:ff fr , ,m,. . OZEWOZ raduation gives birth to many emotions. Yesterday we lived and moved and had our beings in a child's world, today we stand on the threshold of a more mundane reality, and tomorrow we put away, forever, the things of our childhood and enter an adult society. The competitive world of economic achievement will claim some of us, and the contemplative world of scholastic pursuit will engage others. In any event, our existence as school boys and girls is short-lived indeed. In presenting our yearbook to you we take advantage of our prerogative to demand your attention. We present this book in a moment of reflection, we make an analogy. We have spent twelve years, twelve-long ones when viewed from present to future, twelve frighteningly Heet ones when viewed from present to past. Our analogy is this. As the sculptor takes a measure of unshaped, unformed molding clay and labors patiently, skillfully, and long step by step, to produce a useful, polished work of art, so, too, did our school teachers accept us as unshaped, unformed children twelve years ago, labor patiently, skillfully and long to produce useful, polished people. The working and polishing is finished now, and it is for us to demonstrate that our sculptors, working in human elements, were as successful as the sculptor working in lifeless clay. It is ours now to show the world that the effort and the strife that went into the past twelve years was not in vain. 0VLll6lfLi.4 I-Administration II-Elementary III-Underclassmen IV-Athletics V-Clubs VI-Seniors 0 , ,!,., M -f ,Quia K if , ffv,:wy3EL9l74ffiZw ,:,.LYf4x,15. This year proved to be somewhat dif- ferent because there was a large and enthusias- tic turn out for the girls, soccer team. A schedule of games with Niskayuna, Ballston Spa, Burnt Hills and Saratoga was arranged. We defeated Saratoga and lost to the other three schools. The team hoped to have other games on the November playday, but the schedule was can- celled because of poor weather. Because of the progress that had been made by the time the season ended, and because of the enthusiasm and skill shown, it would appear that next years, team will be a good one. 64 Interest in the intramural program for Girls Physical Education has greatly increased during the past few years. Additional Playdays, widely divergent schedules of contests with many dif- ferent schools and new and fresher approaches to the usual routine of daily physical educa- tion classes are all the accomplishments of our director, Miss Lorraine Hubbard. Miss Hubbard taught at several schools be- fore coming to us in 1955 when we were eighth graders. Qgwga While writing these few lines for the Yearbook, I want to take the opportunity to thank each one of you who contributed to make a dream of so many European teen-agers come true to me. All through the year you tried to make me feel at home in your school and community by your sincere kindness and open friendliness. I think you succeeded in it because it is with a regret that I see the remaining days, weeks and months Hying by as if they were jets. It will be a joy to me, when back in my country, I look through my mind and scrapbook and re- fresh all the wonderful moments I had in the United States. When I go home, I have to do my senior year of high school over, but I find this year has been most profitable. I gained an experience I never would have received from a year of booklearning. My stay has brought me in contact with many differing people and their customs. I have learned to appreciate them equally. I came also to the conclusion that in America not everybody is as the actors of Hollywood, that not everybody is a mil- lionaire, who spends his time driving around town in a white 1960 convertible, but that there are people like us with the same problems and who want peace. I tried to understand your people, and this understanding I will try to pass on to the teen- agers and older people of Belgium because in the understanding of each other rests peace. I hope I did justice to my country and that you learned as much from me as I did from you. Maybe in the future some of you will be visiting Europe, remember then that somewhere over the ocean in Belgium you have a friend where you always will be welcome. Francine Wybo Dear Reader, uWalk together, talk together, O ye peoples of the earthg then and only then, shall ye have peace. These words taken from the ancient Sanskrit serve as the motto for and explanation of the existence of the American Field Service. From these countries, in turn came al- most 1600 teen-agers to live here for a school year and see some of our country in the summer before returning to their home-lands. Last summer I saw and did many wonderful things. I lived as one of four boys in a Norwegian family. I learned to respect the differences be- tween Karl Dahl's family and my fatheras family. The Dahlis are now as a second family to me. I hope to visit them and the people of Oye who are my friends, sometime in the future. To everyone who helps make the American Field Service a reality through his work and dona- tions, I give my sincerest thanks. I had a wonder- ful experience that will always be part of me. . It represented the voice of the student body, and through democratic procedure made decisions that affected the entire school. Among these decisions were the drafting of a school calendar and the standardization of the school ring. Also important in the work of the Council was the work with the American Field Service. It organized the community body which sponsored the visit of one of our student body to a foreign country for the summer. The Future Far- mers of America added substance to the material being developed in our overall scholastic growth. Interested in up-to-date farming methods, sound man- agement - practices and good leadership, the club accom- plished much for the school and its mem- bers. Their practical projects of selling eggs, operating milk-bar, and spon- soring dances offered them opportunities for real business ex- perience. They held a dignified banquet to which parents of members attended. Q .N . The purpose of this club is to interest students in personal and community health, to encourage them in finding out what nursing requires and what it offers, to help them decide wisely about professional or practi- cal nursing as their career. Meetings were held the first and third lVednesday of the month. The money-raising projects were directed toward providing a scholarship to a graduate who is planning a career in nursing. The members help the School Nurse-Teacher in the Health Room and at the immunization clinics. There were weekly meetings and guest-lecturers. Mr. Dziezic, the advisor, permitted much open discussion 5 and a casual, unhurried atmosphere made meetings both pleasant and profitable. Our Bible Club did much to rub off the rough edges of our personal sculpture. It was intended to promote spiritual growth and to erase personal imperfections. Meetings were weekly and oFfered speakers, films, and Bible study. This was the biggest event of, our junior year, and we looked forward to it for many months. On May 2, 1959, we lived and loved our prom at the Van Curler Hotel in Schenectady. We will always have wonderful memories of that marvelous night. As the evening passed, the tension mountedg the names were called and one by one Sandra Carlo, Dianne John- son, Dian Blossom, Linda Peck, Mary DeMartino, Nancy Peck, Beth Jackson, and Rose Marie Alexander received their beautiful roses, finally the Queen was named-Lea! She took her place on the throne, was crowned by Jeanne Wagner and our Prom was over, our memories will live forever. The purpose of any yearbook is to record the events of the school year. We, the editors of this book, choose to feel that the book, although it is designed, written and published by the members of the senior class, is a record of the activities of all students in all grades and classes. We have tried to hit the high spots in social, athletic and scholas- tic affairs. We think that we have perpetuated for you those occurrences that you most enjoyed. We hope that our book will help you to re-live the many happy moments that you experienced during the 1959-60 year at Shenendehowa. The staff, would at this time, like to thank all those persons who have helped to compile this book. A special thanks goes to our yearbook advisors, Mr. Emery Fullaytor and Mr. Henry Dziezic, for their time, patience, and encouragement, for without their help this book would not have been possible.
