Princzpals I 930- I 970 Principals who have guided the growth and development of Wakefield-Zebulon High, later named Shepard High, through four decades of educational history: CHARLES ALBERT MARRIOTT - Principal, 1929-1932 Educated: Wake County Schools: A, B, Degree - Shaw University, Raleigh, N. C.: M,A, Degree - Columbia University, New York City, inaugurated first four-year high school program for Shepard High, Purchased from personal funds first school bus to transport high school pupils from communities of Knightdale, Shotwell, Wilder's Grove, Riley Hill, Wendell, White Oak, and Pilot. This marked the first step in transportation of black students to any school in Wake County, Parents paid a weekly fee for each child to cover the cost of operation and upkeep of the Ford T Model used school bus, The school custodian served as operator bus driver without pay for the first year of service to these communities. RICHARD ALLEN CARROLL, IR, - Principal, 1932-1939 Educated: Classical High School, Providence, Rhode Island: B, S, Degree - Lincoln, Pennsylvaniag Graduate Study - Hampton Institute, Hampton, Virginia, Organized and directed the first basketball tournament in East Piedmont region, embracing the counties of Durham, Wake, Johnston, Granville, Vance, Franklin, Person, Nash, Warren, Edge- combe, and Pitt. Persuaded County School Board to provide additional classrooms, central heating, and indoor sanitary facilities, Developed Vocational Agriculture and Home Economics programs in the curriculum, Received accreditation by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction in 1933, GARLAND LAFAYETTE CREWS - Principal, 1939-1970 Educated: Granville County elementary and high schools - Creedmoor and Oxford, North Carolina: B,S. Degree - Shaw University, Raleigh, N, C.: Graduate Study - University of Michigan and Columbia University: Graduate professional degree - M. A, New York University, Served thirty-eight years in the field of education - thirty-three of these years as principal in the Wake County Unit.
