Soon after the admission of the State to the union, our founding fathers recognized the need for higher education. Shepherd College was established just eight years later in l87l as a private college by the people of Shepherdstown and became a state college on February 27, 1872, to prepare teachers for the many public schools and provide opportunities for higher education for the people of Eastern West Virginia. Shepherd College is proud to salute the State of West Virginia as she celebrates a century of pro- gress. As a state college, Shepherd has appreciated the opportunity to contribute to the building of a greater and better West Virginia.
