1 , '-. 1 3 ., 1 Y I , ,- 'j f' . - Saw This is Shepherd College. Shepherd is more than just buildings and people. The campus covers a great deal more. To Shepherd students, the bridge, the river, and the monument are all part of their lives at Shepherd. The James Rumsey Monument, a lofty oblique rising high above the river where James Rumsey first navigated his steam boat, has a place in the memory of Shepherd students for many different reasons. This memorial has seen many generations of Shepherd students come and go, and its steps have provided a resting place for sightseers, studious students, and sometimes even couples whose thoughts are far away from the classroom. The park surrounding the monument blossoms every spring with beautiful lilacs, azaleas, and forsythia, but during the fall and winter, the leaves fall and the monument is cold and bleak against the grey Potomac. No matter what the season, the monument is an institution to our student body. Memories are made there, and thus it will serve in the making of memories for future students of Shepherd College. The campus, the monument, the river-these are the things that are Shepherd College. The eternal Potomac, where the regatta is held every spring, where parties are held every week, and where students go just for relaxation. This is as much a part of Shepherd as Knutti Hall or Popodicon. As the river flows by, so do the four years that students are here. Time passes quickly at Shepherd, and too soon it is time to leave. 4
