We have tried to bring the true heart of Shepard and not false unrealities. We truly hope that you will like the book because this has been a monumental task, fought with arduous and enduring tolls on the part of us, and our advisors. In spite of our many frustrations and heartaches and headaches, the task was finally finished. We wish to acknowledge the help of the different advertisers for their co-operation in bringing about the publishing of this Annual. As we look at the finished product, we have a feeling of pride in what we hope is a job well done. ' ., Wai, Princzjwzlk Message Do not wait for something to turn up, get a spade and dig for it. Do not seek for praise or fame, but strive to derive satisfaction and contentment from doing well the multitude of tasks which the world is eager to have accomplished. In these times of uncertainty and swift change the most dependable resource is your will to achieve and willing hands to tackle the work awaiting for someone to do. There isn't any road map which shows you the road to success. You have to make it yourself. Opportunity does not knock daily at your door, but temptation pounds away every day while calling in dulcet tones to wait awhile before you begin the tasks which await your skills and talents. Enthusiasm is the best shortening for any job. It makes the heaviest work seem lighter. Self confidence, faith, tenacity of purpose can sustain you when all else fails. One of our basic troubles today is that too many of us are looking for someone to do something for us, rather than finding something to do for ourselves. The successful person has learned to take longer steps when he discovers that fate has deceived him. The failures look about for a place to sit down and cry. Never worry about the job you dislike, or tasks you hate to perform. Someone else will replace you to- morrow. Be not afraid of the future, you have seen yesterday and today. in N f Y Q r Chen . . 1939 Shepard High Salma! 1930-7970 Shepard High School will ring down the curtain on June 1, 1970 to a most exciting and challenging four decades of educational growth and pioneering in the history of Wake County schools. For forty years this institution, situated just east of the town limits of Zebulon, North Carolina on Highway 41564 East, has been a symbol and mecca for aspiring black youth of Eastern Wake County to study, to learn, to live and to receive formal instruction in the arts and sciences which characterize the many facets of education. Approximately 3,800 Qthree thousand eight hundredj enrolled in the high school during these four decades. More than 2,000 Qtwo thousandj did not remain to graduate here: however, many transferred to other high schools to complete their secondary education. More than 1,700 fone thousand seven hundredj remained to graduate from Shepard High. These, in large numbers, assumed their status in the adult community as parents, as farmers, and as workers in the skilled and unskilled service occupationsg while hundreds of them continued their training in the professions and higher educational pursuits, Hundreds moved away from the area to play their roles as responsible citizens in widely-scattered localities from Miami to Detroit: from Boston to San Francisco. The original name, Wakefield-Zebulon I-IighSchool, was changed to Shepard High School in 1943. The dual school system will be eliminated following the end of the present school term. All Wake County schools will become a unitary system of education. September, 1970, the high school program and pupils will be merged with the Wakelon High School. Commencement in 1970 will mark the final graduating class from Shepard School. The 1970 class will bring to a close the forty years of secondary instruction in this institutiong thus, it seems fitting and proper that this Yearbook give a panoramic review of the highlights of the past four decades of high school achievement. .QL 1970 .iour dccades of Sducatiomzl Growth and Devclvpmeut Wake Uounty 6l1icf Administrative Ofhcers John C. Transportation services have been the key to the development of Shepard High School over the four, decades. Until 1930, neither Wake County nor the State of North Carolina had as- sumed responsibility for the transportation of black children. To meet the critical need, one second-hand Model T Ford school bus was provided as a gift of the incumbent principal, Such a method of meeting the challenge to provide transpor- tation for high school pupils from all areas of eastem Wake County to this union school was without parallel in this adminisuative unit, This bus served Wilder's Grove, Knightdale, Shot- well, Riley Hill, Wendell, White Oak, and Pilot communities, traveling approximately eighty miles daily. An example of the zeal and dedication of parents in the 1930's was that Mr, Arthur R. Perry, first bus driver for the high school transportation effort, served without monetary com- pensation forthe full year. Mr, Perry had the distinction of driving a school bus to Shepard for twenty years, longer than any other individual in Wake County, and of driving without acci- dent or traffic citation, Shepard High, today, 1970, is served by twenty-one buses in the Zebulon attendance area: in addition, five transfer buses operating outside the Zebulon attendance area transfer high school children from the Eagle Rock, Wendell, Rolesville areas to attend Shepard High. CHUUL BUS 'fill-'- Guidamz' Guidance services have always been a part of Shepard's history. Even when the faculty was small and individual responsibilities extensive, there were those on the staff to offer help whenever the students' personal decisions and crises required attention. 'I'hen, as now, the guidance-minded persons recognized the worth and dignity of each person and sought to always help each pupil become all that he could, Since 1961 a full-time professional counselor has been a part of the staff. The three per- sons who have served in this capacity are Frank L. Tumer, Benjamin F. Merritt, and Mrs, Verna L, Lee, Today 's guidance services are specifically designed to offer professional assistance in every phase of the students' development: personal, social, educational and vocational. To this end the guidance services are involved in the following activities: ,individual and group counseling, testing, assimilating and distributing educational and vocational information, orientation, placement and follow up, i U16 Wading Uzfwrairfry The Reading Laboratory at Shepard is one of the most important services made avail- able to our children, It is one of the ser- vices made available with ESEA funds that have been allotted to Title I. The need for the service is reflected in pupil per- formance from day to day as they are con- fronted with the tasks relating to the com- municative skills, The Reading Laboratoy is different from the traditional classroom. Seating arrange- ment, furniture, and equipment are different so that the children find new incentives to aspire to their levels of achievement. We are fortunate to have a wealth of material and equipment to help the teacher help the pupils to read more effectively. Equipment and material are adequate for group instruction, but special emphasis has . WIA 'ww-n '.i N. - ' K V- been placed on equipment and material for individual instruction. The pupils' experiences are both dif- ferently new and difficult enough to chal- lenge the enthusiasm and best efforts of the children, Intimate contact is made with each pu- pil since the maximum number per class is ten pupils. 3I Develvpmenf of Music at Shepard The first band was organized under the direction of Mr, James Skelton in 1952, The second band was started in '59 with 78 members under the direction of Mr. O, L, Taylor 41959-615, In 1963 the third band was started, The directors were Mr. J. BAKER Reading Instructor for high school and elementary students Addifivnal Staff Members MRS. BETTY HUNT HIGH Elementary Librarian H 1 i 4 4 a I 5 2 4 611155 History As we, the Class of 1970, gradually approach our goal, we begin to look back into the past and to remember our first year at Shepard High, We remember the ex- citement, splendor, and happiness that accompanied those past years, As Freshmen, we anticipated a new way of school life. We made ourselves ac- customed to new ideas and customs. With determination we pushed forward with the help of our advisors, Mrs, McCoy, Mrs, Williamson, and Mr, Teel. The presidents who represented the three sections of our class were Nellie High, Donald Morgan, and Linda Robertson. When we retumed as Sophomores, we thought that we were as wise as the owls, But, oh how wrong we were! We soon leamed that there was much more to be ac- complished before we could reach our destiny. Many of us participated in the various activities. One of our class members, Delores O'Neal, won the title of Miss Senior High. Some had the honor and pleasure of serving as waiters and waitresses for the Junior-Senior Prom. They were Teresa Horton, Patricia Perry, Deborah Ferrell, Brenda Lucas, Christine Richardson, Samuel Jones, Vernon Bullock, Dwight Walton, Ronald Morgan, and Larry Whitley. Our advisors were Mrs, McCoy, Mrs. Williamson, and Mr, Yates. Our class presidents were Nellie High and Donald Morgan. We then looked forward to our junior year. This year brought along with it all the splendor and excitement that we had ex- pected, Most of us had the experience of entering the Crown and Scepter Club, How- ever, the most memorable experience of all was the Junior-Senior Prom which had as its theme, A Shower of Stars. Our class advisors were Mrs, McCoy, Mrs. Williamson, and Mr. Yates. The class officers were: President - Donald Morgan Vice-President - Deborah Ferrell Secretary - Wanda Vick Assistant Sec. - Vivian Bullock Finally we have reached our long awaited goal. Seniors at last! We are striving to make our last year a very successful one, Our projects include plans for our future life which lies ahead of us. Nevertheless, our biggest project was the publication of our yearbook, It was our aim and greanest desire to produce a very interesting and memorable one. The following students were responsible for the Senior Class receiving much honor and distinction: Gwendolyn Carpenter - Miss Shepard High Donald Jones - Mr. Shepard High Dorothy Gillis - Miss Homecoming Our class advisors are Miss I . M. Harris and Mr, Handy Yates, Jr. The class officers are: Larry Mayo, President, Patricia Perry, Vice-President: Secretary, Wanda Vicky Assistant Secretary, Judy Porter: Parliamentarians, Walter Rogers and David Norwoodg and Reporters, Shirley Mitchell and Dorothy Gillis. We feel that Shepard has really done its duty in preparing us for the future. We only hope that we do not fail this noble institution. As we leave the halls of Shepard High and advance towards the rim of the future, memories will still echo through our hearts and minds forever.
