The purpose is to involve more of the student body in the preparation of the yearbook and to provide experience for the Juniors who must edit the yearbook next year. The Junior staff gains experience in preparing the layout, writing copy, and sharing responsibility. Pro- viding the Seniors with a Junior staff to aid them will hopefully provide Shenango with its best yearbook ever. Pictured at the left are the Juniors. First Row: Cheryl Young, Debby Nunn. The Health Careers Club is an organization for the students interested in some field of medicine. It was formerly called Future Nurses of America until the name was changed in 1971 to open the club to students who were interested in some field of medi- cine other than nursing. During the club meetings different speakers were invited. A special event was when Dr. Harold L. Lei- tel was the guest speaker for the induction held Jan- uary 15. The club also had an Easter program for handi- capped children and sponsored a Valentines Day Dance in the gym. Their money making project was selling candy. Under the direction of Mr. Daniel Ryder, our band represented us admirably as the Honors Band at Edinboro State College. They also received an excellent rating in competition at Indiana State College. A very special event this year took our Band, Color Guard, Drill Team and Flag Corps to Pensacola, Flor- ida for the Fiesta of Five Flags competition. The money for the trip was raised by having bake sales, selling items contained in a money box, sponsoring a variety show, a spaghetti dinner, a parent dance, an auction sale, a card party, and a style show. The officers of the band were chosen with Dave Kish, President; Brian Sisley, Vice-President; and Sec- retary-Treasurer, Cheryl Prestopine. Mrs. Cheryl Boling advised the Drill Team along with Gail Wadlinger, Captain; Bea Fleo, Co-captain; Karen Benzick, Secretary; and Debbie Quarello, Trea- surer. Stationery and litterbaskets were sold along with other money raising projects. The Color Guard and Flag Corps were headed by Sherry Duda and Carol Dachko, respectively with Mr. Daniel Ryder Advisor to both groups. Wildcat Marching Band SENIOR BAND MEMBERS Kneeling: S. Lewis. B. The platform of the Tomahawk Talks is “for a better Shenango. With this in mind, the literary staff trys to meet its responsibility to the students in presenting news objectively and using the edito- rial priviledge to criticize weak- ness in our system fairly. They try to publish a paper that represents Shenango well in the eyes of the community. The Business staff sells subscriptions and ads to fi- nance the publication of the paper. Some of the outstanding accomplish- ments this season consisted of a season record of 21 first places achieved by Kim Amalong and a total individual effort of 127 points achieved by Debbie Espo- sito. The team proved to be a major threat in the Tri-County circle with a record of 11 wins and 5 losses. The student body also developed an interest in baseball and fully supported a tal- ented team. The 1972 senior baseball players were Larry Bell, John Bilger, Rich Bintrim, Tom'Burford, Elmer Gil- son, Terry LaScola, Creighton Miller, Dennis Wal- zak and Donald Watters. Talent, teamwork, concentration, and hours of practice-coupled with student encouragement- provided a winning season for the baseball team. Cross Country Avoiding cars, dogs, and other various obstacles is only part of the activities of the Cross Country team. These seventeen boys spent their evenings running seven to ten miles. The courses at the meets, usually two and one half miles long, vary from golf courses to woods and forests. The Cross Country team accumulated a winning record of eight wins and four losses. Coached by Mr. Floyd Montgomery, the team made outstanding progress. Shenango's Cross Country team has not been the best in the past few years; however, the 1972 team made up for this by winning their last seven meets and producing a winning season. There is no existing tri-county league for Cross Country but the Wildcats challenge local teams. This prepares the boys for the WPIAL Qualifier held each fall. Tom Marttala, David Genareo, and Bill Shaw placed in the qualifying meet. Determination and discipline combined with long hours of running, were the elements that produced a winning 1972 Cross Country team. Football Shenango High School has consistently produced one of the finest football teams in the county. The 1972-73 football team was no exception. There were ten outstanding lettermen returning to the team, with added depth supplied by strong sophomores and juniors. The football team had a strong offense as it was consistent in moving the ball. The defense played an important role, giving up an average of only 7 points per game. Shenango was well represented in the WPIAL football team. Gary Mangino and Gene Troggio made 1st team offense and were chosen for the ALL- WP1AL team. Gene Troggio was also picked as the Most Valuable Player in the Tri-County section. Dan Carney made 1st team defense. Shenango players chosen for the 2d team were; Roger Shoaff, Jan Budai, Don Dettore and Jim Lepisto. The football team compiled a season record of 7 wins and 2 losses. They also encountered diffi- culties as many key players were side-lined with in- juries. John Lacko, Don Dettore, Ron Droszdal and Dave Yough suffered injuries throughout the season. The defeats and injuries, however, did not dampen their hopes for another trophy. With determination and practice, Shenango's football team had once again done something of which the student body was very proud. Golf The Shenango High School golf team completed a 5-3 record this year. Victories included two over Se- neca Valley, two over Slippery Rock, and one vic- tory over Mohawk. The Wildcats also lost a match to Mohawk and two matches to Union. The golfers practice at Sylvan Heights Golf Course. This is the smallest team of golfers She- nango has ever had. The team consisted of Seniors Gary Kerr, Larry Gabriel, and Doug Richards: Junior Marty McConahy: Sophomores Albert DiMuccio and Wes Barton: and Freshman Bob Wagner. Each golfer plays 18 holes against an opposing player. Scoring in WPIAL Section II is based upon one point for the winner of the first nine holes and one point for the winner of the second nine. An- other point is given to the player who won the most holes. The maximum number of points a player can receive is three. A1 DiMuccio won the fifth place trophy in the An- nual Tri-County Golf Tournament after a four-hole playoff against three other players. Basketball Passing by the gymnasium, one could hear sounds of basketballs smacking hardwood floors. The She- nango basketball team continued to practice for an- other successful season. Coached by Mr. Thomas Hartwell, the team pos- sessed five valuable seniors: Jan Budai, Felix Car- della, Ralph Conti, Bob Elliott, and George Salamon. The basketball team put forth an admirable effort and were major contenders for the Section Title. 87 We tried going our separate ways, but togetherness is more fun. Under the direction of Mr. Robert Gibbs, our Shenango sing- ers and dancers provided a delightful visit to the color- ful land of Brigadoon in Scotland. The students in the cast and crew recreated that wonderland which comes to life every 100 years. Bri- gadoon, 1972, brought together Tommy Albright and Fiona McLaren portrayed respectively by Doug Nagel and Sharon Ulp. Music and color highlighted the performances. It was a fine evening to watch Diane Tervo receive the crown from last year's queen, joella Zingaro. October 7,1972 was enjoyable not only because of the favorable weather, but the evening brought with it a victory and a new name for our football field. Although the evening of October 7 was cold, there was a great deal of warmth surrounding the activi- ties that night. Until this night the Shenango High School football field was not officially dedicated or named. At 7:00 p.m. all attention was focused on the man chosen to be honored. With great affection and appreciation of his service to our school and com- munity, the field became officially the Glen W. Pop Johnston Field. “Pop”, as he is affectionately known, was the first principal of Shenango High School. He was princi- pal from 1926-1932, supervising principal from 1932- 1958, and teacher from 1958-1964. Mr. Johnston re- tired in 1964 after 38 years of service. “Pop was very active in education throughout those years, and he is now an active member of the First Baptist Church of New Castle, the Retired Bowlers, and the local Shenango Area Lions Club. As a member of the Lions Club, he served a term as dent. Mr. Johnston is also a member and past-presi- dent of the Lawrence County Branch of the Pennsyl- vania Retired Teachers Association. “Pop is a familiar figure to all of us at Shenango. He has many times come to substitute and share his experiences with us. When he is not here working as an integral part of Shenango, Pop” enjoys fish- ing, traveling, bowling, and sleeping. We are proud of Pop Johnston and we hope that by naming the football field in his honor, we have in some way shown him how much he is respected and appreciated. 98 “Pop is a Prince” The 1972 Christmas Dance was held on December 16, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. in the high school cafe- teria. Entertainment was provided by “The Esche- lon.” The sophomore ushers and usherettes were: Don Colba, Gary Letera, Mark Smiley, Bill Tanner, Suzie Gibson, Jodi Murphey, Judy Troggio, and Mary Wehr. The evening was highlighted by an ap- pearance from Santa, who favored everyone with candy canes. In spite of the snow and ice which fell during the dance, the evening was enjoyed by all who attended.
