U16 Wading Uzfwrairfry The Reading Laboratory at Shepard is one of the most important services made avail- able to our children, It is one of the ser- vices made available with ESEA funds that have been allotted to Title I. The need for the service is reflected in pupil per- formance from day to day as they are con- fronted with the tasks relating to the com- municative skills, The Reading Laboratoy is different from the traditional classroom. Seating arrange- ment, furniture, and equipment are different so that the children find new incentives to aspire to their levels of achievement. We are fortunate to have a wealth of material and equipment to help the teacher help the pupils to read more effectively. Equipment and material are adequate for group instruction, but special emphasis has . WIA 'ww-n '.i N. - ' K V- been placed on equipment and material for individual instruction. The pupils' experiences are both dif- ferently new and difficult enough to chal- lenge the enthusiasm and best efforts of the children, Intimate contact is made with each pu- pil since the maximum number per class is ten pupils. 3I

Guidamz' Guidance services have always been a part of Shepard's history. Even when the faculty was small and individual responsibilities extensive, there were those on the staff to offer help whenever the students' personal decisions and crises required attention. 'I'hen, as now, the guidance-minded persons recognized the worth and dignity of each person and sought to always help each pupil become all that he could, Since 1961 a full-time professional counselor has been a part of the staff. The three per- sons who have served in this capacity are Frank L. Tumer, Benjamin F. Merritt, and Mrs, Verna L, Lee, Today 's guidance services are specifically designed to offer professional assistance in every phase of the students' development: personal, social, educational and vocational. To this end the guidance services are involved in the following activities: ,individual and group counseling, testing, assimilating and distributing educational and vocational information, orientation, placement and follow up, i
