We elected Merle Zeigler as our President, Gladys Feil as Vice President, Josephine Denny as Secretary, and Howard Moran as Treasurer. With Mr. Beatty as our Adviser we made an admirable record even though we bore the name, those green Freshiesf' We had matured somewhat when the next fall rolled around, and 75 Sophomores returned to Shenango's halls of learning to be again under Mr. Beatty's careful supervi- sion. Zeigler, McGuire, Feil, and Charles Tanner happened to be our best politicians and captured the offices for that memorable year. Time Marched On and we entered our present year, and the remainder of our history is summed up in three verses of poetry Written by Gladys Feil and Ann Paton: Mrs. M arino is our adviser Glddys takes down all the notes To work with her is a pleasure, And keeps reports close by, Michaels ish't any miser While President Z eigler coimits the votes, With the funds, he carefully treasures. Only casting his in case of o tie. Ernie zmder the President Is merely called V. P. Thus we of '46 are bent To be the best in history. R65 N g six' FRONT ROW-Left to Right: Brown, Reitz, D. The Sophomore Class The present Sophomore Class had an exciting and progressive Freshman year. There were 88 of us at the time of the printing of the '44 Annual. We surpassed all classes in the sale of the Yearbook to secure the coveted prize of doughnuts and ice cream. We said, Goodbye to that grand old year with a picnic at Cascade Park. Our Sophomore year is told in rhyme by our poet, Charles McGary. This year ends a year of many memories Mr. McC0llough alrzszvered the call Both in our nation and at schoolg To guide and direct as through the year: We have learned the effects of a long hard Great progress we have made to date, 10003 We are making the grade, you see, in high And of more difficult subjects with no gear. time to fool. The cast under the direction of Miss Betty Davis gave an unusually outstand- ing performance. The entire action of the play took place in the lobby of the Craig House, a family type hotel run by Mrs. Craig, a widow who was energetic and friendly. Professor Kent who was staying at the hotel expected his nephew, Allen Kent, a mischievous lad who did not always tell the truth, to bring home a real South Sea Island Queen. Allen was in love with his high school sweetheart, Mildred Wade. Bruce Clyde, a peppy, likeable, fast-talking newspaper editor for the paper owned by Mrs. Julia Boyd, hears that Allen did not bring the cannibal queen. In order to save the day for himself, he gets his fiancee, Brenda, to dress up and act the part of the queen. Brenda was trying to convince Eugena Sherwood, a drama director, that she was capable of taking the leading part in a play, and Bruce persuades Brenda that in as- suming this part she will get her desire. Mary Fremont, the professor's niece, and her husband, Robert, believe the whole thing is a farce and act accordingly all through the play. Daisy Mae and Lucious Long, two colored people, act as Brenda's handmaiden and bodyguard. Just before they came into the hotel, the unexpected happened, and the real Ju Ju who followed Allen Kent to the United States came into the hotel. Things surely hap- pen fast. Finally everything turned out right when Ju Ju who already had seven hus- bands decided to take Lucious back with her to be the king, CAST OF CHARACTERS Mrs, Craig Cerner are Karna Drake Professor Kent are er., Dale McKissick Allen Kent ea,,es DW, , Dan Ehrheart Mildred Wade or D ,D an Lois Mcllrath Bruce Clyde D., or David Henderson Brenda Day r C, We sc. Shenango Crier The Shenango Crier, our monthly news voice, has had a successful year under the capable supervision of Miss Edna Grimm and her efficient staff. This group has worked diligently to satisfy their many patrons-our schoolmates. Every issue reached this eager group of readers except those issues which failed to be published due to the heavy fall of snow several times during the term. The vacations more than repaid for the loss of the paper, and the staff and student body always carried on with more vigor and vim as the result of these vacations. Editor - . . ,. Ass't Editor . . . Meetings are held on the third Friday of every month. Members of this club are responsible for the program at these meetings. Interest is promoted by the discussion of the battles and events of the Romans in the Latin days, as well as singing songs both in Latin and English, a language that has received over fifty per cent of its words from the Latin. The Circulus Latinus voted to have Veni, vidi, non vici as their motto. Some Latin has been conquered but a still greater field lies ahead to that student who may continue studying in this subject. As our Latin days draw to a close we remember with pleasure those times we forgot the translations for lively discussions, arguments, talks and above all the songs. Much credit is due this hard-working group. Their peppy leading of the cheers has helped our football stars to cross the line or has given that fast basket- ball player the extra energy to make the winning basket. There is nothing that will encourage a team more than the rousing cheering of the student body. They feel that they must do their best and not disappoint a group that is eagerly cheering them on to victory. The County Three-way Tie Our 1944 team as assembled was made up of 27 inexperienced players and two vet- erans, Charles Tanner and Anthony Morrone. We started our practices two weeks be- fore the school term opened. We were a very high-spirited bunch of boys, ready, willing, and able to do what our coach, Mr. Nahas, told us. Our first few games were unsuccessful as far as wins go, but we were always in there fighting to the last second, giving the other team everything we had. Then came the County League games with Union and Bessemer. These were the ones that counted. In the Union game, we were ahead until the last couple of minutes when Union ran back a punt for 65 yards for a touchdown. That didn't stop us! The following week was one of hard grueling practices, but it paid off. Our reward, and the crowning success of the season was the defeat of Bessemer, 13-0, to give us a three-way tie in the County League. The ones who have played their last games for their Alma Mater are Captain An- thony Morrone, Duane Dougherty, Dan Ehrheart, George Metz, and Charles Fordyce. Coach L.. The Basketball Season Early in November, Mr. Nahas, our high school basketball coach, called all candidates to practice. A large group of boys greeted him including four lettermen: Charles Tanner, Jack Badger, Merle Zeig- lcr, and Marlen Shaffer. After two weeks of hard practice the pre-season games were started. We had considerable success in these games, winning five and losing two, both losses by one-point margins. The regular Section 21 competition began on January 5 with Shcnango defeating Eastbrook very easily on our court. The following Tuesday we suffered a loss to Bessemer but we had a brilliant comeback by defeating the highly touted New Wilmington team. The next sectional game found us tangling with Wampum and losing but holding Wampum to a low sco1'e. Our next game found us en- tertaining Mt. Jackson with another victory for the Wildcats. The final game of the first half found us playing our old rival Union High. This was a thrilling game, with the score see-sawing back and forth with Shenango finally winning by one point. The first half of the Section 21 competition found Shcnango winding up with a record of four wins and two losses. Shenango opened the second half by playing and defeating a return engagement with Eastbrook, We then traveled to New VVilmington suffering a defeat, setting us back in the race. On the following Friday we entertained Wampum and were again the losers in a hard, well-fought game. The third game of the second half was played at Mt. Jackson where we recovered from our losing streak and piled up a high sco1'e. Union then ventured to try their luck again against their Shenango rival but we easily triumphed on the old home floor. The Princeton game was another victo1'y for the Nahas coached team. We completed the season with a brilliant triumph over Bessemer placing Shenango in third place in the Section 21 competition with eight sectional wins against four losses. After the season was over Shenango participated in a Tri-County Tournament in which teams from Butler and Lawrence Counties took part. Shenango ente1'ed the semi-finals by defeating Zelienople, champions of Section 25, by a score of 49-29. The next evening our team played Wampum, keeping ahead of them the entire game, only to lose in the closing minutes with a margin of 3 points, 50-47. This was the best game of the year with both teams hot. ANTHONY MORRONE MARLEN SHAFFER CHARLES TANNER FORWARD FORWARD FORWARD Here goes !IH,0fII6I' freak Wind will I do! Ah! Lest We Forget SENIORS ATTENTION! REMEMBER WHEN: 1. Margie put worms in Elmer's lunch. 2. Mr. Nahas got Irene's and Laura's notes. 3. George Metz wrote a lovely letter to Lois Mcllrath. 4. Mary Beckert and Laura got caught discussing diaries in chorus. 7 5. Dale McKissick was seen leaving Della Mayberry s house at 5 a. m. 6. George Metz fell off the sled at our Sleighing Party. 7. Gracie got stuck in an elevator with a man. 8. Margie fell off the horse and Mr. Beatty saw her. 9. The teachers called their dignified Seniors names. 10. Karna Drake and Della Mayberry did jitterbug. 11. The blood trickled from Norma Fleeger's nose when she had her chemistry experi- ment. 12. Mr. Kyle threw Katie Sager around on the sleigh ride. 13. The Seniors had to loosen their belts at the chili supper. 14. Margaret McGary, Margie Fuhs, and Lois Mcllrath had to thumb their way home from play practice. It was all right, Elmer was there. 15. The weather affected the Seniors' plans. 16. The Victory Club skipped P. O. D. 17. Our football team fooled us and beat Bessemer. 18. Mr. Kyle did sweat over his assembly programs. 19. Ethel Dudash blushed when the teachers called upon her. 20 21 . The Novelty Committee starved to get their Annual finished. . Mrs. Marino treated us. , ,,,,,.., Her Fun 1, Red Hair 22. The Senior boys dedicated the song After the Ball Is Over to Mrs. Marino. 23. Phyllis Smith and Marlen Shaffer waded snow drifts after ads. 24. Many of the Annual Staff gave up their vacation during the coal shortage to get this Yearbook to the printer. 25. Mr. Canan preached to the P. O. D. class and its effect upon the Seniors. The World of Tomorrow I stopped at Ma Gilson's newsstand to pick up The Shenango Crier. To my de- light I find that Norma Fleeger will become the first woman president of the United States. Too bad the Republican candidate, Marlen Shaffer, had to lose, but he still has his multi-millions and his chorus girls. Well, well appearing at the McGary Swank Nite Club are Dale McKissick, the great band leader and Catherine Sager, his swoon singer. I'd like to know how Della likes being an orchestra leader's wife. What's this here? Phyllis Smith is on trial for bigamy. I wonder if they ever caught up with Mary Beckert? Our great crime-buster, Eleanor Styers, raided the Smiley Bur- lesque Theatre where Elmer Hilton had been appearing in The Cannibal Queen. The local courtroom is a busy place. Even Marjory Fuhs is being held for poisoning her patient, Irene Walters. She pleads not guilty since she only got a chemistry formula mixed up. Her star attorney, George Tervo, is sure to win the case. My! My! Jean Kelly is still filabustering in Congress on whether congressmen should wear their hats to and from the capitol building. Jean understands so well the important issues facing our nation. On the society page I see where Mary Ruth Alford and Karna Drake are full-pledged navy nurses. They will now be able to see more of the world and the gobs. Ethel Du- dash has gone to New York to become one of the famous Metz models, and Charles For- dyce is having great success managing His Lonely Heart Club. Since Mr. J ohnston's promotion to Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, Stella Zak has been elected as supervising principal at Shenango. Mr. Canan is a mem- ber of the State Legislature and at present is railroading a bill through the House that will permit schools to close down for any emergency without making up the time. Lois Mcllrath has become Howard Moore's private secretary. The world is now considering Duane Dougherty as the second Henry Ford. Florence Makarevich is the Well paid bus driver of the Boro bus. Donna Jean Marso, the manhater, is now head of the Almira Home. She is ably assisted by Iona Turner, lone heiress of the wealthy Cowmeadow estate. The sports and entertainment section come next. I can hardly believe my eyii as I read that Joyce Forsberg is the undefeated lady tennis player of America, and, still more impossible, that Johnny Williams is the lightweight champion. Grace McCandless is a great success as Baby Snooksf' The Ringling Brothers Circus is coming to town starring Anna Michaels as the bravest lion tamer in the world. It is said that Miriam Hemming is the most romantic star in Hollywood. She is now appearing in 'Tm No Wolfess, Wolf-Wolf. Heading the Want Ad Section is Lois McQuiston's notice that her beauty shop of- fers a face lifting special to any member of the Class of '45. Let's all apply. Here in big letters is Get your fresh farm products from Stella Horneyf' Tony Morrone is no longer advertising his wrecking business since Margaret White alone gives him plenty to do along that line. Mary Pritchard would like to trade a Coupe for a Station Wagon to accommo- date her family. The Bulisco Five and Ten is having another sale. Madame Staph will demonstrate How to bleach your hair the quick and easy way. What is this small article? Is Ellen Goodwill taking in sewing until her sailor comes home? Florence Shaner is advertising for four more high chairs since the quads arrived. I wonder if Lois Pettitt ever succeeded in getting a ten-party line since her radio is out of order. I see where Irene Zmuda has another notice in the paper asking her husband to come home and she'll never throw another dish at him again. Dan Ehrheart is advertising that he has finally succeeded in reducing to be a second Sinatra. Irene Adamczyk Jones Smith Vanderbilt just came over so I must put the paper down and listen to her story of how her third husband committed suicide if I want to inherit any of her millions. -LAURA BANNON. -4- S, X-A sv Z ,d J Q, 11 Q s-25' sf?
