IN RECOGNITION O11 IIIS IfIxITIIIfI'L AND EFI-'ICIENT WORK IN TIIE SCHOOLS GF WEST VIROINI.-I. INTRODUCTION XRIENDS oF SHEPHERD COLLEGE: VVe now present the second issue of T111 colzmzgoroolfz, I hoping you will receive it heartily. Remember we do not claim that our annual is a volume of profound wisdom, the reading of which will make you wise beyond all men. XYe do claim to have recorded faithfully the happenings of the school year, the same kind of things that used to happen in schools like Shepherd College, the same kind that will always happen where a consid- erable number of young men and young women mingle daily. Our Editorial Staff has been Argus-eyed and we think few events worth recording have escaped it. That you will find these sayings and jokes characteristic, we have no doubt. However, when a hit is made, let no offense be taken. Nothing has been recorded herein with malice, but with a sincere desire to picture our college life as truthfully as possible. VVe believe that this book will be the source of much pleasure to those acquainted with our school, and that instead of becoming valueless to you, when you have once read it, as is the case of many popular novels, your joy in The Colzoizgoroula will increase as the years go by. VVith a word of grateful thanks to all who have in any way aided us, we otlicr our book for your generous consideration. MILLER THOMAS CQNDIT MILLER URING the past few years, XVest Virginia has made almost marvelous strides in educational roffress 'Nlany ffood schools have been established, and the general efliciency of the school p g it . j g -P 'v:.f. - . . . - . system has been raised. XVe know of no one man to whom our state owes so much lor these improved conditions as our loved Principal, Thomas Condit Miller. He was born in Marion County, tnow Vlfestl Virginia, july io, 1848, and received his early education in a private school of his native county, His education was continued in the Fairmont Normal School and in Adrian College, Michigan. For over forty years he has been actively and successfully engaged in educational work in XVest Virginia. For many years he was Principal of the Fairmont Public Schoolg for eight years, he was Principal of the Preparatory Department and Professor of Pedagogy in the XVest Virginia l'niversity, which position he resigned to become State Superintendent of Schools, in which capacity he served the state with marked success for another eight years. Iluring this time his progressive service and reforms were invaluable, and the effects of his work will be felt in XVest Virginia for years to come. Progress has always been his watchword, and he has always eagerly grasped every new idea that promised advantage to the cause of education. He has been a member of the KVest Virginia Education Association since its organization, and at the present time is one of the Vice-Presidents of the National Education Association. Shepherd College appreciates Mr. Miller and the efforts he has made, and is still making, to bring the institution up to the highest standard of usefulness and eliiciency, and we take great pleasure in offering this humble expression of our love and appreciation. gl. All of our old rivals, one by one, went down and several new opponents tasted the bitterness of defeat at the hands of our valiant quintet. On the twenty-first of january our bitterest foes, the boys from St. blames, the home of the reputed Bai Yuka, swooped down upon our gym determined to wipe us from the face of the earth. But, lo, when the battle was ended and the smoke had cleared away the Marylanders were seen in ignomiuous retreat to the tune of sixty-four to four. The scorekeeper said after the game that he got tired of keeping account of the goals that Buck Gardiner shot and Ferd Snyder and Avey declared that it was the best practice they ever had. In the game against Vtfayneshoro our boys did some real playing. The XYaynesboro team came to us with a good record and were confident of victory when they landed within the gates of New Mecklena berg, but, as all the rest of the hopefuls who had been arrayed against us were treated, so were the Waynesborians. At all times during the games the head of Himes, our trusty center and Captain of the squad, could be seen bobbing up and down from one end of the floor to the other, and it has been stated by the scorekeeper that the number of goals shot by Smith is not on record. In February a much-heralded team from the depths of Penn's woods came against us, but they met the common fate and went back to Pennsylvania in a much greater hurry and with considerably more lowered spirits than they had come. But, alas, for us, they determined to have sweet revenge, and sent a team down which gave us the only defeat of the season. In such a defeat, however, there was no disgrace. Our boys were simply otlt of their class. Nothing more need be said, further than that the score will show that we made a better showing against the Forester's veterans than several teams in our own class made when contesting with us. O5 Our team this year consisted for the greater part of veterans, men who many times before had battled for the honor of old S. C., and who bore many marks of former contests when they went upon the tloor for the initial game ofthe season. VVell did they play their respective parts and it is doubtful if any other school near us of the same standing as Shepherd College ever has had or ever will have the team which can equal the live who have just carried the battle tlag of our Alma Mater to victory and to glory. The morning after his arrival, he entered the gate of the Castle of Knowledge. Raising his eyes toward the roof, he muttered, Suppose it should fall! 'fBe of good cheer, whispered Inner Self, and enter into the Castle of Knowledge. He entered and was met by Gentle Heart. VVhat is your name and what will you have? he asked of Tall Timbers. My name is Tall Timbers and I seek all the learning that I can possibly acquire from the Rulers of the Castle of Knowledge. Are you willing to labor? Learning comes only through unceasing toil. Yes, I am willing with all of my heart, answered Tall Timbers and he was at once received. Gentle Heart referred him to Strict Rule, who wrote on a card all of the Rulers he was to see. Upon going from the room occupied by Strict Rule, he observed, just opposite, the cell ruled over by Good Nature. He entered and, after being asked to join the Basketball Team, was told that there were numerous rules to commit if he acquired learning in Algebra. Good Nature then passed around some candy and Tall Timbers was excused. You will master Algebra for he is an easy mark, whispered Inner Self. Next, he went to the room occupied by Gentle Heart, where he was supposed to get training in School Management. After about ten minutes, this stern, but gentle Ruler appeared. He talked the first five minutes about what the State Legislature was doing and what it ought to do. The next live minutes Tall Timbers learned the names of all the College Professors and Presidents this side of the Mississippi, together with the members of the Boards of Education and County Superintendents of XYest Virginia. The remainder of the time was spent in discussing Birds, Superstitions and the General School Fund and reciting stories found in McGuffy's School Readers. 75 An interesting man, said Inner Self, as they left, but I didn't hear anything about School Manage- ment. Tall Timbers then went upstairs, pushed and jostled all the way by a bevy of boys. He paused on the threshold of the Cavern of Ancient Languages, for having seen the serious little Ruler within, he feared to enter. She soon raised her eyes, however, and smiled. Inner Self murmured, Push on. I shall not assign you work till your Book of Learning has come, said Fair, smiling, and Tall Timbers was at once her ardent admirer. Next, he traveled toward the Dungeon of English and, before he was seated, was told by Unfair, who sat in the Ruler's seat. For tomorrow, write a ten page story. For the next day, a parody on Hamlet's Soliloquy. The next day, an oration on Woman's Suffrage, forty thousand words. The following day, a ghost story. I shall assigne- but Tall Timbers had left, trembling in his boots and had fled into the room of Beloved. You have no work with me, my dear, said Beloved in her motherly way, I am truly sorry, said Tall Timbers, and wept bitter tears. He then went down stairs and was met by Frozen. VVhy are you weeping? asked she kindly. Unfair has scared me and Beloved can give me no learning. My dear Tall Timbers, Unfair has those spells only at times. You must try hard, said Frozen. I shall try. And now, please show me to the room occupied by Slim, where I am to acquire learning in Modern Languages. She directed him down a long corridor to a door by which hung a daily paper. He noticed that every student who came by stopped to read it so he, too, stopped and was so interested that Slim had to Call him twice. When he was seated and Slim had talked a while, Inner Self whispered, Quick! Out of here! He's too easy in class, his exams will be impossible! And Tall Timbers fled, resolving to leave Modern Languages out of his Course and change it to nearly all of learning. Now, it was time for Chapel, where Gentle Heart took up most of the time telling what they studied 76 in Psychology that morning and saying, just one more word about the Library. lYhen he had repeated this for the tenth time, Inner Self whispered, You are nearly exhausted and need food. So Tall Timbers slipped away to his boarding house, making a solemn resolution to give up his task and return to the West Virginia Hills, but Inner Self kept saying, You are big and strong and will soon grow used to the Rulers ofthe Castle of Knowledge. The day had been a hard one and I realized suddenly that I was tired, mentally and physically. The students had been unusually troublesome. Spring was abroad and examinations were coming on, so the quiet at old Shepherd College was somewhat disturbed. As I walked rapidly along, my thoughts fell into a musing train, and I thought, Truly things have changed at Shepherd College-the long hoped for dormitory is now a reality, and I find myself preceptress there, and instructor in English at my Alma Mater, Miss Xlladdell having long since left us to till broader fields of usefulness in a larger institution. But truly, Miss XVaddell, I am trying to do my duty by your English X, XI, XII. I'm out of sorts tonight-tired, lonely and, yes, a trille home-sick, too, Familiar halls at Shepherd College-yet they swarm with new faces, and I long for the class of 1011. I hurry on and open the door of my den which adjoins my room. Here a bright wood-fire crackles away and the moon, just peeping over the hill, looks in at my window. Istart irresolute toward the table where a pile of English X papers wait-and then I decide I'll be a Picket off duty for once-so I draw up a large arm chair to the fire, curl up in it, and in the hrelight faces of the friends that I have known and familiar scenes dear to me because of past associations, come and go. A There in the study hall at 9:15 I see at the librarian's table, Louise Ifolk. Nothing less than og was ever good enough for her on examinations, so she easily fell into the place left vacant by Bliss Hale. Down the corridor I strolled to look in on my old friend Mr. Duke, but presiding in his place I find Abbie Banks, the faithful French student of bygone days. Glaneing into the next class-room to greet our beloved Principal, I find not Professor Miller at all, but E. D. lVIcGarry, instructing the 9:15 class in Sociology in a manner as nearly the counterpart of Professor Miller as long study and earnest imitation could make it. Rushing in at the front door, in splendid imitation of Miss Barnes' hurried manner as she speeds to chapel, I meet Kathryn Beltzhoover. I do not have to ask the tunes for chapel. Soon I hear from 79 the auditorium tl1e strai11s of those familiar songs, just Before the Battle, Mother and Swinging 'Neath tl1e Old Apple Tree. Having seen so many of n1y class-mates in the faculty of dear old Shepherd College, I begin to wonder where the others can be, so to chapel I go and follow the example of lily predecessor and sit back by the door on the boys' side, where I can see everything. There in Mrs. Gardiner's chair I recognize Mary Ilonley, instructor in history. Then Louise Sigler hurries in to fill Miss Smith's place. She is late because she is still hunting those glasses Miss Smith lost in IQI 1. In Miss Turner's place I see Clyde Moler-he who so faithfully drove nine miles every cold morning without a word of complaint. Clyde, you are reaping your reward now and that Szoo cheek each month looks good to you, I know. VVhen chapel is about half over, 0. D. Lambert comes slip- ping in to lill Mr. Fortney's chair. I don't know whether he is doing as Mr. Fortney did or whether it is another evidence of his absent-niindedness, such as we witnessed when he stood at the station talking to Mr. Carr and let tl1e 5:3411 train go OII to Shenandoah Junction without him and then said, I declare, I forgot I was going to Shenandoah junction. XYe all wondered what Iidmund McGarry thought when tl1e train ca111e without Doan. And now the scene is changed. I cross the Potomaeg and there amid the sunny lields of Maryland is a little cottage where Roulette has transplanted Grace, fair llower of the Hedge in Vlfest Virginia, to Maryland's fertile soil. I wander back to VVest Yirginia's limestone country. Ahf tl1ere are the well-known sycamore trees along tl1e dear Potomac, and there I see Libbie Banks still deep in the study of Iiorestryestill hesitat- ing between Smittie's winning ways and Neef's manly beauty. Still further up in Vl'est Virginia our little Muse has changed her name and, as at Shepherd College, she still thinks Golly-day is good enough for her. Come with me and witness a pantomime in front of H. C. Marten's hardware store. Lenora, hesi- tating between two loves. She casts one last lovi11g look at Herbert, then puts her hand in that of a rather stout man and her dear ambition is realizedeat last she is Finley's Own. Herbert wastes but a moment, then he dances merrily on to the Friday evening dancing class and gets another girl. This time a dark-haired junior or a little senior, as the case may be. So Laila Myers a11d her brother, Victor, pass before me, hand in hand, sticking close together as in the days of old. They are teaching their home school at Hedgesville. Texie Strode, triumphantly bearing The Decisive Hour under her arm, has come back to lecture before a joint meeting of the Christian Associations at Shepherd College. Close by, as usual, is our fun- loving Lillian Stump, laughing and serious by turns, waving in the air that one diploma, declaring she still thinks there should have been two. I hear the clank of sword and gun, and there is the Captain of the Cadet Corps, C. lil. Billmyer, home from the wars. He served in Mexico and settled the trouble there, then a few years in the Philippines. In fact, here, there and everywhere, but always Uncle Sa1n's righthand man. The auditorium is brightly lighted up and in a pronzinent place I see C. F. Lyne, and by his side, as in by-gone daysefair Rose, from down on the farm, where they are keeping house. They have driven in tonight to hear Peabody's latest graduate, our own dark-eyed Rachel, give her first public recital in Shepherd College among those of us who loved her best. Y Next morning when the New York Herald reaches Shepherdstown there, under glaring headlines, is an account of the brilliant young pianist, carefully written up by C. N. Harper, who has edited this paper for several years. He got his start at Shepherd College on The Picket, but ere long his genius and talent spoke for themselves and he was called away to New York, where they needed him more. Another item of interest catches my eye. Miss Rose Sellar has accepted a position as instructor in mathematics at a school near New York. Rose is going to teach Geometry! And Edgar Knott has settled down to farning along the quiet, peaceful Potomac. lYe hope he has learned to pull the hay down out of the stack twith a forkb, according to the directions Professor Miller gave him. Fancy paints a picture of Louise Grifhthsever helpful, ever domesticejust preparing supper for that traveling man who never traveled to Shepherdstown once during her senior year. But he seemed to know where to go to capture his Queen Louise when school days were over. And now 'neath the shadow of drooping oak trees on the bank of one of VVest Virginia's streams I see a quaint little school house, where Virginia Vtfhite and Frances VVright are loyally struggling to teach Hthe young idea to shoot aright. 81 Come witl1 me and visit the M. E. Conference. A fluent speaker has the floor. Surely I recognize the voice of my former class-mate who alone could be easily heard above the faint tumult of the P. L. S. cheering their new members. Sitting proudly by is another class-mate, and I see that Margaret's ambi- tion is now a realityeshe has married the Preacher and she and Carlton have forgotten past differences and now easily agree. Minnie still takes solitary walks to the railroad bridge, where she stands day-dreaming, one hand lovingly caressing the frat pin she calls an heir-loom, the other shading her eyes as she gazes fondly off toward Mount Alto. I see a vine covered cottage at Moatsville, VVest Virginia, and up the shady lane two figures strolling arm in arm. Tobe's still seeing Nellie home. It is commencement day at XVest Virginia University and among the graduates I recognize VValter Vance, renowned for chemical research, but rumor whispers- he is fonder still of musicueand its a Harper for him! A dimly-lighted doctor's office next greets my eyes. A tired surgeon rests beside an open fire. From an adjoining room the low, sweet strains of Love's Dream float out, for Baby Doll is soothing Hoddie's tired nerves as in the days of old. VV. FI. Cunningham has risen from private secretary to the Principal of Shepherd College to private secretary to the President of Harvard. Ever loyally at his side is that dark-eyed, dark-haired junior he won at Shepherd College. XYilbert has made a loving husband, for he was easily the biggest spooner in the bunch. A little home at Elkins, VVest Virginia, I see, where our Gardiner has adopted Taylor-ing as his life work. Tired of the many, he has settled down to one at last. I Back from abroad where she has studied faithfully and well comes Edith Gardner-with reputa- tion well known. A place awaits her as music teacher in our State University. I see the town and school excited-fortune has smiled once more on two of IQI 1's members. Bill Himes and Poff have startled the world with a wonderful motor of their own construction. Two more great men among us! Next there is a stormy day, but a faithful solitary figure awaits the arrival of the 8:o4 train, and 82 when it comes sentimental Mae is heard to exclaim, The sun is shining, Grace has come home. Back to Shepherdstown as in the days of yore she comes, but now she is the wife of the elocution teacher of Shepherd College, for Mac has succeeded Mr. McGarry. Far away in our Island possessions a red-haired soldier boy is dreaming of home and a brown-eyed maiden, for William can't quite forget her, and he has always saved that cozy corner in his heart for Rachel. Suddenly, a bell rings furiously. I start up, thinking, 'fIt is chapel time, hut, lol my tire has died down, my room is in darkness. I rub my sleepy eyes and wonder what has happened. The sound of flying foot-steps is heard in the corridor outside my door, and I realize that I'm preceptress in the dor- mitory at Shepherd College, that bell was for ten o'clock p. m. Lights out? After all, it was only a dream, but dear class of IQI 1, I have spent a pleasant evening. May we meet again some day, where dreams come true and life's sun will be ever shining. And now-one last farewell. B. B. IQII S3 135 IUHIORS OF 1921 From far and near come lafl and lass To help ereate this junior Class. They were to come that evening. All day long she had been in the 5 1,3525 kitchen making cakes and plenty of other good things to eat. Now Bobby knew this, and wanted to have his share in the good things too, but when he came around to the kitchen door, Aunt Sallie got the broom and drove him off saying, Law, chile, do you think you goin' to have dese good tings? Dese aint fo' little boys like you. Dey is fo' de Preacher and all de quality folks in cle church. Now Aunt Sallie's cabin was at the far end of the plantation and near the woods, and since Uncle 'lake had died, the colored people did not like to pass that way after dark unless there was a large crowd, for they were afraid of meeting Uncle jake's spirit walking up the path. This evening, however, the party began to assemble very early and there was quite a number of them, for they all knew Aunt Sallie's cooking, and also that she would be very proud to show it off on such an occasion. Bobby had been seated up in one of the trees for some time watching the people come, and he could not help smiling when he thought of what was to happen later. There were the Parson, the Elders, and the Deacons all looking as if they had been fasting all day in anticipation of the supper they were to have this evening after the meeting. A Bobby soon went home, slipped into the house to his room and got one of the bed sheets. He put it in the smallest bundle possible and quietly slipped down the back steps and out of the yard. Making his way up to the back of the cabin, he peeped through the shutters to see what was going on. My! but weren't they having a good time! just ready to sit down to the table? It seemed a shame to spoil it, but he couldn't miss his fun, and, besides, he was hungry too, for he hadn't eaten any supper at home. He wrapped the sheet closely about him and going to the window began to rattle the shutters and moan. It became perfectly quiet on the inside for each one was looking at the other as if to demand an W-v bf explanation. XVhat could it mean. The noise was heard again, and this time a voice called, 'lSallie, Oh, Sallie! IJon't yo' know your ole man's voice? I am his spirit an hah come to git him some ob de good tings dat am on de tableg yo' just bring dat chicken and cake an lay dem down in the doo '. At first Aunt Sallie was too frightened to move, but when she saw the white arm beckoning to her she picked up the cake and chicken and almost dying of fright took them to the door. Now the ghost, not wishing to he recognized, moved off a little way until the door closed and then came for the things. O, what a feast he would have! He took them off a little way and then came back to see what was going on. Every thing was confusion and there in the middle of the floor sat Aunt Sallie wringing her hands and crying. Every once in a while she would cry out and say, I knowed Uncle 'lake would come back when he find dat I hab company, fo' he tinks dat Sallie hah forgot her ole man. Pretty soon things quieted down, and, as there were no more signs of the ghost's appearing again, the meeting broke up, and the people were all very careful to go in a crowd, for they did not wish to meet Uncle jake's spirit while alone. Next day Bobby went down to see Aunt Sallie and she told him how old Uncle 'lake had smelled her chicken and cake cooking and had come hack to get sonxe. KIARGARET G. SIlIltS.XRT, '11 88 'AXQX .
