Zrauspvrfafivu I 930-I 970 'I ri? Transportation services have been the key to the development of Shepard High School over the four, decades. Until 1930, neither Wake County nor the State of North Carolina had as- sumed responsibility for the transportation of black children. To meet the critical need, one second-hand Model T Ford school bus was provided as a gift of the incumbent principal, Such a method of meeting the challenge to provide transpor- tation for high school pupils from all areas of eastem Wake County to this union school was without parallel in this adminisuative unit, This bus served Wilder's Grove, Knightdale, Shot- well, Riley Hill, Wendell, White Oak, and Pilot communities, traveling approximately eighty miles daily. An example of the zeal and dedication of parents in the 1930's was that Mr, Arthur R. Perry, first bus driver for the high school transportation effort, served without monetary com- pensation forthe full year. Mr, Perry had the distinction of driving a school bus to Shepard for twenty years, longer than any other individual in Wake County, and of driving without acci- dent or traffic citation, Shepard High, today, 1970, is served by twenty-one buses in the Zebulon attendance area: in addition, five transfer buses operating outside the Zebulon attendance area transfer high school children from the Eagle Rock, Wendell, Rolesville areas to attend Shepard High.
