The earliest of the marine organisms were very simple, more elaborate forms developed from this common ancestry. more complex descendents were better equipped to take part in the struggle for survival. The sea is the greatest battlefield of the world. The prime which determine the victor in these great wars are the respective pro- tective measures of each warrior. Many sea animals herd together in schools, for there is safety in numbers. Humans, too, are gre- garious creatures. Wc live in large communities and our school education helps us to live together in a spirit of democracy and tolerance. Tropical fish conceal by means of their brilliant coloring, sharp spikes with which to surpnse their at- tacker. We, too, have armor with wluch to defend ourselves. However, learning, our sword in battle, is a mental rather than a physical quality, an aggressive rather than a defensive weapon. All of these protective measures aid us in the struggle for survival , but even with such attributes, we still have a challenge. Most of the world has been explored. Man has reached the poles and scaled Everest. But, as the sea has not yet been conquered, so have we still to conquer life. Treasurer DA VID MEA GER CLASS OFHCERS f as l sf C CLASS HISTORY As the streams flow into the rivers and the rivers flow into the seas, we as elementary students left the various one-roomed schoolhouses to enter our freshman year in one of the four neighboring high schools. A year later Shenendehowa was completed and we all came together for the first time. We started things off with a bang by electing our class officers: Roy Schell, Presidentg Sharon Sanders, Secretaryg and Stanley Dworak, Treasurer. Our junior year we rode the crest of the wave with Sharon Sanders serving as Presidentg Bill Winters, Vice-President. Nancy Parker, Secretaryg and David Meager, Treasurer. We had several money -making activities including three dances to finance our yearbook. We made a big splash with our Prom, the event of the year. The Oriental Paradise, with Steve Anthony's band, was a tremendous success. September 7, 1955 found us back at school as SENIORSI The big fish of the school. At our first class meeting we elected Bill Winters, Presidentg Joe Antenueci, Vice-Presidentg Shelda Werner Secretary: and David Meager, Treasurer. Spots swam before the eyes of the underclassmen the day we all dressed in pink and black, our class colors. Senior Slop Day was a complete reversal. Any visitor to the school would have thought he was in a pretty kettle of fish. Much of our senior year was spent in raising money for our yearbook through such projects as our Harvest Swing, the Christmas dance, and our novelty dance. The rest of our time was spent in actually working on this yearbook, a memorial to the Class of '5b. The affair of the year was our Senior Banquet, with Class night coming in for its share of the prestige. Suddenly, our big day had stolen upon us. On June 25th, we were no longer students, but were tossed adrift in the sea, hopeful that we would ride the waves of success forever. s..' 1:3 ' . ,fi ! 1 JOSEPH A NTEN UCCI Men are more likeable for ihe bad qualities they doh't possess than for the good ones they do. ,5gd4,,,,e, A Wim Hs: 1 ' JOSEPH BARANOWSK1 M A man for all hours. J 00GENISIS Due to the success of the The Congo last year, the art classes decided to continue the Art Production with Oogenisis . The theme was Man and the music was taken from the Planets by Holst. Poems were chosen that best suited the theme and the music. It was decided to adopt the Greek Custom of having a chorus to recite poems: the chorus was ably directed by Miss George. Each of the seven scenes of the production show a different aspect of man. With the two-fold purpose of learning the principles of good theater and of learn- ing how to get along with people, the Drama Club decided to make the production of Thornton Wilder's play Our Town its major project for the year. This play won the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1938, and it is unusual in that the usual appurte- nances ofa contemporary play are omitted: there is virtually no scenery or props. In their place is substituted the Shakespearean ' emphasis of development of character by acting, words and pantomime. The club ac- ce ted the challenge of a play which depend a P - an ed on acting almost completely, and found .4 much satisfaction in exploring the themes of life, love, marriage and death as revealed in OUR TOWN. 63 X Cast of OUR TOWN , the 1956 Dramatics Club Production P. The forest green and white of the uni- forms blend a festive air to basketball games, parades, and concerts. In the spring of 55 the band under the direction of Mr. MacElroy played for several parades and won a trophy at one as the best musical organiza- tion present. The first concert was presented this year at the annual Community Festival. ln February two joint con- certs were given in conjunction with the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Band, one at Shenendehowa, the other at Burnt Hills. These concerts, made up of a 90 piece band were the fore- runners of many combined concerts to come. The annual spring concert, presented with the members of the Chorus, was the crowning glory in a string of many successes. J. Hight, D. Dewey, P. Dewey. J. O'Briel1. E. Barrett, R. TWIRLERS SENIOR TWIRLERS The Twirling Club was organized Q f during the 1953-54 school year. There are two main divisions of twirling. One is the club, which meets on Wednesdays and is open to anyone. The other is the Senior Twirlers com- posed of seven members selected from the club. Their leader is Janet Barndt who is assisted by Irene Martin. The other members are: Judy Skocylas, Barbara Yates, Julia I..aBarge, Joan Kessler and Doris Gorsline, and the two substitutes are: Jackie Burgi and Karen Masters. Junior Twirlers is a club organized to teach students how to twirl. There are no specific requirements except that each member must own a baton. PH xe'oi2'a ' J I' When you just begin to twirl, it takes a lot of hard practicing, outside of school, as well as inside. After each member completes his fundamental twirls, they then learn a simple rou- tine using all of the twirls they have learned. Each time they learn one more twirl, it is added to the routine. From this group the senior twirl- ers are chosen. IN FRONT: J. Barndt. IN BACK: J. LaBarge, D. Male, I. Martin, B. Yates, J. Burgi, D Gorsline, N. Millington, J. Kessler. How- ever, it did have its high points. Led by two high-scoring Seniors, Frank DeVoe and Dave Meager, the Plainsmen gave every team they met a good fight. Although no games were won, the Plainsmen improved considerably as the season progressed and finished with an inspired struggle against Milne, lagging only five points behind. VARSITY CHEERLEADERS Hurray! We finally made it--VARSITY --what else? Last May tryouts were held to select the cheerleaders for this year. Practices were held in the elementary gym. With muscles very stiff and spirits high, we trooped into the high school gym for our final practice. Seven girls were chosen by members of the faculty acting as judges. When the practice was over, spirits were very low. We had a whole night of suspense to look forward to. The following morning the following seven girls found their names posted: Janet Brewster, Carol Louprette, Dody Furlow, Shelda Werner, Carol Hayner, .Tanet Carey, and Sally Bessette. Needless to say, the most exciting game was our home game with Waterford High. The score was tiedg we had to play a three- minute overtime period. Waterford took the lead, and to our disappointment kept it through the last couple of minutes. Well, that's it for another yearg and none of us can say that we didn't enjoy it! 6 7 DeVoe, D. Burwash, G. Sweet, G. Peck, 'N IN FRONT: s. Hopper. IN BACK: P. X Laverdiere, I. Petuske. J. Bassler, L. McCune, J. Reynolds, M. Felthousen. Each spring all the girls that are interested in cheer- leading are eligible to tryout for a squad. The present seven Junior Varsity cheer leaders were very happy the day they saw their names posted after the final try- outs. Early in the fall we start- ed our two practices a week. At practice we discuss, orig- inate, and practice the cheers that we use. It takes team- work during practice to work out and perfect every new cheer. The Jr. Varsity cheered with the Varsity Cheerlead- ers during Soccer season. In the Basketball season we cheered for the .Tr. Varsity games. JR. VARSITY BASKETBALL KNEELING: R. Desnoyers, T.
