Advertifements 232 This year we have chosen two special people to whom we would like to dedicate our yearbook. Both exemplify our idea of Miss Simmons Miss Margaret A. Simmons was the first English teacher hired by Shenendehowa. Since that time, seventeen years ago, she has helped countless students in many capacities. She has served as the high school's reading teacher, as a specialist for those students recom' mended to her by teachers and parents for special assistance in reading and learning, and as consultant to teachers. In addition to this, Miss Simmons has proven herself invaluable in helping Seniors to prepare and organize their graduation cere- monies each year. Her role in our own school's A.F.S. program is very important, and she is presently serving as chairman of the Am- ericans Abroad Committee for the American Field Service Interna- tional Scholarships Incorporated. In her own quiet way, Miss Simmons has been serving Shenen- dehowa since its origin. She has been working on an individual basis with students, helping them to overcome difficulties. All too often a person such as this goes unrecognized by a world too hurried to see more than just the brightest stars in the sky. We have stopped to take a closer look, and that is why we have chosen Miss Margaret A. Simmons as one of our special, beautiful people. Leautiful people, helping individuals in quiet, behind the scene ways. fo them goes our appreciation, and our respect. Mr. DelNegro Mr. Victor DelNegro serves in his official capacities as Shenendehowa's drama teacher, speech therapist, and advisor of the Drama Club. However, members of our student body know him as much more than that. This man has shown himself to be a true friend-always finding time to talk to students and lend a helping hand. He is there to give sound advice, yet at the same time is able to help students assume responsibilities on their own. More im- portantly, he makes them realize that these responsibilities go hand in hand with priv- ileges, a fact of which many need to be reminded. Of all the types of beautiful people, Mr. DelNegro is a do-er, always doing some- thing for the school. He is well known for his drama productions, helping with dances, building the junior-Senior Snack Bar, and fighting for our Senior privileges. Characteristics that make Mr. DelNegro the person that he is are his great sense of humor, his willingness to try new ideas, and his active imagination. His most out- standing quality, however, is his willingness to give of himself completely, and that is truly the best gift of all. ,Q ,wgkr Spic and Spun woultln't leave all that dirt. J. Sealed: Larry Rufrano, presidentg Kathy Guyer, secretary. Standing: Kathy vicc presidentg Diane Connors, treasurer Mr, Paul Perrault is the Senior Class Dean. As such, he is in charge of all class activities, and has certainly worked hard for our class in this capacity. In the beginning of the year he fought to get us a senior lunchroom and snack bar. On top of this, he is a person willing to listen to any problems seniors might have, and is a person seniors are willing to talk to. We, as ri class, have much for which to thank him. Exchange Dear Friends, Now, my feeling is happiness because I am living together with these sincere and friendly people for one year, I'm sure that I'm having the most beautiful experience of my life and that's why I have to say: Thanks to the people of Shenendehowa and the Rotary Club of Shenendehowa that made possible for me this wonderful experience. I hope to be a good representative of my country, Brazil, Rotary, my school, and I hope I'll please you. It's pleasant to keep contact with other people, other customs, other Ways of life. I'm learning very much about you and the United States. When I go back to my country, I'll leave a little of my heart with you. I'm glad to have the opportunity to express my thanks for my great friends, my teachers, and the people of this country for this marvelous welcome. I am sincerely grateful. A Rotary Exchange Student, Fellow Plainsmen, Experiences like mine, living with people of Brazil, studying their language, their government, and more important, learning how they think and why are so helpful if we are ever to live in peace and understanding with the rest of the world. I don't want to forget the friends I have made here in Brazil. These are warm people who are as anxious as we to trade ideas. I find myself feeling very proud when I tell them about you and our school and country. When I met young Brazilians going to the United States as next year's Exchange Students, I assured them that my people will make them as welcome and as happy as I feel here. Make friends with them. They're nice and lots of fun. I would like to thank Shenendehowa Rotary for making this year of better understanding possible. See you all next August, Bob Waller I Amy Skarin Samia The experience of being an ex- change student was exciting and challenging. As an American Field Service Exchange Student to Fin- land I had a great opportunity to learn. One of the most important things I learned was that those characteristics of Finland that make Finland a distinct country with its own culture can be seen best by knowing its people. This is the major goal of A.F.S.-to al- low students around the world to Walk together, talk togetheru and to learn about each other, other ways of thinking, other cultures, and themselves. I lived in the southeast part of Finland with my Finnish family. They made me feel welcome and one of the family. I followed their life, their way of living, from wash- ing dishes, to dances, to saunas. This summer truly was an experi- ence to share with all. I wish to thank all who made last summer possible-the commu- nity for their support of this pro- gram, the A.F.S. committee for their time and effort, Miss Sim- mons for her help and understand- ing, and especially my Finnish fam- ily for being what they are. Stzzdenzii The language is a very limited field, and the words are incapable to express my real Rafika Blili Love, Sophistication, Beauty, Unity, Acquain- tance and a great educational faculty. That is what the school is based on. And that is how I feel about the great SHENENDEHOWA. It is a great kingdom of Teenagers, with all the things they need. It has well qualified teach- ers and administration. The all great thing in my opinion about the school is not the great number of students, but the way it handles them. As for the students they are very hospitable and lovable people. Their high attitude to- ward sports is bringing them success in foot- ball, etc. The plainsmen are really striking. Their high efforts to make you happy and at home is really remarkable. I really enjoyed the school and the students. Sometimes I wish I had taken all my school years there. They are great kids both in educational and sports streams. I wish they keep it up. As for the family I live with, they are just great, patient and responsible. My mother, Mrs. Chodos, has really been a real fantastic moth- er. I'll never forget her. My father has always been a great father and has helped me in a lot of things. I had also great times with my athletic brothers and beautiful sisters. feelings. However someone must live the ex- perience to understand it, because one has to feel and to pass through the same circum- stances his brother has passed to understand his feelings. Can you taste Love before you feel it and live it? It is the same thing for me. You can't understand my real emotions toward this year and I can't describe them as real as they are. Sometimes I feel very happy to be here in the United States and among friendly people who want to help me. And sometimes I feel very sad because the word thank you is only a sound which doesn't mean many things. But I am obliged to use it because I can't do anything else, I don't have another deep word other than it. So I say Thank you very much to all of my nice American Family, to all the people responsible for the A.F.S., to all my teachers and students in Shenendehowa High School. And I hope that you'll remember the girl who believes in the Solidarity and who comes in 1971-1972 from Tunisia to have her own experience, because she thinks that all men are brothers and must live together because nothing is stronger than Love, Peace and Solid- arity. Athletics is an important aspect of school life at S.C.S. A good balance of team and individual sports are pro- vided for girls as well as boys, fresh- men as well as seniors, with both in- tramural and interscholastic sports be- ing offered. Being part of a team can he one of the most rewarding experiences in a person's high school career. The dis- cipline of a sport develops the mind, body, and most importantly, the character of the athlete involved. A sportsman learns to work with oth- ers, put out his best effort, and accept victory and defeat with dignity. Our athletic program is valuable not only to the students participating ac- tively on the teams, but also to the rest of the student body. Competition with other schools fosters school spirit, and this spirit is what makes Shenen- dehowa a real high school. 3 TE Q Q -SN 'Q Q 138 ix avi Pl R . li W t L, q if ff fl. . ,A ' .
