays, following the ensuing kickoff, and then lost it 136 again as Clarke jarred the ball loose from Landis and recovered the pigskin for the Rams at the Bobcats' 26. In nine plays, all on the ground, it was 35-0 as Pope, Calhoun and Mickey Miller took turns at picking up the yardage behind fine blocking. Pope took it over on a foot plunge and Sands added the extra point. After the next kickoff, Landis took to the air and suddenly found his pass picked off by Shepherds Bill Parsons, who returned it 28 yards for still another TD and Sands' kick made it 42-0. With Paul Brown nailing Landis for a two-yard loss on third down, Wesleyan was forced to punt again and Shepherd struck like lightning for still another TD. This time it came on a quick pitchout from Miller to Calloway, who streaked 57 yards down the sidelines for the TD and Sands added the kick to up the margin to 49-0. Wesleyan finally got on the scoreboard as Hart and Scott Jefferson broke loose for sev- eral gains and Hart went for the last 30 for the TD with 12:15 left in the final quarter. Lgndis ran for two extra points, making it 4 -8. Hubbard took the next kickoff and return- ed it 59 yards, nearly going all the way, but the Rams fumbled the ball away six plays later. With 3:42 remaining, Deaner returned a Wesleyan punt to the Bobcats' 25 and Miller promptly went 18 yards on a rollout to the 13 on the first play. A five-yard smash by Marshall Wilson, then after a loss, Miller rolled around right end for eight more yards and another first down. Two plays later Russ Ward plunged a yard for the TD and Sands added his final place- ment. Wesleyan, trying desperately to pass, was going backwards again, as time ran out. I BGWL 1i'r. Rolling up 31 points in the second half, the Rams defeated the Salem Tigers by a score of 31-17. The win gave the Rams a 5-0 Conference mark and their first West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion- ship since 1955. The scoring attack was led by the Rams fleet-footed Perry Hubbard and Conference rushing leader Bob Pope. The Rams one-two punch combined for a total of 266 yards rushing. The Rams received the opening kick-off and. after three running plays, were forced to punt. The Tigers took possession on their own 35-yard line and marched 60 yards to the Ram 12. The Rams held on three straight running plays so the Tigers had to settle for a field goal attempt. McConnell split the uprights and the Tigers took an early lead 3-0. During the remainder of the first half, the Rams moved the ball consistently, but fum- bles stopped their attack. Early in the second half, the Rams capped a 55-yard drive with a 30-yard field goal by Rick Sands. The kick tied the score at 3-3. Glen Cross recovered a fumble on the Salem 20-yard line to set up the next Ram score. Bob Pope finally rambled in from the two for the touchdown. Sands' point after touchdown was good and the Rams took the lead for the first time at 10-3. The Tigers came right back with a drive to the Ram 31-yard line. On fourth down and one yard to go, Delloplaine raced 31-yards for the six pointer. The kick was good and the score was tied 10-10. After an exchange of punts, a fumble recovery by Paul Brown set up the next Ram touchdown. Harry Deaner's diving catch in the end zone put the Rams back in the lead. Sands' extra point was good and the Rams led 17-10. After forcing the Tigers to punt, the Rams took possession of the football and drove 138 65-yards in 12 plays. The drive consumed six minutes and raised the Ram lead to 14 points. Bob Pope plunged the final yard for the score. Sands, point after touchdown was once again perfect and the score rose to 24-10. Rossi took the kick-off and ran it back to the Ram 48-yard line. Salem moved the ball deep into Ram territory behind the passing of quarterback Alexander. Withjust two minutes remaining in the game, Parks scored on a one-yard run. The point after touchdown was good and the Tigers stayed close at 24-17. The Tigers tried to regain possession of the ball with an on side kick. Glen Cross covered the short kick and the Rams were in good position for another score. A long run by Perry Hubbard set up the final score of the game. Hubbard dashed the last six-yards for the touchdown. Sands' kick was good and the score remained 31-17. ws. To the men who got the job done, thus winning the 1972 WVIAC football champion- ship - may it be the first of a lasting tradition at Shepherd College read the inscription on the banquet program and the spotlight was truly on a deserving group of men and a fine coaching staff. Rice, a West Virginian himself and holder of a great 43-5-2 record while serving as head football coach at Handley High School, con- gratulated the Rams on their winning the title. Championships are something thatjust do not happen buttake a lot of hard work, great attitude and toal effort to accomplish, said Rice. The price is high for anything worth- while, he remarked, adding everybody likes a winner for that is the American way of life. Rice talked about super winners and what he feels are the qualities which it takes to be one. They included motivation, unself- ishness, mental toughness and respect. Head Coach Walter Barr introduced each member of his 43-man squad, they were each presented with the jerseys they wore last Fall, and some also received letters. Barr lauded his squad, called the cham- pionship a total team effort, lauded his grid- ders for their pride and determination and for their good character on and off the field and noted sadly the loss of 19 seniors. He also called himself extremely fortunate to have a coaching staff made up of outstand- ing men, who are completely dedicated to the football program. The team managers, cheerleaders, and other individuals, who helped put together a championship season were also recognized as was Charlie Kave, called the Rams' No. l fan. Fullback Bob Pope, who rushed for 1,128 yards in 276 carries, was presented the award for being named the WVIAC offensive player of the year . The presentation was made by assistant coach Mike Jacobs. Jim Armel, ex-Handley High star who play- ed for Coach Rice, and the leading tackler on the team this year, and senior end Paul Brown, who made the All-WVIAC defensive team, were presented their awards by assistant coaches Sam Biller and Eugene Martin. The Unsung Hero award, presented by assistant coach Al Lueck, went to Russ Ward. Dr. James Butcher lauded the team and coaches for the great championship season 141 and said to them I know it took a total commitment and you have set virtues for others to pattern themselves after. He continued You showed class, just went out there week after week and got the job done and disciplined yourselves and made those great sacrifices for good things don't come easy. Dr. Butcher also praised what he called his A-plus coaching staff. Presentation of the 1972 WVIAC cham- pionship trophy was made by Dr. Butcher to tri-captains Larry Slade, Mike Calhoun and Steve Clarke. Calhoun, senior quarterback, responded on behalf of the team and expressed his deep appreciation for the banquet and the honors paid to the Rams this year by the administra- tion, coaches and the fans. The invocation and benediction was given by senior player Paul Brown. A baked ham dinner was prepared and served by Mrs. Barr, Mary Ellen Biller, Pat Martin, Sara Lueck, Jeannie Jacobs, Mrs. Begole, Mrs. Carper, Mrs. Josephs, Bonnie Gordon, Jean Armel, Eileen Akers, Bev Cummings, Kay Combs, Mrs. Steir, Jody Butler, Sherry Miller, B. Campus nominating committees, in making their selections, are instructed to consider: the student's scholarship, his participation and leadership in academic and extracurricular activities, his citizenship and service to the school and his promise of future usefulness. The organization awards each member a certificate of recognition, given to Shepherd College members on Student Recognition Day. Also, it provides a placement and reference service to assist members seeking employment, scholarships and fellowships. 194 In Recognition Of ' a Twenty-Five Ye rs of Service ax?-M Professor Charles F. I have devoted many hours to the yearbook. Although there were many problems and responsibilities, I enjoyed being editor of the 1973 yearbook. I would like to thank the entire student body, the faculty, administration, and everyone else on campus. I appreciate the work and devotion of my small staff, especially my assistant editors and advisor. Sincerely, Paul R.
