Thompson, L. Riberdy, G. I-lajeck. The Chieftain began during the first year as a clubg members were drawn from the eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth grades. The paper entered the Siena News Asso- ciation and took first place in the division of mimeographed news- papers. It also took second place in E.S.S.P.A. and won second prize for typography and editorial content. In the second year the club was changed to a senior English section, it was helped by a news club, the Newspaper Writing and Reporting Club. Those who joined wrote articles for the newspaper. One of the foremost articles, Record Shop, was written by Dick Allen. The present editor of the newspaper is Al Mager. Newer features in- clude photographs and interviews with members of the Senior class. The club also took field trips to various newspapers plants to see large scale newspapers in production. K, Compliments of STUDENT COUNCIL MESSINA-SMART Pottery-Chino-Gifts 'sh R I K ,fx F 'X-S5 The Shenendehowa Student Council is an elected organization which represents the student body's interest in school affairs. Two regular representatives and one alternate are chosen by each class. Members of the Council nominate officers, with the exception of the president, from among their numberg the nominations are voted on by the student body. The student body both nominates and electsthe President. Of- ficers for 1955-56 are President-Gary Hajeck, Vice-President-Dick Allen, Secretary-Judy Skoyolas, Treasurer-Susan Hopper. Accomplishments of the Student Council include the setting up of raising money for and carrying out the American Field Service Stu- dent Exchange program, the handling of tickets and admissions for home and away basketball games and the establishment of a visitors greeting system. Student council is in charge of playing music in the cafeteria during the lunch periodg regulating class and club social af- fairsg regulating products sold by school organizationsg sponsoring the distribution of honor pinsg sponsoring student assembliesg and donat- ing money for the band, chorus and twirlers' uniforms. The Student Council has also acted as a mediator between the stu- dent and the administration in questions which concern both parties. It has tried to find solutions to Shenendehowa's problems, and in the great part, has succeeded. 60 'MT ...Bt
