When white men first came to thi s valley centuries ago, they found a beautiful songbird in the dark, velvety-green of the forests, At twilight they wandered among the trees and listened as the bird's song rang clearly in the deep stillness of the night. The songit sang was Zynodoa. -Indians thrilled to the song Zynodoa. One evening as a young squaw was lullingher child to rest, the rapturous music of the bird rang clearly as though it were a me s sage from the starlit heavens . The mother was thrilled by the beauty of it all and named her little son Zynodoa. This young brave became a great warri or and his fame spread tribe to tribe. The sixteen of us who are left have practiced, performed, and procrastinated on this journey - now the account as, related from our log. We were typical freshmen. Afte r initiation and midnight sererades we soon learned what was expect- ed of us, that is conduct-wise. As for school work, we all had fun one way or another. Itseems the faculty made their mistake when they gave us the advanced Seashore test because they found ----- . The results of othe r te sts they managed to keep more secret. After exams and achievements they really had us under their thumbs. The first semester passed rather quietly with our get-aquainted hours and hard cider partieslby Fitz and Pinky. It wa s Fitzie's bug dance that kept us laughing. The following semester Jean came from the blowy north to join our class while Bob decided that a cold conservatory held more interest than bleak V. P.I. Eldon reversed that policy and went from the con- servatory to the college. It was at a winter band con- cert that Bo sat on the organ to play his baby tuba. That Spring while Diane barbacued parakeets, others held slumber parties and raided the barracks. During the year we lo st two of our class - Lowell Dyar and Billie .Toe Stokes. It was Kitty Wainer who was hearing wedding bells as we departed for home, Our freshman year hadbeen such a breeze that the sophomore year was mortification, Blaine had re- turned with a wife to occupy his time while the rest of us suffered with voice class and other subjects day round. Itwasn'twithout its bright spots though because we had a new sophomore bythe name of Ed Brownfrom Cincinnatti Conservatoryg and gave a kickoff to the now traditional Halloween party. It was, second semester that Bob Rock transferred from us to the college. This is the year that on a s nowy morning we stood outside Rocky Hall waiting for our Theory Exam, only to find that Mr. Marks had overslept. Thank goodne s s it wasn't until after a- c hi e v e m e nt s that Fay dislocated her jaw playing basketball. It was our loss when faraway places claim- ed .Tim Geiger and Fitzie. We were pleased, however, that the talent of Blaine and Pinky were recognized by Delta, Psi Omega at the end of our sophmore year. The following year upon our return we were welcomed by President Ra c e y who introduced us to the Reverend Kyre, our new college minister Immediately we miss- ed Gus .Tohnson who had transferred to Catholic Uni- versity, but w e prospered in gaining Shirley Lantz. Max Beaver, too, was missing. In October we found use of our many talents when they started scheduling practice rooms...0ff , what a fight! Dean ,Clarke '!'in- spired us to unknown heights on Monday, Wednesday, Friday because there was a confab after every class. How in Music History we indulged our efforts with the help ofpopcorn and one or two o'clocks sessions - Mr. McCluer, we still know those records!! That was the 'class before which Speedy always took a nap ...... This was the year ofpractical experience, too, for on choir tour several of our class learned the advantage of eating before drinking. Nor was itwithout its practical jokes b e cau s e at time s we just couldn't persuade Barbara Bennett to leave her room for phone calls or fire drills. The Christmas seasonheld its 'excitements - es- p e c ia lly for Elaine. Elaine, the girl who had never beenkis sed before college, returned to school engaged. Early in the New Year Lou Baker took a leave of absence to join the Air Force. Non-seasonal was the pungent odor of Kin-1's garlic - and her gift for help with school work. Ne ll , and Pinky too, were engage by this time. It was Nell's fi an c e who insisted upo having her awaken early in the morning - much to he sleepy disgust. You couldn't say that all of our efforts were o schoolworkor socializing because the M.S.W. obtain ed their chaipte r of Sigma Alpha Iota with Milli Hampton as president. Another campus fraternity Delta Psi, initiated Elaine, Fay, Shirley, and Jean int its cast. Thus ended the third year with all the hope and joys that at last we would be Seniors. Students usually are problems Qso we've learned but on our return the teachers we re confronted wit the same faces but rnostly new names. Roll call wa strange: there were two Millers, Elaine and Pinkyg New Huffmang Millie fat the end of the alphabet, Woods Diane Post Bowerg and Shirley Lantz Phares who no only changed her name but gave two weeks free spellin lessons. Somehow Ray Conner managed to keep his th same! Missing though were Dolly and Frances wit their jokes and antics, And what about Ethelda Wilso who married a College professor! ! The majority of us managed to go on a trip t Washington to tryout the National C athe dr al an gathe r a few facts in the Library of Congress. Th Concert Choir was so on fire with enthusiasm that i one instance the concert hall burned before their ap pearance. While mentioning trips Ed and Jean seeme to return from one officially engaged. Mid semester came and went with nurses em ployed in the flu epidemic be sides doing their regula work. And Ray and Spe e dy enjoyed a preview of th neighbors Christmas toys. The climax of the seaso came when B a r b a r a Jordan renounced her ideas oldmaidhood and now awakes to music every mornin Since school must go on some classes just had t meet in the dark while the rest of us fought for th rights which had been forfeited to a Senior table. Yes, the years have molded us into a class wi all the characteristic traits of a group with a comm purpose. School has had its joy and sorrows, rewar and disappointments in the unfolding of our lives. W e ll , that's n ot true-time flies. It s e e m s like only yesterday that we were hitting the dirt after some friendly upper- classman called out, Air Raid, you rats ! Even though our knees w e r e, bruised and our nerves were on edge, we were happy because at last we were Fre shmen at Shenandoah. . Our Freshman year proved to be quite an interesting one. For many of us it was our first time away' from home and our mother's guiding hand, b ut by the end of the year, most beds had been made and we had learned to stand on our own two feet. I don't think any of us will ever forget Miss Keiter greeting a tardy member of her English class with, Mr, Martindale, you'l1 p r obably be half an hour late for your own wedding, We'll always r e rn e mb e r Peachie's blood-curdling scream as she peered into he 1' microscope in Mr. Liskey's Biology class and shrieked, What's that thing? Years from now we shall recall the sound of Jack Webb declaring that he will beat Mary to death, and the sound of Kenny Frank's Chevrolet making its way toward Madison because he doesn't have enough gas to make it to West Virginia. Every time we smell popcorn we shall remember the popcorn parties and Nealy declaring she must not eat one more bite. Oldsmobiles will make us think of the times we had to jump out of Bob R.itchie's way, and eve ry time we hear laughter, we'll be reminded of Lois. How in the world will w e ever forget tho s e half English, half Spanish conver- sations between Saul and Tina with Anne Miller listening in to s e e how many new Spanish wo'rds she could pick up? Every time we're near a window and see a Pontiac convertible fly by, our re- flexes will make us run from force of habit b e c au s e if.we hadn't moved in the past, Bailey would ha ve knocked us flat trying to .see if the car were a familiar one. We will s till be able to hear Bill Bruce, Adam, and Nash insisting that they have to go to town and Dave fElvisJ Nanki- vell dying every time he hears a certain song because it reminds him of Her. We 'll seeBillie Ann pondering over V an application to Albright College and Betty Lou helping Mary Ann clear off tables in the dining hall. As for Jerry, Mur riue l , and Johnny Ware, well, if you e ve r happened to be a second late stepping upon the curb as they flew by, you were doing well if you made it all in one piece. ,A , ' The Hornets would never have made it wi thout the athl e ti c ability of Ronnie Funkhouser, Dick Bly, Gene, Clatterbuck, Stan Thomas, and Gerald Lanham. Sociology class would never have been complete without the c o mlm e n t s of Bill Ramey and John Clem, and the Snack Bar improv ed quite a bit when Charles Robinson took charge. Rev. Kyre had quite a time trying to explain to his second year Bible class that Job was not quite as patient as some people have tried to prove, and he finally convinced Gene Kni c e ly , Dave Kiser, and Kenneth Shumake. If we hear the song, I Wonder If I Care As Much , we'll cover our ears be- cause we'll still hear Judy and Becky singing very much off key. Y e s , all of us have many memories, some good and some bad, that we shall be able to share with our future families. We are graduating and soon there will be anew Sophomore College Class, but our hearts will always remember the class of 1958 and we will have a more hopeful future b e c a u s e of the experience we shared at Shenandoah.
